Notes:
The SolidWorks Enterprise PDM server components can run on workstations running XP, but in a production environment, SolidWorks Corporation requires the use of a server-specific operating system. The minimum requirement is an absolute minimum. SolidWorks Corporation cannot guarantee system performance or behavior for installations running on configurations not meeting the minimum recommended levels. The hard drive requirements are solely dependent on the size of data stored in the system. Therefore, the actual requirements can exceed the values in this recommendation. The recommended configuration is based on a typical installation with approximately 20 users and approximately 60,000 stored documents. Prerequisites for installing any SolidWorks Enterprise PDM component are Windows Installer 3.1,MSXML 6, and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SQL_DMO backwardcompatibility drivers. These are automatically installed when running the SolidWorks Enterprise PDM setup. Client also has a prerequisite of Microsoft .Net 3 Framework. If using an administrative install image for client deployment, these components will not be installed automatically. As the Database Server of SolidWorks Enterprise PDM runs on SQL server, we do not recommend installing any instances of other applications on the database server. Note that client, database and archive server support both 32 and 64 bit operating systems, but web server currently supports 32 bit operating systems only. Starting with SolidWorks Enterprise PDM 2009 the product will only be available on DVDs. Windows 2003 Small Business Server Edition is not supported. Installation is blocked for SolidWorks Workgroup PDM Vault. For information regarding virtual environments and attached storage devices (NAS and SAN), please click here.

Clean Removal
Clean Removal of SolidWorks Products
WHY?
When going from major release to major release CAD MicroSolutions strongly suggest that a full uninstall and re-install is the best way to perform an upgrade for long term performance and stability. This process will clean out the installation files, freeing up space, and provide a fresh write of the files in the Program Files directory. If you simply want to update your Service Pack within a major release, proceed to the Update Section on Page 17. Until very recently, there were no real tools to help cleanly uninstall SolidWorks. For the most part, youll want to be making use of the Uninstall Feature if SolidWorks 2011 has been installed (Page 13 for details). If you have an earlier version of SolidWorks or simply want to be more thorough, follow the instructions for a Manual Uninstall before installing the latest.

Things you will need before you start

Before starting the uninstall and re-install process, there are some things you will need to have. Make sure you have access to the following: Obtain the software. The updates and DVD contents can be downloaded from 1 the SolidWorks Customer Portal (Downloads area). DVD's are shipped when you purchase the software and when major versions 2 are released (Subscription Service Customers). Insure you have Administrative or Power User privileges on the computer. Information (i.e., serial numbers, etc.) available for activation or insure your SNL (SolidWorks Network Licensing) license file and server is configured.

Manual
Note: Most of these steps will require Administrative Privileges on the local system.

Step 1 Backing up Custom files and Toolbox

Be sure to back up all custom files. If youre not sure where you stored your templates, check the SolidWorks > Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations i.e. Toolbox, Templates, Sheet Formats, Design Library, BOM Templates etc. If running Toolbox on your local machine, backup the Toolbox database. C:\SolidWorks Data Also be sure to backup c:\ProgramdData\SolidWorks\SolidWorks{Year} just in case you have stored any template files in there.

Visit https://customerportal.solidworks.com. You will need a valid subscription service contract and a Customer Portal login. 2 DVD are Shipped usually sometime in Late October, Early November. If you havent been getting your DVDs, make sure to give us a call to update the records (416-213-0533). Step 2 Transferring the License back to SolidWorks or the SNL License Server.
Standalone Seat 1. Open SolidWorks 2. Help > Transfer License for all products (ie. SolidWorks, Simulation, Flow etc.) 3. Confirm information and finish the procedure. SolidNetWork Licence Automatic Borrowing: Make sure to close SolidWorks. Manual Borrowing: Return license to server. 1. Go to Start > All Programs > SolidWorks{year} > SolidWorks Tools > SolidNetWork License Administrator 2. Proceed to the License Borrowing Tab 3. Return any borrowed licenses.

Step 3 Uninstall SolidWorks

From the Control Panel, Windows Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Programs and Features (Vista / Win7) Remove all SolidWorks Programs. 1. Remove any add-on products in the list first (MyCADTools, PDM Enterprise, 2D Editor, etc. those that are listed) 2. Remove older versions of SolidWorks (if applicable) 3. Remove current versions of SolidWorks If there are any errors during uninstall, or windows fails to remove the programs, continue with the removal instructions whereby you will be manually deleting any remaining files and folders.

DO NOT DELETE the Toolbox SOLIDWORKS DATA Folder.

In an office environment this folder should be on a server for the Toolbox and Hole Wizard to work properly. This folder needs to be maintained and backed up from release to release. It will be updated during the new install.

