Beowulf is the oldest surviving manuscript in British literature has a message that is as relevant today as it was in the 10th century. This is an example of an epic poem, if not THE example of a great epic poem. Now based on what you have watched, what would your definition of an epic poem be? Very good! You have an idea of what we will discuss today. Could someone please read the definition? Yes? Thank you. Now an epic, as what you have said earlier, is a poem, a long narrative poem. It may not have a rhyme. It would be almost like prose. A particular trait of this poem would be the hero or the protagonist of our story. Understood? So these epic poems concern eternal human problems such as the conflict between GOOD and EVIL and are written or told on a grand scale and often in ceremonial style. Why do you think it is written like so? Wow! Thank you for that answer. It may also be because of the culture and the language of the poet Students Activity Maam! Great!

Epic, Maam...big?
Maam can it be massive?

Important,Maam!

Yes, Maam! Beowulf!

Maam, its about adventures and battles of a hero, and told in a poetic form.

An epic is a long narrative poem that relates the great deeds of a largerthan-life hero who embodies the values of a particular society.

[SHOWS BULLET 1] The hero is described as someone who has a strong stature, who has [SHOWS BULELT 2] unbelievable strength and acts and valour. Remember Beowulfs adventures and how he fought monsters and has great adventures?

It is about the culture and tradition in the past, Maam. Maam, I think that it depends upon the one telling the story. They might add or subtract ideas about the thing they are talking about. Folk epics are oral compositions passed on from storyteller to storyteller and has changed over time.
