ACTION ALERT TO DUMP THE DUMP

Take Action to Stop the MTS
New York City must renew its 5-year operating permit for the East 91st Street Marine Transfer Station with New York State in the coming weeks. This gives New Yorkers fighting the dump the chance to make the State conduct a thorough public review of the Citys effort to renew the permit it needs to build the MTS. It is critical that New Yorkers fighting the dump write to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) to urge it to: solicit public comment on the Citys effort to renew its permit to build and operate the MTS; hold a public hearing on the Citys application; and thoroughly review the MTS, its compliance with new flood regulations proposed by the federal government, and the major changes in the community around the site since the Citys permit was first issued.

Letters should refer to the East 91st Street Marine Transfer Station and DEC Permit Number: 2-6204-00007/00013, and be addressed to: John F. Cryan Regional Permits Administrator for Region 2 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Environmental Permits 47-40 21st Street Long Island City, NY 11101

Take Action to Stop the MTS!

Its been almost five years since New York City first obtained a permit from New York State to build and operate the Marine Transfer Station at East 91st Street. The community has changed drastically since then: After Superstorm Sandy, the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) proposed new flood regulations for waterfront infrastructure projects like the MTS, which the City wants to build at almost six feet below the new federal guidelines Thousands of new residents have moved to the area and significant new construction is occurring Five new schools have opened or are opening new buildings within ten blocks of the MTS site The advent of Select Bus Service has resulted in the designation of a permanent dedicated bus lane on First Avenue, with one on Second Avenue to follow The City has constructed a permanent dedicated bicycle lane on First Avenue, with one on Second Avenue to follow

Write to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and urge it to solicit public comment on the Citys permit renewal application, hold a public hearing, and conduct a comprehensive review of the MTSs compliance with new FEMA flood regulations and of the major changes in the community around the MTS site since the Citys permit was first issued five years ago.
