FEBRUARY 2014 Volume 4

From Our Principal

Dear Bailey Lake Families,
Snow, cold, and windWhat a bizarre winter thus far! The district will communicate information in regards to the number of school days we have missed. This information will be forthcoming Parents of 3rd-5th graders will receive scores from the 2013 MEAP assessment as soon as the reports are released from the state. On Tuesday, February 11, from 9:15-11:15, Bailey Lake will host a Community Visit. This is something each Clarkston Community Schools building is doing to showcase student learning learning and thinking. Visitors will participate in a thinking routine, observe the thinking around the school, visit a classroom, and hear more about the manner in which Bailey Lake is becoming a Culture of Thinking. Please consider attending. Please continue to send proper winter gear for your student to wear during recess. Reminder: we go outside unless the feels like temperature is below zero. Thanks for sending your student prepared Sincerely, Glenn Gualtieri, Principal

Community Service

From Our PTA President

Dear Bailey Lake Families,
On January 28, in the midst of cold weather and school cancellations, nine people representing Clarkston Community Schools boarded a plane for Washington, D.C., to advocate for our children. I, as well as Mr. Gualtieri, had the privilege to be a part of this team. Led by Steve Hyer, a member of the CCS Board of Education with a substantial experience in advocacy efforts, we had a full schedule: Congressman Kerry Bentivolio, the Michigan Governors Office, offices of Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, as well as of Congressmen Tim Walberg, Gary Peters, and Mike Rogers. Historically speaking, advocacy was not a new endeavor for our school district. For a number of years, our Board of Education had been sending its members to Washington D.C. and Lansing alike. This time, however, the scope of representation was entirely different our district administration was accompanied by principals and parents people who have immediate day-to-day interactions with children. This new initiative came as a response to the desperate situation our public schools find themselves due to a lack of appropriate legislation. While the No Child Left Behind program failed, no other education-related act came in its place (even though reauthorization was due in 2007). The House has passed its version of the new act; the Senate hasnt and there is no timeframe for it to happen. Meanwhile, the Federal Government (Secretary of Education) filled this void by creating a new set of regulations, which force the State of Michigan into imposing nearly unbearable restrictions and conditions on our school district. Our schools are severely underfunded. Our Superintendent and BOE have very little say in how to allocate funds in our district. We, parents, pay for classroom supplies and essential needs through our PTA funds. We are being measured and re-measured. Schools are required to provide improvement plans, and report, report, report. What this means for you and me is that our children are not receiving nearly a month of instructional time per school year because their teachers spend it on countless assessments and reports. Some childrens needs can never be met, as they require more support than one teacher can physically provide. At times, I believe, all the good we have at Bailey Lake rests on pure enthusiasm and dedication of our staff and parents. And then we all are punished for doing better than other districts. Our advocacy team took these all to Capitol Hill. We didnt advocate for all schools, but the district we know well our Clarkston Community Schools. Mr. Gualtieri shared examples from our classrooms; I described how it affected Mark and Sasha, my children, and their classmates and teachers. These examples were real; they had faces attached to themI believe we have been heard. We were encouraged to continue our efforts. Did this really matter? Maybe it was just a drop in the ocean, but one never knows which drop could be this final one that actually makes the difference. Arina Bokas BLE PTA President

GRADE AT A GLANCE
Here, some third graders are sharing their thinking and making their thinking visible to others. In Reading Workshop, they are discussing evidence from the text to prove their theories about characters. In Writing Workshop, they are creating displays to share their understanding of how to write personal essays. The poster is their 10x2 Thinking Routine, guiding them to observe the image closely and describe with detail. Third graders have grown so much already this year! What an amazing group of students!