Step 4 Deleting the Residual Folders

Using Windows Explorer, delete any and all of the possible residual folders: C:\Program Files\Common files\eDrawings C:\Program Files\Common files\eDrawings<year> C:\Program Files\Common Files\SolidWorks Installation Manager C:\Program Files\Common Files\SolidWorks Shared C:\Program Files\Common Files\SolidWorks C:\Program Files\Common Files\SolidWorks Corp

Installation Notes
Installing SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation
Most importantly, the user on the computer needs to have full local admin rights. Make sure that when you are installing or repairing any SolidWorks product, that the Anti-Virus has been disabled. This is to make sure that all of the SolidWorks software programming code gets installed, and the anti-virus doesn't mistake the program as a virus or a Trojan. OVERALL, insert the DVD or select the setup.exe file. Next choose Individual Installation regardless of what SolidWorks Package or setup you have Next it will ask you to confirm your serial. Enter the serial for any and all products that you have. After that, confirm the installation options, toolbox location and download options.

Vista / Win 7 User Account Control Settings (UACs)

Make sure to turn off the User Account Controls (Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > User Accounts > Change User Account Control Settings) for the user for the duration of the installations.

Installing SolidWorks Side by Side

It is possible to install two separate versions of SolidWorks on one Computer. This may be the case if youre working with a vendor or client that uses an earlier version. This can definitely be done with a few precautions: Step 1. What version(s) of SolidWorks are you wanting to install and what version of Windows and Microsoft Office are you running. You can view the System Requirements on the SolidWorks Website for specifics of what is supported (http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/SystemRequirements.html). Step 2. Create a backup of your current SolidWorks settings using Copy Settings Wizard, this is more of a precaution than necessity just in case something goes wrong with your installation. (Start > All Programs > SolidWorks 20-- > SolidWorks Tools > Copy Settings Wizard) Word of caution: When you save your copy setting wizard in a particular version of SW, it is only good for that version. For example, you dont wa nt to be using a 2010 Copy Settings Wizard in SW 2011. For every version of SW, you will need to redo your customization in order to minimize potential performance problems. Step 3. Who else are you working with? You need to think about working with other engineers in/out of the office and what versions of SolidWorks are they running, remember you can save a 2010 file as 2011 but you cannot save a 2011 file as 2010. Step 4. Installation Location You need to make sure that you specify during the installation process a location that is different and identifiable, if you look at the image, right, you can see that I have a different location for my installations.

Step 5. Toolbox Location During the installation you need to specify that you want to create a new Toolbox vs. upgrading the existing.

Step 6. Template Locations If you have company specific templates stored in a network or on a local drive you will want to create a copy of that folder and rename it specific to the version you are going to use it with.

16

Step 7. SolidWorks System Options Once your installation is complete you will want to run both versions of SolidWorks and check that your File Locations, Default Templates, and Hole Wizard Locations.

Post-Installation Recommendations
File Preparation
Whenever, you open up a Previous Years File in a newer version of SolidWorks, there a slight time lag until the parts are then saved in the current version. Sometimes, current projects with older parts arent properly re-saved and poor system performance can result in the long run. To ensure the best performance from year to year: 1 Create a back-up of all your SolidWorks Files 2 Make use of the SolidWorks Task Schedular, Convert Feature, or the MyCADTools Update Version [Start > All Programs > MyCADTools{year} > Utilities > Update Version.]

Graphics Card Check

It is strongly recommended that when the new version of SolidWorks is installed, that the Graphics Card Driver is also checked to easily avoid any display issues. To do this: Start > All Programs > SolidWorks {year} > SolidWorks Tools > SolidWorks Rx > Diagnostics Tab > Download Latest Driver Button. Alternatively proceed to the following site, and insert the computer specs.
http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/videocardtesting.html

If youre having difficulty with the system spec, try Any System Vendor and then proceed to insert your card info. Once you have the entire file, youll want to go to the Control Panel to uninstall the current Driver. At the end of the uninstall, your computer will likely ask you if you want to re-start your computer Do so. Once your computer has rebooted, go to the downloaded file and double-click it. This will install the file. Finish the installation.

SolidWorks Update Procedure

For a trouble-free SolidWorks update, make sure of the following before downloading and installing the update. Full Administrative Priveleges. Anti-virus has been disabled. Win 7 / Vista Users: That the User Account Control Setting have been properly set. (see page 14) Next, open SolidWorks; Help > check for updates.

If it's not in the list, you can use the "Add" button and manually type in the server name to locate the vault server.

*Depending on the domain of the client, user might need to provide User and Password information that has admin access to the archive. Next, you will tell it which vault on that server you would like to connect to. Check the box next to the desired vault and click Next.

