was his inspiration for Main Street,

that brought him worldwide fame. Te

ofce for Dr. Lewis medical practice,

Sinclair Lewis...
Critics praised him, claiming that
his writing represented the culture of
the 1920s and 1930s. Mark Schorer,
in his exhaustive biography, notes
regarding Lewiss work, American
culture seems always to have had a
literary spokesman, a single writer
who presented American culture
and American attitudes toward its
culture, to the world. Lewis was
that author. The titles of two of his
novels, Main Street and Babbitt,
were introduced into the American
vocabulary. These words developed
their own cultural meanings.
Dr. Sally E. Parry of the
Sinclair Lewis Society
Why is Lewis Important?
For literature, the academy only con-
siders works that have appeared in print
and have been proven by the test of
experience and examination of experts.
An author is chosen for the award not
for one book but for a body of works.
Te fve works that Sinclair Lewis was
awarded the Nobel Prize for include:
Elmer Gantry, Babbitt, Dodsworth,
Arrowsmith and Main Street.
In 1930, Sinclair Lewis became the
frst American to be awarded the Nobel
Prize for Literature.

Dave Bromenshenkel isnt happy
with losing a large section of his
woods for the CapX2020 project
Local landowner Dave Bromenshenkel looks out over a 150-foot swath of land that used to be lled with hundred-plus-year-
old trees, but had to be cleared to make room for transmission lines as part of the CapX2020 project running from Fargo to
Monticello.

Dave Bromenshenkel
bought a section of wooded
land about three miles east
of Sauk Centre along County
Road 186 in 1980.
He has enjoyed the
woods ever since, taking na-
ture walks, building a cross-
country ski trail and hunting
wildlife.
But last week chainsaws
buzzed and heavy machinery
tore apart a 150-foot swath of
the woods he shares with an-
other landowner as part of the
CapX2020 project. In place
of the 100-plus-year-old red
oak, white oak and ash trees
will be large 340kv transmis-
sion lines.
I just dont understand
why they couldnt stay along
the highway, said Bromen-
shenkel, a retired farmer.
Theyre pushing it out into
private land and Im upset the
woods have to go.
Bromenshenkel has about
80 acres of woods and guesses
he will lose upwards of 1,000
large and mature trees due to
the project,
A lot of landowners
are opposed to this, he said.
They are taking private land
for public use and it just isnt
fair when there is a different
way to do it. A lot of these
trees are 150 to 175 years old.
Thats when the Indians were
here yet.
In addition to his 80 acres
is another 120 acres of hard-
wood forest, something that is
rare in this part of the state.
You just dont see large
sections of woods like this
around these parts anymore.
A long process
Plans for the Fargo to
Monticello CapX2020 project
began in 2007. The project is
now in phase two of construc-
tion. The rst phase of lines
from Monticello to St. Cloud
is completed. The second
phase runs from St. Cloud
to Alexandria and the third
phase from Alexandria to the
Red River Valley near Fargo.

Theres an old saying that
its not the size of the dog in the
ght, its the size of the ght in
the dog.
That is certainly true in
Gabe Marthalers case. Born at
23 weeks and six days to par-
ents Adam and Pam Marthaler,
Gabe measured one pound,
four ounces and was only 11
inches long. His chances of
survival were slim as only one
in ve babies born before 24
weeks survive.
But Gabe Marthaler is a
ghter, and so far he is winning
the battle. Little Gabe came
home on Dec. 29 after 116 days
in the hospital to the welcom-
ing arms of his loving parents.
We were so happy, said
Adam, a 1999 graduate of Sauk
Centre High School. That day
couldnt come fast enough for
us.
While that day is one of
the best of his life, it capped
the scariest moment of his life.
Pam, who is originally from
Sartell (the couple now lives in
Albany where Adam is a teach-
er), was having a normal preg-
nancy when her stomach began
to hurt. She scheduled a check
up and doctors noticed her
blood pressure was alarmingly
high and immediately trans-
ferred her to St. Cloud Hospital
for monitoring and medication
to try and bring the blood pres-
sure down. The condition is
known as Preeclampsia. Doc-
tors told the couple that if the
medication didnt work they
would have to induce labor.
Time was running out as Pam
was getting sicker and the Se-
vere Preeclampsia soon turned
into HELLP Syndrome, which
is when the body poisons itself.
That meant the baby would
have to be delivered by emer-
gency C-Section. Otherwise,
both mom and baby would die.
Everything was happening so
fast, said Adam. This was the
last thing I was thinking when
we went to the clinic that after-
noon.
Just ve hours after that
routine visit, nurses informed
Adam that his baby boy was
born and that mom was improv-
ing. He got to see Gabe about a
half hour later.
The local chapter of the
Blue Star Mothers has bro-
ken away from the national
Blue Star Mothers group.
Of cials for the local
chapter said it has nothing to
do with anything the nation-
al organization did, but that
they would like to branch
off on their own so they can
spend less time with paper-
work and more time sup-
porting the troops.
We are nding we are
spending so much of our
time doing the bureaucrat-
ic things, said Blue Star
Mother Sherry Olson. With
all of us being volunteers
there isnt a lot of time left
over to do the good things
we want to do.
Olson said the Blue Star
Mothers will likely change
their name and seek non-
pro t status. While they go
through the transition she
said people can still donate
to the local Blue Star Moth-
ers Chapter.
We just want to have
more time to do the stuff
we want to do, Olson said.
We just decided we could
do better on our own.
Olson said the Blue Star
Mothers is a wonderful orga-
nization and that by branch-
ing off on their own, the lo-
cal chapter does not want to
send the wrong message and
not have people support the
Blue Star Mothers organiza-
tion.
It is a great organiza-
tion, she said. We were
just spending more time on
their watch than on ours.

