Revised Qualitative Problem Statement

Video is one of the most vital instructional media in the public schools; the usage with other multimedia tools is becoming prevalent in the education system (Lee, 2005). However, the success may not have been as desired because how teachers and students effectively use these instructional tools is directly proportional to the quality, efficacy, and success in the education system (Lee, 2005). Despite students appreciation for these facilities; the apparent disadvantage of these technological options is the interaction level between teachers and students during usage (Ronchetti, 2010).

This qualitative case study will explore the use of multimedia visual aids in teaching and learning science subjects in 25 colleges in Lagos state Nigeria. Data collection for this research will be through participant observation and interviewing. The result of this research will provide teachers and students information on measures to enhance teaching and learning science subjects using technology. The result will also provide government and educational stakeholders information on the usefulness of equipping colleges with modern instructional materials. Revised Qualitative Purpose Statement The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand how teachers and students use video and other multimedia visual aids in teaching and learning science subjects. This research method will help understand the attitude and experience of teachers and students in using video and multimedia visual aid. Pratt (2006) stated that qualitative researcher tends to discover why participants behave the way they do, how they consider situation, and their perspectives on particular issues. This phenomenological design is to be carried out by participant observation and interview. This design methodology is an approach

of exploring peoples everyday life (Haber, 2012). Observing the natural scene such as classroom will ensure access to the same places, people, and events as the subjects (Pratt, 2006). Interviewing the participant will help tap into in depth reality of the situation and gaining understanding of the subject (Pratt, 2006). The principal participants in this research are the teachers and students. Ten science teachers and students will be selected from twenty five colleges in Lagos state.

Qualitative research questions RQ1. How does the use of video and multimedia instructional aid affect teaching and learning science subjects in colleges in Ikeja district, Lagos, Nigeria? RQ2. What effect does teaching and learning using videos and multimedia aid has on science teachers and students in colleges in Lagos state.

Revised Quantitative Problem Statement

Flexible teaching and learning ideology is not a new concept in the educational system; however, the implementation has been a challenge (Goode, Willis, & Wolf, 2007). The significance of information system (IS) is represented in every industrial sector, yet we have neglected the use for creating a more learning friendly environment in the classroom (Goode, Willis, & Wolf, 2007). Learning takes place in a physical environment with quantifiable and perceptible physical characteristics. Whether sitting in a large lecture hall, underneath a tree, or in front of a computer screen, students are engulfed by environmental information (Graetz, 2013, para. 1). Studying in non-conducive learning environment may militate against teaching and learning.

This current quantitative descriptive study will describe the effect of teaching and learning in 15 traditional and modern classrooms respectively in public primary schools in Ikeja district, Lagos state, Nigeria. This research will use questionnaire to identify how the environment affects perception and performance of teachers and students in the classroom. To achieve this purpose data will be collected through the survey and statistically analysed. The result will provide government and educational stakeholders information on creating policies and standards for a conducive teaching and learning environment.

Revised Quantitative Purpose Statement

The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study is to describe the perception and performance of teachers and students in traditional and modern classroom respectively. This research method and design will help determine the effect of the different classroom environment on the participants. Pratt (2006) stated that quantitative research tends to classify structures, enumerate them, and develop statistical models in order to explain the observation.

This research is designed to be carried out by using questionnaire that will be distributed to the participants. The approach will ensure that answers to questions are scored and scores summed to achieve a total measure of the attitudes and opinions of the respondent. The dependent variables for this research are the teachers and students and the independent variables are the different classrooms environments that affected their perception and performance. The research will be carried out by selecting 20 teachers and 15 students in 20 traditional and modern classrooms respectively of 15 public primary schools in Ikeja district, Lagos, Nigeria.

Quantitative research questions

RQ1. To what extent does the teaching and learning in a modern technological classroom and traditional classroom affect performance of teachers and students in primary schools in Ikeja district, Lagos state? H1: Teaching and learning in modern technological classroom ensures better performance of teachers and students than traditional classroom.

RQ2. To what extent does teaching and learning in modern technological classroom and traditional classroom differ in Ikeja district Lagos state? H2: Teaching and learning in modern technological classroom has significant difference with traditional classroom.
