The Cause study - E-bay How E-bay started Pierre omidyar is the son of French-Iranian parents who arrived in America in the early 1970 to gain academic careers. Omidyar was a student at Tufts University near Boston where he spent much of his time exercising his passing for apple programming. He found his first business called ink development corporation in 1991.later it turned to a business based on online commerce and, in 1996 Microsoft bought out e-shops making omidyar a millionaire for his shares. After he joined general magic in 1994, a mobile communications start-up company, created an auctionweb the first major step to an online market place. He had an ambition to create the perfect market and believed the internet was the ideal mechanisms for making this happen. Many academicians and entrepreneurs spent a great deal of time and energy thinking up the killer application that would harness the power of the new medium for communication to create an entirely new and lucrative business. Omidyar decided that his application would be based on the auction model where people would come together electronically to reach an agreed price for a transaction .he decided to offer the service free. His first program allows users to do only three things. 1. List items. 2. View items. 3. Place bids. In the beginning, all these freelance technologies came under echo bay technology group. Later it turned to E-bay. In the first few months of 1997, traffic on auction web was so heavy that it attracted over one million in two-weeks of time. Now the world-recognizes E-bay operates in thirty two international markets. It has 135 million registered members and, who buy or sell goods worth $1050 every second from over $34 billion item listed. The mission of E-bay The mission of e-bay is a statement of internet that reflects the philosophy of founder Pierre Omidyar in creating the perfect market. Creating a transparent, open and free market with feedback forums where users can offer opinions for eBay users. Using the forums, users can rate the experience of buying or selling with another trader. Ratings are simply defined as positive, negative or nature with a space for additional comments. The feedback is available to all who access the website.

From Considering all the Clear Guides that are provided by E-Bay it seems that E-Bay Provides any user with Explained guides in how things are done on E-Bay. And the procedures to go through when performing a task seem to be simplified. This is a good way to attract users and customers to E-Bay since most the internet users are looking to perform tasks with ease and fast, saving time. Task 2 History of E-Bay

E-Bay was founded by Pierre Omidyar in his Living Room in San Jose, California, US, back in September 1995. It was meant to be a marketplace for individuals at the start. In 1998, Pierre and his cofounder Jeff Skoll brought in Meg Whitman to sustain the success. Meg Whitman had studied at the Harvard Business School and had learned the importance of branding at companies. Meg removed her senior staff from companies such as Pepsico and Disney, created an experienced management team with an average of 20 years of business experience and built a strong vision for the company, that eBay is a company that's in the business of connecting people, not selling goods. They quickly changed it from only auctioning collectibles and moved into an array of upscale markets where the average sale price (ASP) is higher. ASP is a key metric in determining eBay's transaction fees, so increasing the ASP became an important item. By forging partnerships with name brands such as GM, Disney and Sun, eBay has managed to do exactly that. Sun has sold. $10 million worth of equipment and it now lists between 20 and 150 items per day. Search Engine Optimization(SEO) friendly A website is unusable if no one can discover it. Make sure that the e-commerce website design and improvement company should design and grow your website as per Search Engine Optimization principles to amplify the ranking of your website in famous search engines. How the web site keeps the customers satisfying to their requirements (by how Customers are handled) 1) How well they're treated: Persons (even business purchasers) care about the person touch. They need to be treated together admiration and fairness. They require feeling like appreciated customers whose time and view matter. If person cannot protect you to treat them correct, they definitely will not protect you with their money. Whether or not the auction happens depends on whether the customer textures taken for granted or taken. Correspondingly important is how the commercial deals among issues or complaints as they arise. Generate faults need not be fatal, customers understands that. However, the readiness to fix them and minimalize their impact on the purchaser is vital: determine it instantly, among the right method, can even reinforce the bond. However, fumbling the ball a second time easily is not for-given. 2) How conveniently the buying procedure went: From begin to end; did each stages of the transaction go smoothly? Could purchasers get the responses or support they required? Could they discover what they came for (or why not)? Was the operation arranges to convenience them 3) How much affliction they had to endure: Afflictions are of two categories those that should not have occurred (glitches), or those that happen to everybody such as long waits, shortage of parts, multiple visits, etc. A purchaser is willing to tolerate a little troublesomeness, but not for large, not every time. Your job is to minimalize troublesomeness so they do not arise - not treat them like business as familiar. Here is where the support, notified employees will prepare or break the commercial. First in building clienteles rapport, expectance their anxieties while evading issues. 4) How many mind games is a play on them: Sorry to say, the word "sales" are misused too often. Selling isn't an opportunity to manipulate the potential buyer to do what the seller wants, but rather provide the buyer with what he wants. No one wants to feel been misled about prices, delivery dates or terms of the sale. Even a hint of such treatment kills trust, kills their willingness to hear you out. And if a per-son feels tricked into buying, they won't buy again.

