What Is Windows?
Microsoft windows is a software tool that allows you to perform many of the tasks you need your computer to do in an intuitive, easy to learn, and easy to remember way. Windows is an operating system program that controls, all the parts of your computer. It uses a Graphical User Interface (GUI . !he kind of interface displays graphical ob"ect called icons, which represent the item you use. !he icons are buttons that when #pushed$ activate the item. %ll programs that uses the windows operating system have a common user interface that makes it easy to learn and use different program that run under Windows. % common user interface means that programs have common features, such as the same menu commands. &or e'ample, you will find the command to open a file is the same command all Windows applications.

!he Windows operating system gets its name from its use of rectangular bo'es called Windows that are used to display information and other programs. Multiple windows can be open at the same time, making it easy to move from one task to another.

Different Types of Windows

!here are two different types of windows( ) %pplication Windows * +ocument Windows 1) Appli ation Windows! " !he main window for an application, which contains the application,s menu bar and work area. %n application window may contain multiple document windows. #) Do $%ent Windows! " % window inside an application window. -ach document window contains a single document or other data file. In some application there can be more than one document window inside an application window.

Graphical User Interfaces or GUIs have been becoming an increasingly significant feature of modern computing. !he concept arose primarily at the .alo %lto /esearch 0enter (.%/0 of the 1ero' 0orporation, but its commercial use was first made at %pple 0orporation. When the %pple Macintosh first develops )234, its uni5ue feature was its graphical interfaces its only means of interaction with the operator or end user. !he computer understands only binary numbers (6,s and ),s a user is unable to directly #talk$ to the computer. &ortunately, the above situation can be overcome by having an interpreter. %n interpreter is a person who can speak or understand both the languages7 in this case each person speaks to the interpreter in turn #interprets # to another language. -ven 8 computer has an interpreter7 we have earlier seen that one of the functions of the operating system is to provide a user interface. !he operating system provides this interface by #interpreting$ the command typed by the user on the keyboard. % typical commands type by the user is parsed by interpreter and translated into a low9level system call, which is then e'ecuted by the hardware. !he hierarchy of a typical computer system is graphically depicted below. " %ny interface between the user and the command processor that allows the user to enter commands from the keyboard for e'ecution by the operating system. '-a%ple! " % graphics9based user interface that allows users to select files, programs, or command by pointing to pictorial representations on screen rather than by typing long, comple' commands from command prompt. Co%ponents of a GUI! " !he %pple Macintosh was one of the M%0 computers to offer a GUI for desktop computers. !he M%0 defined the parts we have come to associate with a standard GUI. % .ointing device, typically a mouse. =n9screen menus that can appear or disappear under a Mouse control. Windows that graphically display what the computer is doing. Icons that represent files, directories, programs, dialog bo'es, button, slider, check bo'es and a plethora of other graphical widest that let you tell the computer what to do and how to do it. !hey are some components in GUI( 9 Dialo. Bo-! " % windows that appears temporarily to re5uest or supply information. Many dialog bo'es have options you must select before windows can carry out a command.

)ont! " % graphical representation of an element in windows such as a disk drive, directory, group application, or document. >ou can enlarge an application icon to a window when you want to use the application. !he following table describes the three types of icons. Icon !ype +escription .rogram9item icon /epresents an application you can start from windows. Most program item icon look uni5ue. ?owever, icons for many M@9+=@ based application are identical. % group might contain several M@9+=@ based applications. !he icon label is the only way to distinguish which application the icon represents. %pplication Icon /epresents a program9item icon (an application that was started and then reduced to an icon. Group or +ocument Generally appears along the lower edge of the application window and icon represents a group or document window that was reduced to an icon. !his icon can be moved anywhere within the application windows. /en$! " % list of available commands in an application window. Menu names appear in the menu bar near the top of the window. !he control menu, represented by the control menu bo' at the left end of the title bar, is common all windows applications. >ou open a menu by selecting the menu name. /en$ Bar! " !he hori8ontal bar containing the names of all the application,s menus. It appears below the title bar. 0i-els! " !he smallest graphic unit on the screen. 0oint! 9 !o move the mouse pointer on the screen until it resets on the item you want to select or choose. 0ointer! 9 !he arrow shaped cursor on the screen that follows the movement of a mouse (or other pointing device and indicates which area of the screen will be affected when you press the mouse button. !he pointer may change shape during certain tasks. S roll! 9 !o move through test or graphics cup, down left or right in order to see parts of the file that cannot fit on the screen. Window! " % rectangular area on your screen in which your view an application or document. Most GUI,s consist of three ma"or components. % windowing @ystem %n Imaging Model %n %pplication program Interface (%.I Windowin. Syste%! " !he windowing system is wet of programming tools and commands for building the windows, menus and dialog bo'es that appear on the screen. It controls how windows are created, si8ed, and moved on screen and how the user moves from one window to another.

" !he imaging model defines how fonts and typeface and si8e of the te't in a word processor or +esktop publishing program is specified through the imaging model, so are the lines and curves of a 0%+ program. !he background of your screen, on which window icons, and dialog bo'es appear. Des1top 0attern % design that appears across your desktop. >ou can create your pattern or select patterns provided by windows.

