ST. MARY SCHOOL SCIENCE EXPO

February 5, 2014

Dear St. Mary School Parents and Students, The Science Expo is just a few weeks away! The students have been doing a wonderful job working on their projects. I am sure you are as proud of them as I am. It has been a wonderful experience for me to see them enjoying this very valuable learning experience. As you know, the Science Expo is Wednesday, February 26th from 6-7:30 pm. I changed it up a little this year to offer a variety of learning opportunities for our students and to incorporate technology into the Science Expo. Because we have a myriad of scientific opportunities, the name was changed to reflect the diversity of the event, and hence, is called the Science Expo. Students have had the choice to conduct an experiment, create an invention, or research a science topic and utilize art or media to illustrate the scientific concepts. It has been interesting to see the choices that students have made. Hopefully, each has chosen a project of interest to them which lays the groundwork for a wonderful learning experience. Students were also given the option to work independently or with a partner or small group, giving them the opportunity to learn effective skills for collaboration. Our 8th graders are also bringing a new flair to the Science Expo by participating as time travelers. Each student has chosen someone to research who has made a contribution to science. Students have researched their chosen person and you will hear their interviews via podcasts at the Expo which will include graphics showing the time traveler and the person they researched. Mrs. Sawyer has been working closely with me and the students to assist with the technology portions of the Science Expo. Students have been asked to record a one minute video of them giving a brief presentation of their project. They should wear their uniform in the video. The video must be emailed to Mrs. Sawyer by February 19th. She will compile the videos into a file for the judges to view at the Science Expo. Judges will assess the projects during the day and winners will be announced at the Expo. Our Elementary School students will present a class science project in the Expo. Our art teachers, Mrs. Hoffner and Mrs. Train, have been hard at work with their art classes incorporating science into art to decorate our school and gym. Please make sure you take a moment to see the students artwork as well that night. I sincerely thank Mr. Hogan, Mrs. Sawyer, Mrs. Hoffner, Mrs. Train and all the teachers, staff, parents, and students who have worked so hard to prepare for our First Annual Science Expo. Judging from the hard work and enthusiasm of the students, it is sure to be a success. Please note the gym will be open from 7:30-8:15am the day of the Expo so students may set up their projects. They need a solid color rectangular tablecloth that compliments their display board color. Please refer to the students timelines for a checklist of materials they need the day of the Expo. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Mrs. Patty Barse pbarse@smrschool.org; 692-8537, ext. 315
