Karate Kids
10Karate is a very popular sport among teenagers in Britain. Today, we go to Dagenham, in East
London, to meet British junior Karate champions Stacy McCarthy and Jonathan Mottram, both
15 years old.
People think that karate is easy, and that after one training session you can be Jean Claude Van
Damme! Its not like that at all. You must start quite young, says Stacy NcCarthy. You must
15be about six or seven if you are going to do the sport seriously. But you mustnt be too young
because there are a lot of difficult moves and young kids cant remember them.
The Karate belt system is long and difficult.Stacy and Jonathan do a style of Karate called
ishinryu. Beginners wear a white belt. After 6 months they can take a test for the next level the
yellow. They must then go through orange, green, blue, red belt and brown belts. After that the
20levels are called dans. When you get your first dan, you get a black belt.
Its a hard life. We usually come to the club three times a week to train, but when were
preparing for a championship we train every evening.
Jonathan says Were very busy with training and theres not a lot of time. But I sometimes go to
the cinema with friends.
25Their sensei, an ex-boxer called Ticky Donovan, is very proud of them. Stacy and Jonathan are
my star pupils. Theyve both got their black belts. Now they are training for their second dan.