The Tas1 Bar

!he taskbar is the bar on your desktop that includes the start button. Autton representing programs currently running on your computer appear on this bar. !he !askbar is normally across the bottom of your screen. %t the left end of the !askbar is the @tart button. If Windows prompts you to choose an icon, click one, and then click )inish. >ou can also open the Tas12ar 0roperties dialog bo' by right9clicking a blank area on the taskbar , and then clicking 0roperties. >ou can also add a program to the top of the Start menu by dragging the programFs icon to the Start button. 0lick Ad4an ed if you want to add a program by using Windows -'plorer.

The Start B$tton

!he start button is the button on your taskbar that includes the programs. To start a pro.ra% ). 0lick Start, and then point to 0ro.ra%s. *. If the program you want is not on the menu, point to the folder that contains the program. B. 0lick the program name. Notes

%fter you start a program, a button for that program appears on the taskbar. !o switch from one running program to another, click its taskbar button.

If the program you want doesnFt appear on the 0ro.ra%s menu or one of its submenus, click Start, point to )ind, and then click )iles or )olders. Use the )ind dialog bo' to locate the program file.

The Title Bar

In a graphical user interface, a thin hori8ontal bar across the top of a window that contains the name of the window, as well as the control9menu bo' and the minimi8e, ma'imi8e and close buttons. %n application window,s title bar will also contain the name of the file or document you are working on. Control /en$ Bo- B$tton! " !his Autton is in upper9left corner of each window. !he control Menu is most useful if you use your keyboard to move, si8e, and close a window. =r, if the application or document window has been reduced to an icon, click the icon. +o not double click7 if you do, you close the you can also use the keyboard to open the control Menu. Use one of the following key combinations after the window or icon is selected. " !o reduce a window to an icon by using the minimi8e button (at the right of the title bar the minimi8e command on the control menu. /a-i%i5e B$tton! " !he small button containing a s5uare bo' at the right of the title bar. Mouse users can click the ma'imi8e button to enlarge a window to its ma'imum si8e. Heyboard user can use the ma'imi8e command on the control menu. !he /estore button replaces the ma'imi8e button after you enlarge a window. (estore B$tton! " !he small button containing two s5uare bo'es right of the title bar. =ne is visible fully and second is partly visible. Mouse users can click the /estore button to return the window to its previous si8e. Heyboard user can use the restore command on the control menu. /ini%i5e B$tton! " !he small button containing a hyphen (9 at the right of the title bar. Mouse user can click the minimi8e button to reduce a window to an icon. Heyboard users can use the minimi8e command on the control menu. Close B$tton! " !his button is used to close the windows or dialog bo'.

The Control 0anel

0ontrol .anel is a Windows application that provides you with a visual way of modifying your system while working with Windows. %n icon in the 0ontrol .anel Window represents each option that you can change. !hese options include( * >our screen colors. * =ther desktop options that determine the look of your screen. * !he fonts recogni8ed by your Windows applications. * !he printer you use. * Heyboard and pointing I device settings. * International settings. * .ort and network settings. * !he system date and time. * !he sounds your system uses. * MI+I settings for a synthesi8er connected to your computer. When you change an option, it is stored in the WIJ. IJI file so that it will be in effect the ne't time you run Windows. A essi2ility! " @ee Je't .ages Add New &ardware! " !his facilities is used to install hardware devices in windows operating system. To install a 0l$. and 0lay de4i e

). !urn off your computer. *. 0onnect the device to your computer according to the manufacturerFs instructions. B. !urn on your computer and start Windows. Windows will automatically detect the new .lug and .lay device and install the necessary software. Notes

If Windows does not detect a new .lug and .lay device, then the device itself is not working properly, is not installed correctly, or is not installed at all. +o not use the %dd Jew ?ardware wi8ard. !he %dd Jew ?ardware wi8ard cannot solve any of the problems noted here. Wi5ards % wi8ard is a windows feature that asks 5uestions and then uses your answers to
automatically layout and formats a certain type of application. % wi8ard is often the fastest way to run the application.

!he find feature use to find a file, 0omputer on Jetwork and similar fonts. To find a file or folder ). 0lick Start, point to )ind, and then click )iles or )olders. *. In Na%ed, type all or part of the file name. -nter a word or phrase in ontainin. te-t if you do not know the name of a file but know a distinctive word or phrase it contains. If you want to specify the location to start the search, click Browse. B. 0lick )ind Now. Note

If you want the search to be case9sensitive, click the Options menu and make sure a check mark appears ne't to Case Sensiti4e. 0lick to create the check mark7 click again to clear it.

!he right button enables you to 5uickly accomplish common tasks. If you click an item by using the right button, a menu is displayed containing commands specific to the item. .eople who are more comfortable with Windows will find this useful. If you are less comfortable with Windows, you can still use the left button and menus to complete these same tasks.

When you install a printer, the installation program may install several printer fonts. !hese do not appear in the )onts folder, but they do appear in the font list of Windows9based programs, such as Word.ad.