5) How well the Business Corporation has its act together: Beginning among the main impression, did the whole thing about the business live up to its promise or renowned? If each set of the operation performs smoothly as an assimilated entirely, ponder the customer well served. When the sections are incompatible or full of snags, it screams "small potatoes". That frights business away. Even if the problems are minor, they pull the plug on safe. Providentially, a center on your "how" yields big advantages from fast and economical solutions. Get your "hows" in order and you will drive the rivalry crazy. Clienteles notice when they are preserves well. Let your distinctiveness luster in the "how" of client - pleasing attempts. It pays off in your basis line. How easy to find the expectation of users based on web site structure Attractiveness

In my view eBays home page will catch the eye of many of the internet surfers. And I think its colorful and meaningful home pages are one of the main secrets about catching this much customers.

Task 5 An Article on how eBay entered to the B2B System March 15, 2000 10:00 AM PST eBay taps business-to-business boom By Sandeep Junnarkar Staff Writer, CNET News eBay, the largest online person-to-person auctioneer, said it plans to plow into business-to-business trading, hoping to get a sliver of the expected business e-commerce boom. The San Jose, Calif.-based company announced today it is launching its eBay Business Exchange service to target the small business market. The company first began testing business-to-business (B2B) trading in Germany last fall. Analysts also noted that small businesses were already busy using eBay to purchase computer products and office supplies, and today's announcement merely makes B2B an official eBay strategy. "eBay created a marketplace, and people chose to use it differently," said Daniel Ries, an analyst at C.E. Unterberg, Towbin, an investment banking firm. "Now, eBay is putting their own marketing might behind the B2B effort." For eBay, the move into the U.S. business-to-business market seemed inevitable. The company is expected to use its brand reach in the consumer e-commerce market to help jump-start its business-to-business push. Nearly every sector on the Internet and offline--from automakers to payment systems services and enterprise software providers--is trying to cash in on the e-business explosion. The use of online exchanges, in which companies buy and sell to each other directly on the Net, is predicted to generate huge savings and profits for suppliers as well as manufacturers. The leading research firms have the business-to-business market pegged between $2.7 trillion and $7.3 trillion by 2004 from about $131 billion in 1999. In comparison, Forrester Research projects business-toconsumer spending will reach $184.5 billion in 2004, up from $20.3 billion last year. Suddenly, business exchanges are popping up almost daily. On Monday, Dell Computer joined forces with business-to-business software maker Ariba to create a marketplace for Dell's small and medium-sized customers. In recent months, automakers General Motors, Ford, Toyota and others have announced plans for exchanges. Database company Oracle has teamed up with retailers Sears and Carrefour for an exchange targeting the retail industry. The list goes on. eBay's exchange offers 34 business-related categories, including computer hardware, software, electronics, industrial equipment, office equipment and professional tools.

"The fastest growing areas on eBay over the last year have been computer equipment sales," Ries said. "This is great for the company since (computer equipment) is pretty high-priced stuff, and eBay's fee is related to the price of the goods being sold." eBay said it expects to drive traffic to its business exchange with targeted banner advertising on businessrelated sites and from its existing marketing relationships, including its deal with America Online. "Business Exchange is a natural evolution of the eBay business model," said Brian Swette, eBay's chief operating officer. The company said it doesn't plan to license its B2B trading platform to bank on some of the growing enthusiasm for companies that help set up exchanges. "We are focused on the markets that we are directly running and controlling," Swette said during a conference call with analysts and reporters. "That will be our approach for the foreseeable future." Despite announcing its foray into the business-to-business sector, shares of eBay fell neary $10 or about 5 percent, to $201 in morning trading. The stock was pushed lower on speculation that discussions with Yahoo about an alliance or possible merger had fallen through. The stock has traded as high as $234 and as low as $70.25 during the past 52 weeks. B2B Strategies Picked up by eBay over the years of 2008-2012 I Have selected a series of articles published on http://ebaystrategies.blogs.com/ebay_strategies to explain the strategies picked up by eBay over the years of 2008-2012. The Actions and steps taken as Strategic B2B Movements are noted here. Making Buyers Happy - DSRS In Jan announced changes to reward high DSRS. All sellers would receive better visibility in search. Powersellers with DSRs above a certain level would receive discounts. This was about giving sellers incentives to increase their customer service levels. When we first announced the incentives we knew that 60% of powersellers had DSRs over 4.6^67% now have DSRs of 4.6 or greater. 15% had DSRs of 4.8 and above, today 33% have DSRs of 4.8 or greater We more than doubled the number of our best sellers! Buyers are happier and are buying more. Jan 2008

