____________________________________________________________________________________ An elementary school music teacher at PAS Reports To: Principal and/or Assistant Principal Length of Assignment: Primary purpose: To create a comprehensive elementary grade music program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop musical skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for upper elementary grade education in accordance with each students ability; establish good relationships with parents and other staff members. 1) Responsibilities: Duties of this job include, but are not limited to: 1. Teaches music in English to students in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the school, and carries out other appropriate learning activities. 2. Develops lesson plans in English and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. 3. Uses a variety of instruction strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, etc. 4. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction. 5. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. 6. Evaluates students academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports or periodic report cards as requested. 7. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students progress and interpret the school program. 8. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems. 9. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers. 10. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by professional growth activities. 11. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate principal to develop the method by which the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with guidelines. 12. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records. 13. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day. 14. Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the testing programs approved by the school. 15. Participates in curriculum development programs as required. 16. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities which can take place beyond normal class schedule (after school). 17. Participates in after school, or evening or weekend activities that are planned in the school calendar or the department. 18. Manages student behavior in the classroom and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations. 19. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 20. Establishes and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents. 21. Uses acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Participates in the staff development program. Demonstrates interest and initiative in professional improvement. Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. Keeps informed of and complies with regulations and policies for classroom teachers. Compiles, maintains, and file all reports, records and other documents required. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Assumes professional responsibility for providing learning experiences in music and the performing arts and supervision of students in a supportive and positive climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the established Core Curriculum Content Standards and Benchmarks, using approved curricula, materials, and directives of the school. Achieving academic excellence requires that the music teacher work collaboratively with other members of the school staff and with parents. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of music and have excellent experience in teaching and working with students in the field of music, unless entering teaching from an alternative certification program. Demonstrate personal skills and creative talents in music, preferably proficiency with the piano. Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning. Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary. Demonstrate the ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.

The Music Teacher shall perform all job functions and assume all responsibilities outlined in the Manuals of Human Resources Department and/or Elementary School division handed to the prospect. The Elementary Teacher or Secondary Teacher Job Description. The Music Teacher is an integral part of the total school program and has specific professional responsibilities related to the certification held and professional position assigned, and shall plan and implement instruction to ensure that all students meet and exceed the Core Curriculum Content and Benchmarks in the broad categories of the visual and performing arts: 1. Sing and play a varied repertoire of music a. Sing or play music representing diverse genres and cultures, with appropriate style for the work being performed, including two and up to three part harmony. b. Perform accurately and expressively individually, in small and large ensembles (i.e., choir), in a developmentally appropriate range, demonstrating expressiveness, style, technique, and stage presence c. Perform independent parts accurately and within an ensemble demonstrating well developed ensemble skills 2. Read music from traditional and non-traditional notation a. Recognize and interpret symbols and terms referring to the elements of music (including but not limited to: pitch, rhythm, articulation, tempo, meter, dynamics, melody, harmony) b. Sight-read accurately at a developmentally appropriate level 3. Analyze and evaluate own performances a. Identify and apply stylistically appropriate criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of a variety of performances, using music vocabulary, b. Critique performance etiquette using appropriate criteria

4. Improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments a. Improvise short melodies, unaccompanied and with given rhythmic accompaniments, each in a consistent style, meter, and tonality b. Improvise variations on a simple melody that involve both rhythm and pitch 5. Compose and arrange music using notation a. Compose and notate a medium-length song for two voices (melody and its corresponding harmony) using teacher specified guidelines b. Arrange a given piece of music for different instrumentation c. Compose a short piece for non-traditional sounds or electronic media d. Explain why various forms of notation evolved (i.e., chant, guitar tablature, lead sheets, percussion notation, 20th century) e. Create and notate a harmonic accompaniment for a simple melody (e.g. I, IV, V) 6. Analyze and evaluate own creations a. Explain own compositional choices using appropriate music terminology and criteria b. Compare own compositions with those of established composers using appropriate terminology and style-appropriate criteria c. Compare own improvisations with those of established improvisers using appropriate terminology and style-appropriate criteria 7. Understand the historical contributions and cultural dimensions of music a. Identify and explain the stylistic characteristics of various periods of Western classical music and the more popular idioms. b. Explain the roles of musicians and composers (e.g., orchestra conductor, folk singer, church organist) in various musical settings and cultures c. Explain how political, historical and cultural norms and expectations influence the creation of music and vice versa 8. Understand relationships among the arts and disciplines outside the arts a. Describe similarities and differences among the characteristics of music, theatre, visual arts, and dance within a particular historical period or culture b. Identify and describe the cultural, political, and historical influences on works of all art forms from various time periods (e.g., the influence of Napoleon on Beethovens Third Symphony and ) c. Describe how music is interpreted through math d. Describe how personal musical taste has evolved over time 9. Analyze, evaluate, and respond to varied musical repertoire and performances a. Identify and analyze, using music terminology, the use of complex forms (e.g. sonata allegro, fugue) and musical elements in a variety of music Identify/classify world music (non-Western, including host country and subgroups of the student population) by style, using musical terminology b. Visually and aurally identify common instruments from a variety of cultures c. Identify and apply stylistically appropriate criteria, using music vocabulary, for evaluating the effectiveness of a variety of others musical performances and creations d. 1. Emphasis shall be on understanding the processes and cultural context of the arts as well as on the traditional emphasis on performing music, dance, and theatre. 2. Provide a variety of learning experiences so that students demonstrate skills and concepts learned through individual and group performances, portfolios, and a variety of communication mediums, including electronic media presentations. 3. Review periodically the performing arts curriculum for the district and recommend modifications when appropriate so that the curriculum serves as a framework for planning sequential. 9. Provide a nurturing, supportive, and positive classroom climate that encourages student responsibility, using positive motivation, clear classroom routines, challenging instructional strategies, and effective classroom management techniques. 10. Discipline students in a fair and consistent manner, using school approved procedures. Seek assistance of the parents and the Principal or designated supervisor as needed. 11. Establish a professional rapport with students that earns their respect. 12. Communicate regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice, so as to create a cooperative relationship to support the child in the school. 13. Assess and interpret the social needs, emotional needs and learning styles of students, using a variety of assessment techniques and data. 14. Plan and adjust the teaching methods accordingly, requesting advice and assistance from specialists when appropriate. 15. Assist with the preparation, monitoring, and implementation of Individualized Education Plans for selected students assigned to the class. 16. Employ a variety of methods for students to demonstrate learning and accomplishments. 17. Evaluate and grade homework, assignments, and tests in a timely fashion, providing feedback to the student on performance. 18. Maintain records and provide evidence of growth and progress to parents and to students. 19. Assume responsibility for all students within the school, beyond those specifically assigned, supervising in a fair and constructive manner to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. 20. Assist with extra curricular activities, supporting the total program of the school. 21. Instruct, advise, coach, and supervise extra curricular activities, including interscholastic and academic competition, and fine art programs. 22. Attend student events to demonstrate genuine interest in the life of the students. 23. Ensure the safety and health of all students, notifying the administration of any unsafe conditions, following established procedures. 24. Create a stimulating, attractive, organized, functional, healthy, and safe classroom, with proper attention to the visual, acoustic, and thermal environments. 25. Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports as required by law and regulation or requested by the Principal or designated supervisor. Maintain accurate attendance records. 26. Account for all funds collected from students. 27. Work cooperatively with adults assigned to the classroom (e.g., paraprofessionals, student teachers, parents, and volunteers), establishing clear expectations for roles and responsibilities. 28. Serve as a role model for students, dressing and grooming professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the honorable profession of teaching.

Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the community. 30. Attend required staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees. 31. Participate in curriculum and program development, and in the selection of materials and equipment to support instruction. 32. Notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids. 33. Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiences. 34. Summarize, interpret, and disseminate current developments in learning, instructional strategies and classroom management through reading of professional journals, participation in professional development, and involvement in professional organizations. 35. Complete the required clock hours of the school-approved continuing professional development every year in accordance with the schools policies. 36. Recommend to the Principal or designated supervisor the supplies and equipment needed to support instruction and assist with ordering, following established procedures and budgetary allotment. 37. Maintain in safe working condition and safely operate electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities. 38. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines. JOB