A few more questions... and we are almost there. You need to tell the wizard where you would like to place the local copy of the vault files, and who should be able to see it. *Please note that if you create a folder - it will place the vault icon inside the folder. This is why it is recommended to create the vault at the root of a drive with plenty of space on it. Then the vault icon (or "blueberry" as some call it) will be placed at the root of the drive for easy viewing. You can also restrict this view to yourself or let others see it. (Either way, you have to log in to be able to gain access!) Click Next after making your selections.

Take a quick look to make sure the settings all seem correct on the next screen. Now you should be able to click Finish and the Vault will be created!

23

Click Close to Confirm that the wizard has done its job.

Just to double-check... Open windows explorer and make sure the new vault view is displayed in your list of folders, just as you selected. If you double-click it to access the vault, you will need to log on for the first time. You are then all set with your new vault view!

What you Need to Know when Using Update References to Fix Broken References
File references can be broken when files are renamed, moved, or deleted. Starting with SolidWorks Enterprise PDM 2011, you can use the new Update References command to repair the broken references. It is very important to understand that when you check files in to the vault, if the Check In dialog box displays warnings of missing files, cancel the check in. If you ignore the warnings for missing files and check files in, the Update References wizard does not list the missing files.

We

purchased a new server. How do I move the license manager?

a. On the current server run the SolidNetWork License Manager and choose Modify.

b. Then choose the transfer option. c. Once transfer is successful go to the Installing New SolidWorks SolidNetWork License Managers section of this guide

How do I handle Service Pack Updates?

The client can update his or her installation at any time, regardless of what Service Pack the SNL License Manager is at. See page 17 for details.

I need to install the latest Version of SNL Network Manager, but I have users using older Versions of SolidWorks, how does that work?
This is not a problem regardless of what SolidWorks version the client has installed all the way back to 2005. Just upgrade the server and the test.

Installation / Hardware
What are the latest system requirements? The SolidWorks website has the suggested system requirements here or see Pages 3-8 of this document. Will SolidWorks be able to support XP beyond SolidWorks 2012? Starting in SolidWorks 2013, the XP platform will no longer be supported. As a matter of fact, XP is already 10 years old and Microsoft has already ended their support. What is the best procedure to upgrade my installation of SolidWorks to a new major release of the software? Although the installation manager asks if you would like to upgrade a previous installation, CAD MicroSolutions strongly suggests you completely uninstall SolidWorks before installing the next major release of the software. See page 9 for details. What is the proper procedure to move my SolidWorks installation to my new computer? On the old system, from the help pull down menu in SolidWorks, use Transfer License. This will transfer the activation back on the SolidWorks Server. Then you can install and run SolidWorks on the new system and activate. I have many systems to install SolidWorks onto. What is the best and fastest way to do this? An Administrative Image can be created to aid in installing multiple seats of network and/or standalone seats of the software. Im about to install or update a SolidWorks product, but Im having trouble disabling my anti-virus what do I do? I.T. may have locked this ability out. Please ask them for help. I have a serial number but I cannot find the DVD or the installation files. Login to the Customer Portal (https://customerportal.solidworks.com), go to the Download section, select the desired year, and then download the version of SolidWorks that you want.

How to relocate Toolbox in an office environment to a centralized server location? I. On a clean or new install you will be asked for SolidWorks Data location. This should be directed to a network share using a UNC path (\\server\share\SolidWorks Data\). II. For existing installations where the install was left at the default c:\SolidWorks Data. Move the default directory to a server UNC path then remap this path in the SolidWorks options on the system options tab under Hole Wizard/ Toolbox. Why does the display go black or streaky or freeze? Check that you have an approved video card and the latest tested and supported graphics card driver version is installed. See here. I noticed in the SolidWorks Rx, that my Graphics Card is out of date. What is the proper procedure to install the latest driver? The best method especially with NVIDIA cards, is to open the SolidWorks Rx to download the driver. Start > All Programs > SolidWorks {year} > SolidWorks Tools > SolidWorks Rx > Diagnostics Tab > Download Latest Driver Button. Alternatively proceed to the following site, and insert the computer specs. http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/videocardtesting.html If youre having difficulty with the system spec, try Any System Vendor and then proceed to insert your card info. My Graphics card isnt supported! What can I do if Im experiencing display anomalies? The first thing to try is the Software OpenGL mode. To do this: 1. Close SolidWorks if its open. 2. Start > All Programs > SolidWorks {year} > SolidWorks Tools > SolidWorks Rx > Home Tab 3. Click on Click here to launch SolidWorks in Software OpenGL mode

Alternatively, consider getting the latest Driver from the Manufacturer, or getting a supported card.

