Product Information

METHYLENE CHLORIDE
Due to its high solvent capacity, methylene chloride offers a range of widely versatile applications. Methylene chloride acts as a solvent and extraction agent for lubricants, oils, mineral oils, waxes, resins, cellulose ester, caffeine, etc. in the metal-working, textiles, leather, plastics, pharmaceuticals and food industries. It is also used as a component in paint stripping and metal degreasing agents, as propellant additive and in removal-agent formulations for the production of polyurethane foam. Methylene chloride is also well-known as a highly efficient solvent and propellant component in sprays, whereby its application in cosmetic preparations is restricted to 35% (EC Dir. 96/335). Due to its volatility, exercise particular caution during application and handling of methylene chloride. As with other CHCs, methylene chloride may have a detrimental effect on health and the environment if incorrectly applied. It is therefore vitally important to train personnel in the safe handling, storage and disposal of CHCs and to instruct them in standard safety procedures. For further details, please refer to the safety data sheets. Your local Dow office or distributor will be pleased to provide you with any further information.

Information relating to the environment, health and safety: Methylene chloride evaporates more rapidly than other solvents normally employed in industrial applications. Make sure, therefore, that the threshold limits values for solvent vapour concentrations in the workplace are not exceeded and that restrictions on emissions are maintained. Take special precautions where necessary (additional ventilation, possibly protective masks). Any pertinent restrictions on emissions should be observed according to each application. Methylene chloride does not destroy the ozone layer. It influences only to a very minor extent smog formation, global warming and acid rain. Methylene chloride is biologically degradable in the environment.
