The purpose of this assignment is to:


Study the Contemporary dance style with particular focus on the Horton and Limon technique. You are to learn and perform set exercises and a Set Study that embodies the two techniques. These will be performed in the class assessment. You are also expected to research contemporary choreographers and assess their contribution to the contemporary dance technique. This assignment will develop the following higher skills: synthesis of a range of concepts, knowledge and skills relating to the performing arts application of complex theories to practical realistic work situations in the performing arts independence of approach to study and the generation of performing arts Scenario: You are a professional dancer attending an audition for a dance company that specialises in the Horton technique and Limon technique. All company members take part in communal, non-commercial activities aimed at developing their teaching skills during a summer schools for children aged from 12-14. Consequently at the audition you will be expected to demonstrate your understanding of different stylistic qualities of choreographers. The company therefore require all auditionees to submit a presentation on a practitioner of their choice. To answer this section you must produce a 10 minute presentation that answers the following statement, Critically analyse a practitioner of your choice considering their influences, style and their contribution to Contemporary dance You must look at least two choreographic works of your choice of practitioner. You must discuss: background and training choreographic influences and style (Exemplifying this through their choreographic works) Context within the development of contemporary dance Analysis of a specific work, evaluating the essential features of their choreography. TASK 2 - LEARNING OUTCOME 2; Be able to develop contemporary dance technique The students contemporary technique will be developed through predominately tutor led technique sessions with student input

and contribution. I will be assessing the students on their physical and interpretative skills. As well as their ability to apply constructive feedback and direction from the tutor and their peers. Students will be expected to track their technical development through regular diary entries that checks their progress of set targets. TASK 3 - LEARNING OUTCOME 3 ; Be able to perform repertoire to exemplify the styles and techniques of key practitioners During lesson the students must learn a dance that will be in the style of Jose Limon. You will explore key concepts of the Limon technique such as: -Use of breath and its effect on the human body - the dynamic of movement in fall and recovery - Fluidity from one movement to another In performance I will be looking for you to perform the dance piece accurately showing the correct style and feel of the dance piece. You will need to remain focussed and engaged in the piece throughout and be committed to each performance. In order to fully grasp the style students must research Limon and watch YouTube clips of Limon technique classes and dance performances. TASK 4 - LEARNING OUTCOME 4; Be able to evaluate own training and performance Throughout the sessions the students will be given verbal feedback from their tutor and peers. The feedback given will be aimed at how the students can improve their training and how this will affect their performance. I will be assessing the students on the ability to self-assess their own work and their ability to put realistic targets in place that will aid the development of your technique. I will be expecting you to take on board all comments and work to improve on your contemporary dance skills throughout the process. Students will be expected to track their technical development through regular diary entries that checks their progress of set targets.