Powerseller program In addition to the discounts, they are rolling out more perks to Powersellers. In July invoices, 20% discount on FVF for 4.9+ DSRs on all DSRs. 16% of all powersellers qualify for this new tier. For all Powersellers, UPS is offering a 23% UPS discount for powersellers. - July 2008 For Buyers.... (Couponing) Improving the search experience, giving top buyers a reason to come back In May started sending coupons to top buyers Buyers that redeem a coupon, buy more frequently and more These are ideal buyers - the ones that every seller wants On track to deliver millions of coupons, and even more during holidays May 2008

Retaliatory feedback eBay removed the ability to leave negatives for buyers. Buyers told eBay that it was the number one reason they were leaving. eBay has gone discount crazy - 20% cash back now avail! Up to 30%+ off if you play it right!!! Copious couponing (I'm hearing 10% off up to $100 is being flooded to registered users right now - see above and I just got a $10 off shipping for 3 items too!!) Paypal's 1.5% cash back The eBayBucks 4% (or whatever you get offered) back program And now eBay has partnered with Microsoft's Live search engine to offer 20% cash back (some people say 35%, but I only have seen 20%). Yes you heard me, 20% cash back (that's more than eBay's take rate so I don't know how the math is working on this one.) Here's the beauty - these programs don't seem to EXCLUDE each other at all June 22, 2008

Adding Snapshots to the items that are on sale on eBay July 2008

eBay introduces new 30-day FP listing with great economics More details as they become available, but according to Reuters, eBay is introducing a .35, 30-day fixedprice listing (we call it 30fp) that I think is going to change the strategy of most sellers that do any fixedprice. The trade-off is 30fp will have a higher FVF, so once the rates are published officially we'll chime in here with some thoughts on the economics and how they impact sellers. August 19, 2008

Major eBay changes - a new listing type is born! **Updated to reflect typo in 'other category tiers' and clarify effective take rate calculations. Today eBay announced (microsite and ebayink) another package of changes (fingers crossed this is the last of them for 2008!). The bulk of these changes roll mid-Sept so there's some time to ponder them and change strategies (more on that after the summary of changes). There are some minor/expected/well predicted changes such as: Electronic payment policy - eBay is eliminating non-electronic payment methods such as cash and money order. The argument is that these are the least safe methods out there. Merchant credit-card accounts and paypal (of course) are now the only valid payment options. There will be lots of consipracy theories around this effectively being a step towards a paypal-only world for eBay and what-not, but for business-oriented sellers this won't be a surprise or a big deal. Shipping limits - eBay tested these in DE and must feel they worked well as they are coming to the USA. Basically certain categories have S+H 'ceilings'. You are not allowed to list anything that has S+H above the ceiling. However, if you have multiple S+H options, only one has to be below the ceiling, others can be above (e.g. if you have standard+expedited shipping, the standard has to be below the ceiling, but expedited can be above). FVF discount for free shipping - There's going to be some pretty compelling discounts for offering free shipping. I'm guessing these will DSR based so my concern here is that it's generally well known by sellers that DSRs are broken (UPI and international) and thus I worry that eBay continues to build on this 'less than perfect' foundation. eBay to release new weapon in the 'selection' battle InDemand The general idea is as follows: eBay is (finally!) starting to get some religion around the importance of selection. The prior regime implemented many policies that in my opinion hobbled selection at eBay - frequently I tell folks that eBay "cut off its long tail". On the flipside of that coin, Amazon around the same time (mid-06), realized that mid-size retailers can bring some really interesting selection to the site that is filling out the long-tail for Amazon. They priced their third party offering with this in mind (high bar, but once you are in, no listing fees). There are two major hurdles to selection on eBay: i. Information - eBay has tons of data on who is searching for what, what listings are being watched, what millions of keywords they are buying from google, etc. However sellers never have access to that data. When your supply is blind to demand - it seems obvious that there will be unmet demand due to a fundamental lack of information parity. Channel Pricing - Frequently eBay's listing fee, final value fee or both can make it uneconomical for supply to come to the site. For example, everyone in the media categories knows that the ebay fees make it a non-starter for brand-new items to be on the site, thus eBay tends to not have big slices of 'recent releases's on the site. (mini rant - In my opinion,listing/insertion fees are the archenemy of selection. eBay argues they are quality's friend, but personally I worry more about selection and quality will take care of it self if you have a good search/finding experience.)

ii.