A lengthy presentation
and discussion on the second-
ary school registration pro-
cess was held at last Tuesday
nights Sauk Centre School
Board meeting. A large crowd
of over 25 was on hand at the
senior high media center.
Secondary principal Be-
linda Selfors gave the board a
21-page printout of a Power-
point slideshow she explained
throughout the rst 90 minutes
of the meeting. It explained in
depth the scheduling process
as well as rates of how often
students got into the elective
classes they wanted.
The registration discus-
sion was prompted by a hand-
ful of parents wondering why
their children had problems
getting the elective classes
they wanted.
All year long we analyze
scheduling issues, Selfors
explained as she reviewed
the timeline for class registra-
tion. Weve had bumps and
challenges with the switch to
a ve-period day that weve
been working through.
Selfors pointed out that
many issues will be dealt
with at the upcoming Jan. 21
In Service day, when teach-
ers will review and update the
course registration packet for
the 2013-14 year. That packet
will be distributed to students
and their parents in February.
We encourage parent
involvement when students
begin choosing their course
selections with primary and
alternate requests, Selfors
said.

Approximately
250
people gathered at the Sauk
Centre Country Club last Sat-
urday to honor the life of Pat
DuBois, who passed away
Jan. 7 at the age of 97.
Pat DuBois was most
well known for his career at
First State Bank and his inter-
est in politics, which led him
to serve three terms in the
House of Representatives. He
was also a volunteer re ght-
er for 30 years.
But DuBois was also a
simple man who loved simple
things, and was a champion
for the little guy. His philan-
thropy not only stretched the
plains and prairies of Central
Minnesota, but affected the
far reaches of the world. He
stepped forward, many times
privately and without fanfare,
to offer support for both local
projects and national
disasters such as the
tsunami and Hurricane
Katrina.
Locally he was in-
strumental in the main-
tenance and upkeep of
the Bryant Library and
was a xture at Sauk
Centre Country Club.
Its dif cult to en-
capsulate such a full
life of many years into
a few paragraphs as
DuBois seemed
to be involved
in so much. His
grandson, Tyler
Carlson, provided
the eulogy at Sat-
urdays informal
gathering and said:
Pat DuBois was
many things to
many people. Fa-
ther. Grandfather.
Husband. Brother.
Uncle. Farmer.
Banker. Athlete. Politician.
Fire ghter. Outdoorsman.
Philanthropist. Conservation-
ist. Irishman and St. Pattys
Day enthusiast. Democrat.
Staunch Democrat. Be-care-
ful-arguing-politics-with-me-
because-you-will-not-change-
my-mind-Democrat. Mentor.
Guide. Storyteller. Friend.
As such, in consider-
ing the life of Grandpa Pat, it
is impossible to separate the
banker from the farmer from
the father from the friend. It
seems equally impossible,
however, to speak to all of
these roles, particularly when
talking of a man with so many
talents and interests who lived
97 rich and active years.
Tyler talked about his
grandfathers love for the land
and his love for the game of
golf. Pat grew up on a farm
