Digestion and Excretion Quiz

Part 1: Story Time - Fill in each blank in the story with the correct word(s) to make the tale
scientifically accurate. There is a word bank on the last page of the quiz you can rip off and use. If
a term is used more than once, the number of times the term is used will be in parenthesis next to
the word(s). (0.5 points each)
Urine: A Tale of Woe
Once upon a time there was a brownie named Urine (pronounced yur-eene). She wasnt born; she
was made. Made of what you ask? Arent you lucky? I will tell you: unsweetened cocoa, butter,
sugar, vanilla, salt, flour, and eggs. This is the story of her life and her untimely end.
Urines journey began on a stormy, spring day in early May - spontaneous consciousness achieved
in a warm if not hot environment.
Urines first physical sensation was being ripped apart by _______________________________. Little did
she realize that this was the first step in _______________________________ _______________________________.
Then came the slime. Urine was covered in a mixture of water, _______________________________, and
_______________________________ _______________________________better known as
_______________________________. Urine began to lose her short-lived consciousness as she began the
process of _______________________________ _______________________________. This was actually a gift because
she would not have wanted to experience what other travails were in her immediate future. Her
consciousness began to dwindle as flour, a _______________________________, began to be broken down
into sugars by the _______________________________ _______________________________.
Next Urine (We will still call her Urine, as if she continued to be a conscious, sentient brownie.) is
rolled into a ball called a _______________________________and forced into the
_______________________________by swallowing action. Urine has two options for which direction she
will go next. Deciding which pathway to take in life is often difficult. Luckily for Urine the choice
was not left up to her. Instead a flap of cartilage, the _______________________________, made the
decision for her. It blocked the pathway to the _______________________________, which forced Urine to
go down the _______________________________, a muscular tube that connects the cavity at the back of
the mouth to the _______________________________. The last challenge before making it into the

_______________________________was getting past the _______________________________

_______________________________ - a ring of muscle that once breached would make it nearly impossible
for Urine to change the destiny of her life. Now there would be only one direction to go and that
direction was not up.
Next, Urine began to be violently assaulted by the muscle contractions of the stomach. If that were
not enough, she was then exposed to an acid bath. _______________________________
_______________________________ in the stomach began to release _______________________________
_______________________________. The acid bath was necessary for the continued torture of Urine. The
_______________________________ pH was essential for the next adversary to do its work;
_______________________________ would now begin to break down Urines egg whites into
_______________________________. Urine no longer resembled anything close to her former self. Instead
she was a grotesque, acidic fluid known as _______________________________.
Little by little Urine made her way through the _______________________________
_______________________________ into the _______________________________, the first segment of the small
intestine. In the _______________________________ the remaining _______________________________
_______________________________ of Urine would be completed, aided by the accessory organs of the
_______________________________ and the _______________________________. The _______________________________
released _______________________________ _______________________________to neutralize the
_______________________________ coming from the stomach. It also released several different types of
enzymes to help break down the remaining components of Urine: _______________________________
completed the break down Urines egg whites into _______________________________
_______________________________; _______________________________ _______________________________ continued to
break down Urines flour as well as her sugar into _______________________________ such as
_______________________________; _______________________________ broke down Urines butter into glycerol
and _______________________________ _______________________________; _______________________________ cleaved
nucleic acids into individual _______________________________. The _______________________________ didnt
release digestive enzymes but produced _______________________________, which was also necessary for
the successful digestion of Urines _______________________________ and egg yolks.
_______________________________ is important because it emulsifies the _______________________________in
food; it breaks _______________________________ globules into small droplets so they are easier to digest
and can travel through the blood.

The nutrients provided by the chemical digestion of Urine made it to the rest of the small
intestines, the _______________________________and _______________________________, where they were
_______________________________into the bloodstream. _______________________________ and
_______________________________ supplied by Urine were also absorbed in the small intestine.
_______________________________ are small organic molecules that known as _______________________________;
_______________________________ are molecules necessary to make enzymes function correctly and
efficiently. _______________________________ are naturally occurring _______________________________
substances essential for making certain body structures, providing normal muscle and nerve
function, and maintaining osmotic balance.
What was left of Urine made it into the _______________________________ _______________________________.
Here these brownie bites were compacted and concentrated as _______________________________ was
absorbed. The brownie formally known as Urine was then finally eliminated through the
_______________________________ with the help of wave-like muscular contractions known as
_______________________________. She may have looked similar on the outside, but she would no longer
taste nearly as good.
(You never know when you might find the remains of Urine floating around in your toilet.)
