HART Communications an Introduction

Overview
HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) communications protocol is a standard for communication between a control system and intelligent field instruments. HART is a registered trademark of the HART Communications Foundation. The HART communication interface was developed as a means to get additional information from 4-20 ma field devices without requiring additional wiring. A Frequency Shift Keyed (FSK) signal is super imposed on top of the 4-20 ma signal allowing both the control current and higher-level communications to share the same pair of wires. Technology improvements allowed the transducers to maintain more and more information such as maintenance data or environmental conditions. This data is now readily available to the users with the advent of the HART interface. Metso Automation has two families of I/O that support the HART interface: maxPAC and MIO. The maxPAC I/O family is used with the 4E and 4F model DPU. The MIO family is used with the ACN model of DPU beginning with version 5.0. The maxPAC I/O cards that support the HART interface are: Analog Input Card has the ability to receive 4-20 ma field signals, as well as, HART Communications on each channel. Analog Output Card has the ability to drive 4-20 ma field signals, as well as, HART Communications on each channel. Transceiver Card performs HART Communications on each channel. The eight channels on this card can be connected in any order to various 4-20 ma field signals that are connected to a HART field device.

Refer to the maxPAC Hardware Reference Guide 278596 for more detail of the hardware interface and interconnection. The MIO I/O cards that support the HART interface are: The AII4H Analog Input Card has the ability to receive 4-20 ma field signals, as well as, HART Communications on each of 4 channels.

The AOI4H Analog Output Card has the ability to drive 4-20 ma field signals, as well as, HART Communications on each of 4 channels.

Refer to the separate documentation for MIO hardware installation.

Configuring a maxPACT HART Analog Output or Input Card

The following block diagram shows the use of a maxPACT family HART Analog Output or Analog Input card. Notice that the card address for the FB Buffer and the Analog Output or Analog Input Buffer must be the same, since they communicate with the same card. The channel indexing ranges from 1 to 8, or 1-16, dependent on the capacity of the I/O card. Details about the HART Configuration can be found in the chapter titled HART Standard Library.

The maxPACT HART Transceiver card allows connection to any eight 4-20 ma HART interfaces. These channels can be connected in any order and can be used in conjunction with various other I/O cards. The following block diagram shows a typical configuration using AI and AO cards that do not contain a HART interface. Notice that the address of the FB Buffer must match the transceiver card and that address must be different than any other card connected to the same DPU. Details about the HART Configuration can be found in the chapter titled HART Standard Library.

The following block diagram shows the use of an MIO family HART Analog Output or Analog Input card. In this case the MHB4 buffer takes the place of the FB buffer used in maxPAC. Notice that the card position for the MHB4 Buffer and the Analog Output or Analog Input Buffer must be the same, since they communicate with the same card of matching position in an IBC group. Also note that MIO channel indexing ranges from 0 to 7. Details about the HART Configuration can be found in the chapter titled HART Standard Library.
