que le pongan salsa analysis p4 QUE LE PONGAN SALSA (EL MENU) by EL GRAN COMBO - AN ANALYSIS GOALS 1. follow the clave 2. identify the phrases

CLAVE 1. two measure rhythmic pattern that is the basis of afro-cuban music 2. 3 notes in one bar, 2 in the next. thus 3-2 clave or 2-3 clave (the reverse bar order) 3. not always in the music verbatim, it is implied by the rhythms of the other instruments. a. Timbale patterns define clave the best, however without knowing the patterns it can be difficult to determine 2-3 or 3-2 clave. This analysis will demonstrate other clues to listen for.

On the score are notes provided to help you follow the clave. In this example you will see both 3-2 and 2-3 clave throughout as the phasing changes. PHRASE a completed musical thought. Comparable to a sentence. a phrase is a certain number of bars or measures(words in the sentence) with a strong conclusion (period.). Even bar phrases are most common. in the case of "que le pongan salsa" both even and odd numbered bar phrases are found. odd phrasing can be found anywhere in a salsa song but it is most commonly found in the intro, verses, and sections before the montuno and mambo sections (as is the case in "que le pongan salsa"). 2012 ahora si music
