Dance Option

What is the course about?


If you have enjoyed dance throughout lower school, taking GCSE Dance will enable you to extend your skills and understanding of the subject. It also offers you the opportunity to develop your creative ability as an individual and as part of a group, at the same time as aiming to improve your self image and confidence. It is a subject that makes demands on both mind and body. Have you thought of a career in dance? Journalism, administration, movement therapy and teaching are all examples of jobs where GCSE Dance could be of use.

What topics will I study?

What kind of class activities will there be?


The majority of time is spent taking part in practical work. Improvising, increasing movement vocabulary and taking part in workshops from professional dancers/animateurs. There is one theory lesson each fortnight which will be a classroom lesson. In addition to practical activities you will have the chance to watch DVD extracts, look at photographs and visit the theatre to watch live professional dance performances.

What kind of homework assignments will there be?


Your homework will be a combination of practical and written tasks. The dance studio is available once a week for GCSE students to practise. Theory homework will include answering basic questions about safe practice or dances you might be shown on DVD, writing essays about dance works in general, researching choreographers and it may also include reviewing a performance you have seen.

What percentage of the final GCSE grade is for coursework?


80% for practical assessments. The practical assessments are: a solo set dance performance, performance in a duo/group, solo choreography and group choreography.

What percentage of the final grade is for written examinations at the end of Year 11?
20%.

What are the most interesting parts of the GCSE course?


At the end of the course, many students have expressed how much they have enjoyed dance as an option: sharing ideas with others; learning to broaden their opinions about dance; improving the ability both to perform and create dances; having the opportunity to work with professional dance companies and going to see live professional dance at the theatre.
