Background: Henchard was born in the slums of LAnguille, one of Bretonnias port towns. He fell into a life of mindless drudgery on the docks as a stevedore, and then a life of crime. While being chased by the authorities he was caught up amongst the entourage of Sir Osric, a Grail Knight of some renown. He used this as a cover to leave the city and spent a year following Osric with other Grail Pilgrims before the knight died of dissentry in a Carcassone war camp. He then flitted to another knight of the Grail, Tristan. While relieving himself one night in the camp latrine Henchard saw an orc sneaking into camp. In the ensuing fight (Henchard was trying to run away, but fell in the latrine) the orc fell on its own sword. It turned out to be the chieftain the Carcassone knights were hunting! This has earned him the note of both Sir Tristan and apparently the Duke of Carcassone! Personality: Henchard maintains a facade of being utterly subservient to Sir Tristan. His lifes dream is to use the Grail Knights reputation to earn himself a life free of toil. This is really the most a peasant could hope for in down-trodden Bretonnia. When his knights back is turned Henchards wheeling and dealing begins. He is a sneaky, suspicious, roguish character with a propensity for trouble. He has no qualms about selling holy artifacts to gullible Grail fanatics and is always looking for a way to make a profit out of any situation.
Grail Pilgrims Grail Pilgrims are peasants devoted to the Lady of the Lake, as represented by her Grail Knights. They believe that Grail Knights are paragons of courage, justice, and courtesy, and that the best way they, as lowly peasants, can serve the Lady is to serve a Grail Knight. To this end, they choose a Grail Knight and follow him around. If the knight drops anything (broken spoons, old buttons, and so on), they seize them and treasure them as relics, a means of contact with the holy. If the Grail Knight needs anything, they get it for him. And if the Grail Knight is in danger, they try to fight for him. Most Grail Pilgrims do not have long lives. If a Grail Knight dies whilst questing, his Grail Pilgrims descend on the body, stripping it of relics. Many then turn the corpse into a Grail Reliquae, which they then carry around in place of the Knight himself Battle Pilgrims are Grail Pilgrims who have survived following their Grail Knight for some time. As a result, they have become competent fighters. In most cases, they have also become even more fervent admirers of their Grail Knight and worshippers of the Lady of the Lake, having seen what the flower of Bretonnian chivalry are truly capable of. Battle Pilgrims are the effective leaders of groups of Grail Pilgrims, as the Grail Knight never condescends to give orders to peasant rabble. Some Grail Pilgrims resent taking orders from someone no better than they, so Battle Pilgrims often have to impose order by force. Wiser Grail Pilgrims note that their chances of survival are greatly increased by doing as the Battle Pilgrims say.
