A Tsunami is a series of waves created by displacement of a large volume of water. It may follow a large earthquake, volcanic eruption, or underwater landslide Causes: http://geology.com/articles/tsunami-geology.shtml The largest and most deadly earthquakes and tsunamis are created at areas called seduction zones where plates forming earth's crust are pulled down into earth's interior nature and types nature http://www.windows2universe.org/earth/images/NOAA_quake_tsunami.jpg typesmap showing distribution of tsunami

case study survivor: Mara Beln Alvrez is a physician, spokesperson, and advocate, known for surviving the 2004
Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami when she was on vacation in Thailand with her husband Enrique and three sons Lucas, Simn, and Toms Beln.

location of the affected area

the towns and villages along the coastlines of the region in southern Asia and as far away as East Africa, including India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Maldives, as well the Seychelles, Tanzania and Somalia among others.

Indian ocean is where the scale of disaster -area and time In the open ocean the tsunami measured less than 1 metre high.
The tsunami travelled at speeds up to 800km per hour. When the Tsunami reached the shores, the height of the wave increased to 15 metres in some areas.

Early in the morning of december 26th,2004 powerful earthquake shook Indonesia, followed by a massive tsunami that was spread across the Indian Ocean. I originated at Sumatra subduction zone.

-length of occurence

frequency of occurrence

Several waves of tsunami came at intervals of 5-40mins. In Kalutara Sri Lanka, the water reached atleast 1 km inland causing widespread destruction

warning signs- a disaster should have ....... and the warning signs in this was .........

There was no official warning system for the Indian Ocean in 2004 & many didn't recognize the natural warning signs In langi- people passed down stories about a deadly earthquake and tsunami in 1907 therefore when the earthquake struck in 2004 residents reacted immediately by fleeing to high ground Knlowledge of the natural tsunami warning signs is the key to saving lives Ground shaking may be the first natural warning *****The only sign came just before the tsunami struck when waterline suddenly retreated, exposing hundreads of meters of beach and seabed

magnitude of disaster(deaths & destruction)

Somalia - 800 India-18,000 Indonesia -165,000 In the village of Jantang on the island of Sumatra 50 % died and Langi in the island of Simeulue neighbouring village everyone survived All together 220 , 000 people lost their lives

nature of damage- site, on the bottom, where u used it.

Main impacts A quarter of a million people died. Two million people were made homeless. People were swept away in the waters, which arrived rapidly and with little warning. Thirteen countries were affected, the worst being Indonesia. Indonesia was hit by the tsunami first. Fourty-five minutes later the tsunami reached Thailand. Mangrove swamps helped to act as a barrier to reduce the energy of the water in some areas. Short-term aid, such as water purification tablets, temporary housing and medical supplies were given from international countries. Islands reliant on tourism and fishing, such as the Maldives, had to rebuild their industries. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/4126019.stm#Malaysia countries impacted

An early warning system between countries surrounding the Indian Ocean has been set up. images, tables and graphs- url and caption. evidence of damage(picz)-url list by alpha-citation by surname lessons for future.