Enter InDemand - InDemand is a microsite at indemand.ebay.com that looks to address the two selection challenges (Info/Pricing). It does this by first providing a list of 'in demand' products based on eBay's research (this addresses the Info problem). Secondarily, InDemand gives eBay the ability to offer spot fee discounts (listng+FVF based on my understanding) for the products it feels are important for selection but due to the very broad fee structure, that product is not coming to the site.

eBay Local Here are the steps for eBay Local: The site is very location aware. On the web it uses your IP or a zip code - you can store several locations if you'd like. On your iPhone or mobile device it uses the GPS This helps to find businesses and products closer to you. In my view this is a huge improvement. eBay Announces Spring Changes - buyer/seller/wall st analysis. I. II. Buying improvements - New item page, basic photo zooming, catalog-pages, multisku/variations, buyer incentives. TRUST - eBay is making two big changes to trust. The first is they are going to make it much easier for buyers to ask for and receive returns. There will be some common area on eBay (probably in myebay) where you can say "I want to return X". This is going to be a big change for eBay sellers -many of whom will argue tooth and nail to not take any returns. There are also lots of 'as-is' sellers on eBay that will have fun with this one. Second, there's the "eBay Resolutions". Seller efficiencies - eBay announced a couple of initiatives around making sellers more efficient April 14, 2009

III.

Introducing the eBay Top Rated Seller Program or eTRS as we say in the 'biz' The logo above is the new 'badge' for the eTRS. There are a LOT of changes this new program is bringing to the World of eBay sellers so i wanted to dig into them in their own post. The way I would characterize the changes is: lowering the volume requirements, while significantly raising the quality requirements for powers sellers and then creating a super-elite status eTRS that requires you to have the highest of high customer service ratings (via DSR 2.0) and if you do, you get the rewards of 20% FVF discount as well as raised search status and the dandy little badge above 'may' be in search results.

27 | P a g e

The changes are best thought of in these chunks: Foundational changes - eBay is changing the whole game with how they look at DSRs. I call it DSR 2.0 and walk you through it here. All seller requirements - Sorry no benefits if you are a lowly 'standard seller'. Powerseller requirements - includes some 'diet' benefits. eTRS requirements - benefits.

Not your Mother's eBay -> eBay releases first round of TV ads for big end of year push!

When eBay announced Q2 results (July 2011), Donahoe teased the new ad campaign by simply saying "It's not your Mother's eBay".

Today eBay has officially released the first round of ads and I've embedded them here for your viewing pleasure. One thing that is interesting is they all focus on the mobile buying experience. I also thought it was interesting that they all had a bit of a mean streak to them as a way of drawing attention I suppose (but thankfully not as bad as the Groupon superbowl ad mean streak). I look forward to hearing your comments on the ads. If history is a predictor, these will be all over ESPN this weekend and other big audience shows. September 14, 2011

The ways and the recommendation to efficiency marketing plan Effectiveness is only a part of a good marketing plan. Effectual marketing and promotional resources are born from your main marketing plan. You need everything functioning together. More organized your advertising plan is, the more successful your advertising plan will be. Some points to create an efficiency-marketing plan

Evaluate whether you have a saleable goods. What is unique about them? Do you identify who your consumer is, and are you definite your goods will meet their necessities. Identify that a marketing plan should ascertain a perfect and distinctive plan, comprising an assigned budget, for the upcoming year's exertions to identify consumers and generate efficient contact among them. The hours invested in illustrate it up will avoid substantial wasted time in future months. Collect contextual information, comprising monetary and sales reports on present products and records of object markets, and data on consumers and contestants. Survey current consumers and collect market investigate on customers you require to reach. Spell out your general goals as fully as potential. Set actual and assessable goals. If you are not handling your own show, get a seal of sanction on these objectives from senior administration before you jump into brainstorming among your co-workers about distinctive system. In addition, even if you are handling a tiny startup, do not reduction the worth of brainstorming with entrusted advisors. Set a monetary budget. Break down heavy numbers into more distinctive ones, such as the investment compulsory to gain one new consumer. A Large-scale corporation like eBay should balance projected expenditure among industry averages for marketing dollars as a percent of sales. Allocate in-house properties. Adjudicate what actions should be outsourced perhaps Web-site design, direct-mail canvasses or trade-show setups. Generate any graphs and charts required to demonstrate distinctive segments of the plan. Determine with an evaluation instruction that comprises timelines for approaching specific objects, comprising new consumers identified, orders booked and cost maintain achieved. Accentuate what should be achieving within one year, but include shorter-term benchmarks to track outcomes along the way. Establish a schedule of meetings to evaluate progress. Write the executive outline. Though this is the first part in your ended plan, it is the last one you write, as it is really a summary. Fleetingly state the chief points of your plan, utilizing bulleted lists and short sentences. Restrict it to a single page, but comprise the most significant financial numbers.

