PART B Answer any one question from each Module. Each question carries 20 marks. Module I 11. Derive the most general heat conduction equation in cylindrical coordinates. 12. a) Show that the temperature profile for heat conduction through a wall of constant thermal conductivity is a straight line and in presence of a heat source it becomes parabolic. b) An exterior wall of a house may be approximated by a 4 inch layer of common brick (k = 0.7 W/mC) followed by a 1.5 inch layer of gypscms plaster (k = 0.48 W/mC). What thickness of loosely packed rock wool insulation (k = 0.065 W/mC) should be added to reduce the heat loss (or gain) through the wall by 80 percent ? 20 Module II 13. State and explain Buckingham theorem. What are its merits and demerits ? With the help of Buckingham -theorem, derive the most general correlation for free convection. 20 14. a) A long rod of 12 mm square cross section made of low carbon steel protrudes into air at 35C from a furnace wall at 200C. The convective heat transfer coefficient is estimated at 22W/m2K. The conductivity of material is 51.9 W/mK. Determine the location from the wall at which the temperature will be 60C. Also calculate the temperature at 80 mm from base. b) A tube having outside diameter 2 cm is maintained at a uniform temperature T1 and is covered with an insulation (k = 0.2 W/mk) to reduce the heat loss. Heat is dissipated from the outer surface of insulation by natural convection with ha = 15 W/m2K into the ambient air at T . Determine the critical thickness of insulation. Calculate the ratio of the heat loss from the tube with insulation to that without insulation for the thickness of insulation equal to the critical thickness. 20 20

16. a) Show that emissive power of a black body is times the intensity of emitted radiation. b) Two parallel gray planes have emissivities of 0.8 and 0.7 and are maintained at 800C and 1500C. What is the net radiant energy exchange ? What would be the reduction in heat transfer if a radiation shield of polished aluminium ( = 0.04 ) is placed between them ? 20
