APPLICATION
An employer is required to demonstrate compliance to AS/NZS 1715 or any of the legislated Codes of Practice in terms of risk management. Respiratory hazards must be addressed using the highest ranking of the 3 prescribed risk control initiatives (National WHS Act Codes of Practice), placing PPE as the lowest ranking choice.

AS/NZS1715:2009 states that particulate lters are changed when breathing resistance is experienced.

AS/NZS1715:2009 states that charcoal cartridges are changed when breakthrough / smell / taste is detected.

AS/NZS 1716:2012 Table 5.2 must be studied to understand specic gas and vapour lter capacities. For Type A, B, E, G, K, AX, NO & MB. The chart above describes performance of Type A lters from that table.

SAFETY TIPS
1. Facial hair will compromise the face seal of any respirator. 2. RPE may affect the t of eye protection at the nose bridge. 3. Charcoal lters combined with P2/P3 particulate lters in all applications. 4. Store RPE away from work areas for hygiene and extended lter life reasons.
All workers should be trained in the correct use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.

RISK ASSESSMENT
The AS/NZS 1715:2009 describes respiratory risk assessment along with a Respiratory Protection Program and the appointment of a Program Administrator where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is required to be worn. Some of the risk assessment requirements are: Evaluate tasks to determine if RPE will compromise vision, communications, other PPE. Can wearers of RPE do so without psychological limitations (RPE can be claustrophic). The employer must provide training in the cleaning, safe use and limitations of RPE at the commencement of employment and at routine employment intervals. The Program Administrator must ensure a compliant t test has been carried out for all users of RPE and maintain suitable records. The AS/NZS 1715:2009 describes both Qualitative and Quantitative t test methods. A Bitrex Fit Test Kit (Qualitative t test system) is available and listed in this section.