Main areas to consider if Im with the early implementations with eBay web sites

Making the word eBay known to the world Making eBay the first choice when surfing for goods online Gaining Peoples Trust Give the website an attractive interface Make it easier to find something on eBay Have a good system to make sure the items are delivered without any complications

Now the above goals are showing areas that I should consider and they are, Marketing Web Design Customer Care Logistics If a New Site is to be popular it has to be marketed properly. And EBay is supposed to be a site for businesses and traders to trade items for money with other users and online businesses on the internet. And when implementing an efficient marketing plan we have to consider the range of audience we target and the Four Ps, Product, Price, Promotion and Place. And while covering the Four Ps, We have to cover both product based and the customer based marketing strategies to attract more crowds accordingly. Following Product-Based Marketing Strategies When following the product based marketing strategy we can attract the customers looking for a specific product. For this we have to advertise EBays products on Search Engines such as in Google classifieds. When a user searches for a specific item or a product on the Googles search engine, they would get the EBay Classifieds on the top of the results and if the user is interested in the specific ad, He can follow the link in to the EBay page with access to information on the specific item. And in there, the customer should be able see the instructions as in how to purchase/order the item or place a bid on the item if he/shes interested. The Product that is advertised in the classifieds will be decided on the words the user used to search on the Google Search Engine. For an Example if the user Searched for 2 GB Pen Drive Price Google will have a classified from EBay Showing a post on EBay selling a 2GB pen drive and the post with the lowest starting bid or price will be shown in the ad as The starting price this method will be used to advertise any other items in EBay on Google and on other popular Search Engines. But this strategy is not meant for customers with a more general requirement. Therefore we have to promote customer based marketing strategies.

Following Customer-Based Marketing Strategies The EBay home page should be designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of customer types. Some of the customer types that we can expect are, Teenage Boys and Girls looking for digital hardware like Pen Drives, Hard Disks, Web cams and Mobile Phones and accessories. Teenage Boys and Businessmen looking for accessories such as Watches, Ties and Bracelets and other Fashion Accessories. Teenage Girls looking for Jewelries like Necklets, Bracelets and other Fashion Accessories. Children looking for Gaming Devices and games such as PS3, X-Box and relative games. Sporting goods used by people who play outdoor games. Kids Toys and Hobby related items. Collectibles, Antiques and Arts collected by collectors and other people. People that look for vehicles.

These are some of the types that we can expect and cater for. The Home page should have a section directing these people according to their appropriate interest. We can do that by further identifying and categorizing the needs of the above types. And the main categories we can identify from the above types of customers are, Electronics Fashion Accessories Jewelries and Watches Sporting Goods Collectibles and Arts Local Classifieds Toys and Hobbies

Task 7 Customer Trust is a vital aspect that any company should try and protect when they communicate and do business with the outer world. If the customer trust is broken in any way its considered as damage to the company name. EBay is an online website that deals with a lot of used items and other items that are sold by individuals who are not working for EBay, So when dealing with items like that, there can be some items that are with defects. If a User gets an item that is defected and he was not made aware of it, it can break the trust and lose that user as a customer, So EBay should look to it that the user who lists an item on EBay is explaining the item in detail and is precise, And if an item is sold and defected and it was not mentioned in the Item Details, The User who sold the item should be ready to refund the item. What is a trademark? A trademark is a name or logo used by a company to identify its goods or services. For example, eBay is the name of our company, but it is also a trademark used on our site and on various eBay products. Coca Cola is a trademark used in the sale of soft drinks. Many trademarks are registered, but a trademark need not be registered for an owner to protect it. Trademark laws are primarily designed to protect consumers from confusing one company's goods or services with those of another. What is trademark infringement? Trademark infringement usually involves using someone's trademark on a good or service in a way that may confuse others about the source or affiliation of the goods or services. For example, if a seller unauthorized by or unaffiliated with Nike sells sports clothes called "Nikestuff," the seller is probably infringing Nikes trademark. There are other ways to infringe a trademark, including registering domain names that are substantially similar to the name of a trademark owner. Domain names and trademark infringement A domain name is an address that is used for identifying and locating computers on the Internet (for example, www.ebay.com and www.ebaymotors.com). Many companies register domain names that contain their trademarks. For example, eBay owns www.ebay.com. The Coca Cola Company owns www.cocacola.com and www.coke.com. Read more information on eBay domain names. If a person operates a website using a domain name that contains someone else's trademark (for example, "www.nikestuff.com"), people who see or visit that domain name are likely to be confused and believe that the site is affiliated with Nike when it is not. People may also mistakenly go to this website thinking it's connected with the other company, only to find out that it is not. Intentional misspellings of and similarities to trademarked names (for example, www.wwwebay.com, www.amizon.com) may also be considered trademark infringements. Just because a company hasn't registered all variations of its name or trademark as domain names doesn't mean that others can use those domain names. If the domain names are likely to confuse consumers, they're probably infringing.

