Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Building Engineering (Structural and Geotechnical Engineering) (Full-time) () Award Title:

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Building Engineering (Structural and Geotechnical Engineering) () UGC Funded Maximum Period of Study: 6 years

Number of credit units required for the Award: 102

Programme Aims:

The programme aims to provide the students with an environment in which to develop their intellectual, analytical and critical abilities, and to enable the graduates to be competent, skilled, reflective new members of building engineering profession; with well developed discipline knowledge who will communicate effectively; contribute through team and individual application of skills and knowledge to resolving problems; with a commitment to lifelong learning; and leadership in the building and construction professions. The programme also aims to provide a basis for continuing professional development, and encouragement for professional specialization or higher academic study. In addition, the programme aims to provide a suitable foundation for the educational development, within an academic environment, in order that students may reach their maximum potential. This foundation is achieved by attaining a balance between the intellectual, professional and the practical constituent elements; fostering an attitude of enquiry, confidence and professionalism; enhancing proficiency in communication and cultivating cultural sensitivity. Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs): Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to: Programme of Study:

1. apply knowledge of mathematics and applied science to solve structural and

geotechnical engineering problems;

2. design and conduct structural and geotechnical related experiments, as well as to

analyze and interpret data;

3. practice as a competent engineer in compliance with managerial, social and ethical

responsibility;

4. communicate effectively by means of drawings and oral and written presentations; 5. function on multi-disciplinary teams in the building and construction industry; 6. design a structural system (e.g., buildings) and its components with the consideration 7. 8.
of the geotechnical restraints and other constraints, such as economic, environmental, health and safety, and sustainability; recognize the need for, and to engage in life-long learning, and stay abreast of contemporary issues; use the computer/IT tools, techniques and modern engineering methods in structural and geotechnical analysis and design along with an understanding of their processes and limitations.

Students who are not required to take the EEC should take 2 courses from the approved list of Courses Fulfilling University Language Requirements for Bachelor's Degree students. 3. Out-of-Discipline (9 credit units) Block credit transfer of 9 credits of OOD to CityU ASc Degree holders admitted through SAS. (NOT applicable to Law Minor Students.)

Starting from the 2008 intake, students must take at least 3 credit units from the General Education (GE) courses in fulfilment of the Out-of-Discipline (OOD) requirement and this will be applicable to senior year entrants admitted from 2009/2010 who have not been granted any credit transfer for OOD. However, students taking a Minor to fulfil the OOD requirement will not be required to take an addition of 3 credit units from the GE courses.

6. Additional Notes For BC courses set with pre-cursor(s), BC Department requires that all students must have attempted (including class attendance, coursework submission and examination) the precursor course(s) so identified. Where BC courses are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination, students must attain the minimum pass grade in both coursework and examination in order to pass the courses as a whole.

The teaching schedules of some BC courses offered in Summer Term may start a few weeks earlier than the normal University schedule; students are advised to check the teaching schedules with the Course Examiners before registering for the courses.

If the number of electives taken by students out of the same prescribed elective group exceeds the programme requirement, results of all these electives taken by the students will be counted towards their GGPAs.
