2013 Annual Report

A Letter from the Director

Monday-Wednesday We like to call 2013 The Year of Transition. We said goodbye to the old and hello to a 10 AM8 PM bright new building and services for the residents of the city of Westfield and Washington Thursday & Friday Township! 10 AM6 PM Beginning in March, the library began opening from Saturday 1-5 PM on Sundays. When finished, the entire existing building will receive paint and new carpet. Four new quiet study rooms have been completed and a new 1500 square foot lower level will house Westfield a community room. The old A/V area is Washington being transformed into a computer lab and business center. The addition (above the community room) will also house a dedicated Teen Area. Mike Thomas, President One major change you will notice is that the A/V circulation desk will be integrated into the main circulation desk so that you can now visit one Brian Morales, place to pick up holds, checkout and return items. Another major Vice President change is that the adult fiction and non-fiction collections have switched places. The fiction is now located at the south end of the library and the Paul Catlin, non-fiction, biography, and foreign language collections are located in the northeast corner Treasurer of the library. Also new books for adults are located in the area immediately outside of the Sumner Room where the magazines used to reside. Nancy Knochel, Secretary Some aspects of the project needed to be taken out of the base bid due to lack of funds and a capital campaign was launched in June of 2013 to raise the funds needed to finish Members, landscaping, replace furniture, etc. Recently, the librarys capital campaign fund received Birch Dalton a considerable donation of $25,000 in the names of Carolyn and Dick Robinson. I would also like to thank the Friends of the Westfield Library for their continued support through their fundraising efforts. The Friends of the Westfield Library annually fund the incentives for the Summer Reading Program. They also supplement special purchases the library may need that are not covered by the operating budget. They have also contributed approximately $12,000 to the library building fund. Additionally, I would like to thank the dedicated staff and Library Board of Trustees for their hard work and continued efforts that make the Westfield Washington Public Library a valuable asset to the City of Westfield and Washington Township. Finally, I would like to thank you, our patrons, for enduring the side effects of this project the nearly constant banging and drilling noises, crowded aisle ways, your favorite materials being moved again and again, cancelled programs, etc. Weve tried our best to help make the transitions as smooth as possible and are proud to say that we only had to close for one day in the last eight months! Painting Class Talented artist Jan Roland teaches a class in Watercolor Painting and Techniques on Thursday, February 20 @ 10:15 AM. No previous art experience is required, and the class fee of $15 includes all materials. Euchre Group Tax Assistance for Seniors AARP is again offering free tax assistance to seniors (you do not have to be an AARP member). Representatives are in the Sumner Room every Friday from February 1 to April 4 between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Clients are seen on a first come, first served basis as long as they have signed up in advance for that particular day. Please contact Information Services at 317-896-9391 to reserve a spot. ESL Classes The library offers adult ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. Students pay for class materials. Students will be assigned to a specific class after they submit their completed registration form and submit it to the Information/Reference Services Desk.

Book Discussion Groups The Mystery Book Discussion Group is talking about A Cold and Lonely Place by Sara J. Henry when they meet @ 1 PM on Wednesday, February 5. Come join other mystery lovers at a once-amonth discussion group that meets at the library. You are invited even if you havent read the book!

Friends of the Westfield Library

The Friends of the Library mostly functioned behind the scenes in 2013. We were signed up to have a booth at the Farmers Market downtown but it was cancelled. We did donate some promotional materials for the librarys groundbreaking and summer reading kickoff party, and like every year, fund the summer reading prize budget. With the building in disarray soon after that it was a miracle that we had room to set up two book sales! We still raised enough money to buy two replacement Wii guitar controls for the teens. We also donated a portion of the cost of the Freegal music subscription service for all library patrons. This coming year we would like to do more so if you have time to volunteer, let us know.