IDM City Campus #3, IDM Nations Campus Division (All rights reserved)

35 | P a g e

Cybersquatting and trademark infringement In 1999, the United States Congress passed the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, which generally prohibits using a domain name containing another's trademark with an intent to profit. That law allows penalties of up to $100,000 per domain name abuse incident; anyone who in bad faith uses, sells, or tries to sell a domain name that infringes another's trademark may be fined. Offering to sell a domain name may be used to establish "bad faith" and could expose you to serious liability. This new law may cover domains containing people's names if those names are considered trademarks (for example, www.jacknicklaus.com). The use of a domain containing another's trademark also may violate pre-existing trademark law. References - http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/trademark.html Being a well-known online site which deals with physical goods eBay should have proper system to protect its name and other entitles connected to it. And there steps taken to make this happen and they are covered by eBays guidelines on using eBays Intellectual Property. You are allowed to: Referring to eBay in a descriptive way on your website, in listings, or in advertisements. For example, you can say, "Check out my antique items on eBay" or "I sell on eBay." Using eBays special eBay banner on your own website to earn money through the eBay Partner Network. If you have your own website, you can eBays buttons to link visitors to your eBay Store or your listings. You are not allowed to (Unless you have written permission from eBay) use of the eBay name, logo, or screenshots:

Promotional materials (for example, business cards, flyers, mailing labels, or store windows) Websites In your listing On merchandise (homemade or otherwise), including, but not limited to: o Apparel o Toys o Office supplies & desk accessories (for example, mousepads, signage, or mugs) Referring to eBay in a way that could lead someone to believe that you are sponsored by, affiliated with, or endorsed by eBay. Registering or selling Internet domain names containing "eBay." Framing or changing how the eBay website is viewed. This includes causing third-party content to appear above or around the eBay website.

eBay domain names eBay owns exclusive trademark rights in the eBay name in the U.S. and internationally. We don't allow the registration, ownership, use, or sale of a domain name containing "eBay." eBay listings attempting to sell these domain names will be removed from the site. While it is very popular to register, use, and sell domain names (including on eBay), you generally aren't allowed to own, sell, or use a domain name that contains a trademark owned by another person or company References - http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/everyone-ebayipuse.html The Risks buyers and Sellers Face when dealing through eBay Problems with Buyers Difficult customers exist everywhere, and on eBay matters are a bit different. EBay customers can't inspect goods before purchasing, yet the range of goods to be found on eBay (new, used, top quality, discount import quality, recent, vintage, complete, parted out, etc.) means that customers don't know what to expect from eBay goods in the same way that they do from items at a big box retail store. At the same time, customers' certainty that they're about to get a fabulous deal, the distances that are often involved between buyer and seller, and the fact that buyers can publicly leave negative feedback or poor detailed seller ratings that can sink your business all make eBay retail particularly susceptible to the "problem buyers" problem Poor shipper performance As a "mail order" business in the most basic sense, eBay selling relies heavily on shipping carriers like USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and others for the success of its sellers and the satisfaction of its buyers. Unfortunately, as we all know, shippers are a third party in this game, their performance often beyond the control of both buyers and sellers. Transacting and shipping promptly when a listing closes can help to mitigate things like weather delays, traffic delays, absentee deliveries, natural disasters, strikes, and other things over which shippers have no control, while packing carefully, using great packing materials, considering shipping insurance, and taking care to use a shipment method that provides package tracking can help to limit shipper damage and/or its effects on the seller-customer relationship.