How do I transfer my personalized setting (toolbars etc) to another computer? Copy setting wizard can be found at Start > All Programs > SolidWorks {year} > SolidWorks Tools > Copy Settings Wizard. This will create a settings file that can be run on any other system to restore your settings. CAD MicroSolutions does not suggest copying settings between major releases of SolidWorks. Im constantly running into error messages indicating that Im out of system resources, or out of memory. I. Perform system maintenance. This can include procedures such as cleaning the windows temp folder (use SolidWorks Rx System Maintenance tab), performing a defrag, or moving archaic files onto a secondary drive. II. Contact us to see if you should be considering ore memory and/or a 64 Bit system upgrade.

Activations / SNL / License

My SolidWorks wont start. Cant get a license a. Ensure the SolidNetWork License Manager Service is running on the server, and that the service has been started. b. Firewall issue. Ensure that ports 25734 and 25735 are opened on the server. This is very common issue if the license manager has been installed on a Windows XP operating system and not on a Windows Server operating system. Im about to travel for work or work a lot from home, and Im using a SNL Network license, how will I work without being at the office connected to the server? Suggest Manual Borrowing, for up to 30 days. Start > All Programs > SolidWorks {year} > SolidWorks Tools > SolidNetWork License Manager. Under the tab License Borrowing you can choose from the list of license what you would like to borrow and for how long. As of 2011, you do not have to borrow SolidWorks Standard and Professional to get a Pro addin. This now happens automatically when you borrow a Professional License. Beyond that, or if regularly working outside of the office, request a Home Use License (HUL) through your account Manager. Why cant I activate my SolidWorks Software? Its giving me warnings... Generally speaking if you cannot activate your SolidWorks, this means that the serial already has two activations on it, which is the most allowed per serial. An activation will need to be freed up. Three scenarios, see below. If SolidWorks is still on a computer, but is no longer in use (or about to be uninstalled) then transfer the license back to the SolidWorks server. Open up SolidWorks, Help > Transfer License. Alternatively, if SolidWorks has been uninstalled from the computer, and that serial has a valid SolidWorks Subscription, Proceed to the Custom Portal, Download and Updates Section, and download and install the SW Activation Wizard, follow the instructions. Once installed, proceed to Start > All Programs > SolidWorks {year} > SolidWorks Tools > SolidWorks Activation Wizard and use the option Transfer a license. Finally, if none of the above apply, be sure to give us a call to have the activation manually removed. (416-213-0533)

How do we get our 2011 SolidNetWork License file? SolidWorks SolidNetWork Licensing 2010 and newer, has moved to activation based licensing. Once the product has been installed it will activate via the web. All old dongles need to be returned to CAD MicroSolutions for proper disposal.

SolidWorks
How can I save my documents to a previous release of SolidWorks? This is not possible, due to the nature feature based, parametric modellers, SolidWorks does not save to previous versions. The only option is to save the SolidWorks file as a translation file format (IE. Parasolid, STEP, etc) and then import it in the older version of SolidWorks but the feature tree will be lost. What are typical causes of erratic behaviour in SolidWorks? I. II. III. Lack of system maintenance. Clean windows temp folder (use SolidWorks Rx System Maintenance). Using Templates from older SolidWorks Versions. Corrupt registry. Rename HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\solidworks\solidworks{year} folder to solidworks-old this will reset the current user as if they just installed SolidWorks, **NOTE** All toolbar customizations and file path customizations etc. will be lost. Corrupt file. Can be caused by antivirus programs, working without a PDM system, working from a network location, among other potential causes. Possible conflicting user rights in certain locations or in the registry. Installation had become corrupt -- Attempt to run a repair. Hardware Failure, Power issues, Dusty Box.

Where has my eDrawings toolbar gone in SolidWorks? eDrawings is no longer an add-in product. The publish eDrawings button can be found under the save dropdown button or from the file pull down menu. Where do I get more weldment library profiles? How do I add them to the standard library? From the Design Library inside SolidWorks, go to the SolidWorks Content in to the Weldments folder. Ctrl + click the standard library to download a zipped file containing the profiles to a temporary folder. Check the file locations under the SolidWorks System Options to find where your Weldment Profile location has been set. Next, unzip the downloaded file to this folder location.

Why dont my surfaces appear in my drawings? If a file has both solid bodies and surface bodies, by default SolidWorks hides the surface bodies in a drawing view. In the feature tree of the drawing under the drawing view you want to see the surface in select the surface bodies and choose show. Why, when I send my client an assembly file, the file seems empty? All referenced documents need to be sent with the assembly file. The tool to facilitate this is the use of Pack and Go (found in the SolidWorks file pull down and in the SolidWorks Explorer tools). This utility automatically takes all referenced items for a selected document and either copies them to a selected folder or you can also zip and email in one step. How can someone who doesnt have SolidWorks see my files in 3D? eDrawings, is a free downloadable viewer, and is downloaded from the SolidWorks website. http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/downloads.htm
