Subject: 12-2: Time to the Minute

PA Common Core Standards: CC.2.4.3.A.2 Tell and write time to the nearest minute and solve problems by calculating time intervals. I. Performance Objectives: The students will be able to tell and write time to the nearest minute by participating in three centers throughout the time period. II. Instructional Materials A. Pearson Success Net: 12-2 Time to the Minute B. Student-made clocks C. Hula Hoop D. Hula hoop clock (resources) E. Paint sticks minute and hour hand (resources) F. Schedule clock (resources) G. Smart Board III. Subject Matter/Content A. Prerequisite Skills a. Telling time to the 5-minute, 15 minute, half hour and hour interval B. Key Vocabulary a. Second: smallest unit of time b. Minute: 60 seconds c. Hour: 60 minutes

C. Big Idea: Time can be expressed using different units that are related to each other. IV. Implementation A. Introduction a. How long does a minute last? b. Cover up the clock, and ask students to guess how long a minute lasts by sitting down. B. Development a. Create dashes on student clock. b. Dashes will be in between each number to represent a minute of time. c. Use one minute, three minute, and five minute bag to practice time to the minute. Encourage students to try the five minute bag now that they are capable of visually representing time to the minute.

d. Every minute is important throughout the school day, especially a minute extra of math class or recess! e. Going through the schedule, pick out the different subjects and their corresponding math times. Ask students to draw on Schedule clocks their accurate time. 1. Display on board.

f. Today, we will be participating in centers to practice different times. g. The first center is the hula hoop center. 1. Using the one minute, three minute, and five minute bag, the students will place accurate times on the giant hula hoop clock. 2. One expert time student will be placed in each Hula hoop group as a mini-teacher.

h. The second center is the technology center. Students will practice time on the SmartBoard using the game:

The third center is small group instruction. 1. Using student made clocks, the teacher will begin review of times from the one minute, three minute, and five minute bag. Students will switch centers two times.

C. Closure a. Students will play one minute, three minute, and five minute game to review. b. If students are able to answer times correctly, fill in the clock. D. Accommodations/Differentiation a. One expert time student will be placed in each Hula hoop group as a mini-teacher.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan 1. Formative: - Anecdotal notes (with a focus on five students) during small group instruction - Label: B for beginner, D for developing, or M for mastery - Completion of clock with minute markings (see rubric) 2. Summative: There is no summative for this lesson.