Task 8 The Main Phases of a Business As a business eBay has gone through 4 Main Phases and is still in the business cycle. And they are

Prosperity Phase Recession Phase Depression Phase Recovery Phase

The four phases of business cycles are shown in the following diagram:

The business cycle starts from a trough (lower point) and passes through a recovery phase followed by a period of expansion (upper turning point) and prosperity. After the peak point is reached there is a declining phase of recession followed by a depression. Again the business cycle continues similarly with ups and downs. 1. Prosperity Phase When there is an expansion of output, income, employment, prices and profits, there is also a rise in the standard of living. This period is termed as Prosperity phase.

The features of prosperity are:1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. High level of output and trade. High level of effective demand. High level of income and employment. Rising interest rates. Inflation. Large expansion of bank credit. Overall business optimism. A high level of MEC (Marginal efficiency of capital) and investment.

38 | P a g e

Due to full employment of resources, the level of production is Maximum and there is a rise in GNP (Gross National Product). Due to a high level of economic activity, it causes a rise in prices and profits. There is an upswing in the economic activity and economy reaches its Peak. This is also called as a Boom Period. 2. Recession Phase The turning point from prosperity to depression is termed as Recession Phase. During a recession period, the economic activities slow down. When demand starts falling, the overproduction and future investment plans are also given up. There is a steady decline in the output, income, employment, prices and profits. The businessmen lose confidence and become pessimistic (Negative). It reduces investment. The banks and the people try to get greater liquidity, so credit also contracts. Expansion of business stops, stock market falls. Orders are cancelled and people start losing their jobs. The increase in unemployment causes a sharp decline in income and aggregate demand. Generally, recession lasts for a short period. 3. Depression Phase When there is a continuous decrease of output, income, employment, prices and profits, there is a fall in the standard of living and depression sets in. The features of depression are:1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Fall in volume of output and trade. Fall in income and rise in unemployment. Decline in consumption and demand. Fall in interest rate. Deflation. Contraction of bank credit. Overall business pessimism. Fall in MEC (Marginal efficiency of capital) and investment.

In depression, there is under-utilization of resources and fall in GNP (Gross National Product). The aggregate economic activity is at the lowest, causing a decline in prices and profits until the economy reaches its Trough (low point). 4. Recovery Phase The turning point from depression to expansion is termed as Recovery or Revival Phase. During the period of revival or recovery, there are expansions and rise in economic activities. When demand starts rising, production increases and this causes an increase in investment. There is a steady rise in output, income, employment, prices and profits. The businessmen gain confidence and become optimistic (Positive). This increases investments. The stimulation of investment brings about the revival or recovery of the economy. The banks expand credit, business expansion takes place and stock markets are activated. There is an increase in employment, production, income and aggregate demand, prices and profits start rising, and business expands. Revival slowly emerges into prosperity, and the business cycle is repeated. Thus we see that, during the expansionary or prosperity phase, there is inflation and during the contraction or depression phase, there is a deflation.

The Application of m-commerce to eBay Newer smart phones that are being used in the business world are capable of performing almost all the tasks that would require a Desktop Computer to perform. And a lot of people who used to carry a Laptop in a Bag now refer to carrying handheld smart devices such as Tablets and Smartphones. With access to Wi-Fi facility, most the Smart phones and Tablets can view and perform tasks on the World Wide Web. With all the facilities people are being provided with they consider finding and using a computer to order an item or a good being bothering. And because of that people are using their handheld device to order the items they desire through simple procedures online. Knowing this eBay is implementing and developing on the Mobile communication features of the website. People can use their mobile Credit to buy an item on eBay and it would be billed in the Telecommunication Bill by their service provider. An Article about eBay using M-Commerce EBay VP Says M-Commerce Has Arrived By: Matt Twomey CNBC.com Writer/Producer Don't look now e-commerce, but m-commerce has arrived. So says EBay's vice president of mobile Steve Yankovich, who told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" that the Thanksgiving weekend kickoff of this shopping season saw more than double the transactions on the company's mobile platform than last year. "Mobile growth has been phenomenal," said Yankovich. "Think of only four years back no one thought about mobile at all. Now we expect to do $10 billion globally on eBay Mobile." As mobile devices become increasingly ubiquitous smartphone shipments are expected to be up 45 percent compared with last year, reaching 718 million new units globally, according to IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker for many, they are the go-to vehicle for shopping. The key, said Yankovich, is convenience. "It's not on the retailer's time, it's not on the e-commerce site's time when [consumers] are at a computer," he said. "It's when does it matter to you, and when do you have moments to act on impulse." Yankovich said there's everything from small-value trinkets to six-figure cars being bought and sold on eBay Mobile every day. EBay's stock has lately been riding high, reaching levels not seen since early 2005. It closed Friday at $51.74, up 75 percent from a year ago. The online auctioneer also got a boost from its PayPal unit, which reported mobile payment volume rose 190 percent on Cyber Monday. References - http://www.cnbc.com/id/100287164/EBay_VP_Says_MCommerce_Has_Arrived For the future of eBay I suggest that they should use the new technologies, catching up to them and adjust to them. And they already seem to be doing that.

