Generic Name: Mannitol

Mobilizes fluids in the cerebral and ocular spaces (lowers intracranial pressure).

Reduction of ICP

Contraindicated with anuria due to severe renal disease. Use cautiously with pulmonary congestion, active intracranial bleeding (except during craniotomy), dehydration, renal disease, heart failure, pregnancy, lactation.

CNS: dizziness, headache, blurred vision, seizures CV: hypotension, hypertension, edema, HF, thrombophlebitis, tachycardia and chest pain DERMATOLOGIC: urticaria, skin necrosis with infiltration. GI: nausea, anorexia, dry mouth, thirst GU: dieresis and urine retention HEMATOLOGIC: fluid and electrolyte imbalances, hyponatremia RESPIRATORY: pulmonary congestion rhinitis

Observe 12 Rights in drug administration Ensure the patency of the intravenous tubing WARNING: do not give electrolytefree mannitao with blood. If blood must be given, add at least 20 mEq of sodium chloride to each liter of mannitol solution. Make sure infusion set contains a filter if giving concentrated mannitol
