Dematerialization is an impact of ICT that reduces the total amount of resources used in production. This may mean a migration of a product or service that still serves its primary function yet reduces the amount of materials needed like the digitalization of music les. Moreover, dematerialization can be a result of increased group sharing schemes which lead to fewer products needed to serve a larger number of people. " Integrating ICT into existing products also leads to increased e'ciency in many sectors: power, transport, agriculture and land use, manufacturing, building management, product m a n u f a c t u r e a n d co n s u m e r s e r v i ce s . T h i s increased e'ciency leads to higher productivity and profits, more a vailable time, and most importantly a reduction in total greenhouse gas $GHG% emissions. " It is clear that information and communication technology has profound applications across many business sectors. By leveraging ICT, this year alone, we will see a 16.5 # abatement in global CO2 emissions $equivalent to 21.6 billion barrels of oil, Russia's GDP, ( 1.9 trillion USD, or 29.5 million jobs!%. " The development of a sustainable urban metropolis requires interactions among many stakeholder groups including consumers, business leaders, and politicians. This foresight is needed to drive change and transition attitudes to action. Moreover, the clear advantages of sustainable de velopment need to be communicated to stakeholders and consumers. These motivations primarily are economical in nature including reduction of resource consumption, increased e'ciency, and time savings. These mechanisms also lead to more sustainable development and further shape attitudes surrounding environmental stewardship. "

community stakeholders to take interest in sustainable cities. With urban cities recognizing Siemens Solutions as a necessary component in addressing increased urbanization and sustainable development, Siemens products have become an integral part of modern cities. Capitalizing on integration of ICT in Siemens products, Siemens developed a mobile phone application that communicated the impact Siemens products had on individual environmental impact. ! The goal was to make sustainability sexy, to make the benets of ICT on environmental impact tangible for urban residents, said Klaus Helmrich " Chief Technology O&cer. The inspiration for the application came from looking at other industries and how they engage and motivate their consumers. Other companies have had great success in engaging customers through interactive mobile applications that track and share progress towards a certain goal, said Helrich. ! within the community. Helmrich says, (Siemens) is now known as a community builder in cities.! The application provides the consumer with valuable knowledge of their environmental impact (or reduction in impact) through using Siemens ICT solutions while providing valuable consumer information on travel preferences, product purchases, tra&c and pedestrian routes, etc., says Helmrich. The application may also suggest ways to further improve sustainable impact: reduce power consumption, water usage, transportation routes, etc. ! The company is looking to expand and integrate other companies mobile connected products that can communicate with the app to further give the consumer an idea of sustainable impact. Moreover, an aspect of a growing city and a sustainable economy is economic progress but this doesnt necessarily mean consuming more goods. Siemens recognized the value in consuming culture and has integrated cultural events into the application. !

Initially, business analysts were leery of Siemens hardline approach to sustainability in their business model. Furthermore, others feared that the introduction of yet another mobile phone app would fall on deaf ears within the consumer markets. However, stock shares have risen 40* since 2014 when Siemens committed fully to ICT solutions and sustainable development. Moreover, Siemens was able to convey the added convenience, e&ciency improvements, and time savings activities that ICT solutions allowed for customers in urban cities. This awareness lead to increased interest in continued sustainable development in urbanized cities.! In the recent Siemens Annual Report, CEO Joe Kaeser reported the success of ICT integration and the mobile application. It turns out, when consumers are given knowledge of how sustainable development contributes to cost and time savings along with a lessened environmental impact, they demand further ICT enhancements, says Kaeser. I am proud Siemens has answered by providing ICT solutions that addressed sustainable development and an increased interest in sustainable cities. !

When we decided that we needed real change in the City of Malm, we recognized that we needed to build upon the revolutionary achievements of Vstra Hamnen, with its 100 percent renewable energy usage from wind, solar and geothermal sources; its interconnectivity between rail, bus, bike and foot transportation; and its distributed energy management systems, and look at how we could become a more efficient municipality through mobility and ICT.! Siemens Smart Grid Division was able to greatly facilitate the development of mobility and ICT solutions in Malm by leveraging the existing distributed energy management platform it had developed for the utilities and major industrial buildings of Malm, and directing it towards individuals within the municipality.! The great work of the Malm & Me application, developed by Siemens, engaged the citizenry in improving mobility in the municipality, and thus reduced energy demands and consumption, and reduced the municipalitys carbon footprint beyond zero.! Whilst the adjustment phase of the application for the citizens of Malm was di&cult at times, the educational hurdle wa s o vercome with e n g a g e m e n t a n d p e r s i s te n c e o n b e h a l f o f everyone involved.! The Malm and Me Urban Mobility application developed by Siemens was seen as a crucial step in the direction to beyond zero emissions and energy savings.! The application connected citizens to the often invisible opportunities to enga ge in energy efficient and time"saving behavior in the municipality by providing them with easy to understand feedback on their daily transportation decisions and recommendations for better decisions in the future.!
Hllbara Malm

The application was developed by Siemens by engaging all of its business units to provide data into the shared application platform.! The platform was encoded with an algorithm which recognized the connections between the product divisions and calculated the most e f f i c i e n t u s e o f t h e m w i t h i n a d e s i g n a te d municipality.! The first step of the application was a straightforward information stage which provided the application user with real time data about what their decisions meant from a sustainability perspective.! A user could be on a bus in the centre of Malm and the application was able to communicate the exact impact of the journey as well as provide feedback on how the journey could be made better in the future.! All the while, the business units at Siemens were a b l e to u n d e r s t a n d b e t te r t h e b e h a v i o r o f commuters and identify cross business opportunities for increased e&ciency gains.! The municipality was very much engaged with Siemens in this period of the applications life and were able to implement larger scale e&ciency and ICT gains also, which would be fed back into the application.! The partnership with Siemens enabled The City of Malm to make better and more efficient infrastructure investments which were connected to the application, leading to a more informed citizenry.! The people appreciated the fact that we were justifying our decisions and, by using the application to communicate changes in infrastructure and the reasons for those changes, the citizens of Malm engaged with the civic

dimension of their lives and helped us to make the city better and better.! A positive outcome of the application which had not been expected was that through the e'ective communication of intermodal transport solutions and recommendations, as well as the ability for people to engage in asset sharing # such as car" pooling, bus"filling and advanced train scheduling $ , citizens were able to understand better the challenges of citywide management and instead of being a'ected negatively by mobility constraints, they were able to inform them and a'ect them positively through feedback from the application and their combined ability to work together in the name of e&ciency.! Since the implementation of the Malm and Me application, the people of this great and evolving city ha ve been able to become more active stakeholders in the citys future whilst being positively a'ected by mobility gains.! By sharing cars with fellow citizens; lling buses to the ideal capacity and allowing the trains to operate with less carriages through advanced train scheduling, the people have become more understanding of one another in their daily engagement with the c i t y, l e a d i n g f o r happier and more productive people who go home to their families ever y night knowing that they were actively involved in the functioning of this great city.!

On top of the mobility gains, improved well"being and civic engagement of the population, and the reduction to beyond zero carbon emissions, the City of Malm was able to become so e&cient with the help of the Siemens Malm and Me mobility application that taxes on the population for city infrastructure investments and services were able to be reduced for the rst"time ever.! The City of Malm had not only succeeded in making the people more e&cient, it had made itself a far more leaner and e&cient vehicle for service delivery itself.! The importance of the role of Siemens in this evolution of efficient ser vice provision and mobility for the City of Malm cannot be understated " the Malm and Me application de" mystied the technological advances for the people of the municipality and made them better and more engaged in the challenges of their city as a result.
