objective : At the end of the lab session, student should be able to: 1.

Build a straight-through cable to T568-B (or T568-A) standards connection from workstation to hub/switch. 2. Build a crossover cable to T568-B (or T568-A) standards connection from workstation to workstation or hub/switch to hub/switch. Equipment: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. CAT 5 UTP (0.5-1 meter each group) Cutter RJ45 (8pin) connector RJ45 Crimping Tool Ethernet/RJ45 Continuity Tester

Instruction: 1. Get the CAT 5 UTP cable each group. (2 student for 1 group). 2. Cut the jacket at both side of cable so that only the twisted wire left. 3. Straighten the cable accordimg pair. 4. Arrange the wire of cable according to the table below for straight-through cable (normally use T568-B). 5. For straigh-through cable, both ends of cable must use T568-A or T568-B arrangement. T568-B Arrangement PIN 1 2 3 3 5 6 7 8 COLOUR White/orange Orange White/green Blue White/blue Green White/brown Brown T568-A Arrangement PIN 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 COLOUR White/green Green White/orange Blue White/blue Orange White/brown Brown

6. Make sure the arrangement is correct and then insert the wire to the RJ45 and crimp it by using crimping tool. 7. Test the cables by using the Ehernet/RJ45 cabling continuity tester. 8. Observe and write down the result. 9. Repeat step 1-7 for crossover. For crossover cable both ends of cables must use different arrangement (T568-A and T568-B).

Questions a. State the characteristics of UTP cable?

Cat1 UTP cable is specified according to Electronic Industries Association/Telecommunications Industries Association (EIA/TIA) to fit into five categories each with its own specifications. Category one is used for traditional phone lines. It carries only voice communication. Cat2 Cat2 is capable of carrying data but only at rates up to 4 Mb/second. Cat2 cables consist of four twisted pairs. Cat3 Cat3 contains four twisted pairs at a rate of three twists per foot. Data transmission speeds are up to 10Mb/second. Cat4 Faster data transmission requires higher quality materials, so Cat4 cables consist of four twisted pairs of copper wire. Cat4 is capable of speeds up to 16Mb/second. Cat5 Cat5 is by far the most prevalent cabling used in commercial as well as residential applications. It contains four twisted copper pairs and maxes out at 100Mb/second. Cat5e Cat5e was developed to handle speeds up to 1000Mb/second (1Gb/second). There are some Cat5e cables rated at just 100MHz that will struggle to reach that speed, so a cable rated for 35MHz are a better choice. Cat5e is susceptible to less interference than Cat5 more appropriate for running behind the walls. b.What is the function of RJ45 connector?
The "RJ45" (actually 8P8C) connectors used on networking leads appear very similar to but are incompatible with real RJ45 connectors. Another common error is to assume 100Base-TX is all there is: ethernet does not have a "standard" connector. Try as I might I can't find an 8P8C jack on the 10Base2, 10Gbase-SR or indeed wifi cards I have here even though all of them are ethernet.

c.Give the difference between staraight-through connection and crossover connection.

Straight-Through Wired Cables

Straight-Through refers to cables that have the pin assignments on each end of the cable. In other words Pin 1 connector A goes to Pin 1 on connector B, Pin 2 to Pin 2 ect. Straight-Through wired cables are most commonly used to connect a host to client. When we talk about cat5e patch cables,

the Straight-Through wired cat5e patch cable is used to connect computers, printers and other network client devices to the router switch or hub (the host device in this instance).