Task 9 What are web languages? The web as we know is built upon several different languages, building blocks of all websites are two fundamental languages which are HTML and CSS. However, when we want to add interactivity, calculation, authentication, animation etc. we would need to take the help of some other web languages. These are: JavaScript PHP, ASP, CGI, Perl etc. XML Java JavaScript JavaScript should not be confused with Java; JavaScript is a web language which is responsible for almost all activity you see on a web page. For example if you see a smoothly scrolling line of text, or an image which changes when you move your mouse over it, or simple animation, it is probably done using JavaScript. Also note that this language mainly runs on your visitors computer and not on web server. PHP/ASP/CGI/PERL These are called server side languages. They run primarily on a web server and are used to build complex applications. Competitive benefits has to do among a corporation's aptitude to outdo contestants, either by convalescing upon what competitors are presently doing or by doing something totally distinct in a way that shows successful. Being able to execute an e-commerce chart that ameliorates sales or cuts amounts might give one retailer a competitive benefit over another. At the similar time, being the initial to come up among a new e-commerce commercial model, or an irreplaceable twist on an current model, might also allocate an up-start to gain an formerly competitive benefits. According to Dena Waggoner, in the Encyclopedia of Management, "The sturdiest competitive benefit is a plan that cannot be imitated by other corporations. Competitive benefits can also be appearance as any functions that create excellent value above its rivals." As a vendor if you are turning to auction off a utilized electronic instrument, ebay is the best place to do it.

A major specimen of an upstart acquisition an at first competitive advantage by being first-to-marketplace among a new commercial model is eBay.com, the globe's biggest online auction site, among more than 22 million listed customers and roughly 8,000 product categories. Although competitive like Yahoo! and Amazon.com endeavor to gain marketplace share from eBay by launching their own conventional auction sites, eBay's aptitude to gain essential mass gave it the rival edge it desirable to stave off its rivals. Regardless Amazon's attempt to bait patrons with certifications of product standards and Yahoo!'s offering of commission-free sales, eBay gravitation more vendors than any other auction site easily because it had the most purchasers. In my knowledge, Commencing among resemblances, both eBay and Amazon accusation their vendors a listing and ending value cost. The listing cost, from both sale sites, is non- repayment even if the product does not vend. However, an unsold product may be relisted free at both Amazon and eBay sale sites. Amazon sale collection their sellers a $.10 listing cost among the opportunity of having all listing payments relinquished if the vender signed up for a Pro commercial contribution. Where listing payments are concerned among eBay, the minimum cost is $0.25 for a beginning bid of $.01 to $0.99. If an eBay vendor opens an eBay Stock, listing payments may be as low as $.05 each. An unfortunate perceive of online sale commerce, but an attendance nonetheless, is an undone deal. This generally happens when a purchaser fails to send fee. In this instance, both eBay and Amazon sales will reimbursement the ending value cost for that distinctive sale, which base on the last bid quantity. Both sale sites also offer vendor tips and a bulk loader procedure, which allocates the vendor to upload a number of sales all at once. One of the highest variances that stand out among these online sale powerhouses is their procedure on poor vendor functions. In accordance Amazon's site, the corporation reserves the correct to charge vendors payments for poor vendor functions. The quantity of this payment is not stated and, therefore, vendors have no path to identify how much this remuneration may be. In accordance to Amazon sales, causes for this payment may comprises undue reimbursements, high rates of A-Z Assured rights filed in contradiction of the vendor and/or credit card chargebacks associated to Amazon sales payments. In accordance to Amazon sales, they will communicate some expenses to the vendors before assessing them. Instead, an eBay auction has a completely several approach to vendor function. Their 'Item Not Accepted ' grievance process was lately alters to a 'Fraud Alert' scheme, which allocates purchasers to file a grievance among eBay if they do not obtain their merchandise or if it is not as touts. Much like the non-paying bidder grievance process, the vendor has a chance to answer to any grievance and communicate among the purchaser in order to resolution the controversy. If an amicable resolve cannot be arrived, the consumer may close the grievance and demand a refund under eBay's Buyer Protection strategy. In order for an item to qualify, it must be price at a minimum of $25.00 (without shipping & handling).
