The impact of social media has been highly significant in the evolution of online participation. An integrated and successful social media campaign effectively engages customers and improves customer service delivery. In order to better engage and communicate with residents and customers, social media needs to be an integral part of the organisations marketing and communication activities. Social networks have been useful as a new channel for broadcast communications, but few government organisations have fully grasped how it can be used as a powerful tool to engage in a two-way dialogue and build meaningful relationships with residents. Many government organisations are still risk averse to social media and dont fully understand what online consulting is beyond Facebook. Public relations has moved far beyond the era of the media release and the buzz-words today are; content, engagement and stories! Communication professionals require a skill-set that was once more suited to a television or radio station than a public service department.
About the workshop leader: Kylie Johnson is an award winning communications specialist with a background in digital media, public relations and radio and television journalism. Kylie is considered a digital content specialist, creating a highly successful podcast series for the CSIRO, as well as video and online community engagement platforms. She has worked for several Government departments and statutory authorities, including CSIRO, Department of Climate Change, Department of Environment, Department of Agriculture and Customs. Kylie has a strong background in broadcast journalism, working for Channel Seven and 2GB Radio, where she had her own current affairs show, was executive producer, newsreader and chief of staff. She has also worked for the BBC, ABC and SBS.

Understanding when to use this approach and how to successfully design and execute these types of crowdsourcing initiatives is therefore becoming an essential skill for public sector communicators, policy officers and program managers. This workshop will cover the essentials of when to consider crowdsourcing as a tool and how to design and manage an effective process to harness the 'wisdom of the crowd' while managing the expectations of government and traditional stakeholders.
About the workshop leader: The workshop is being led by Craig Thomler, Australia's best known Government 2.0 advocate and a practitioner with almost 20 years experience in online community engagement. Craig spent over 10 years creating and managing innovative new companies and products and over five years working in the Australian Public Service on whole-of-government online initiatives. For the last 18 months he has led Delib Australia, a global leader in the development of online engagement solutions for governments around the world.

Booking conditions 1. Bookings can be submitted at any stage prior to the event, subject to availability. A limited allocation is being held and booking early is therefore recommended. In the event of the booking not being accepted by Ark Group Australia the total amount will be refunded. 2. Payment must be received in full prior to the course. 3. All speakers are correct at the time of printing, but are subject to variation without notice. 4. If the delegate cancels after the booking has been accepted, the delegate will be liable to the following cancellation charges: Cancellations notified over 45 days prior to the event will not incur a cancellation fee. In the event of a cancellation being between 45 and 30 days prior to the event, a 20% cancellation fee will be charged.
