(2014) Reactivity of the Strongest Oxidizing Species in Aqueous Solutions: the Short-lived Radical Cation H2O+ J. Phys. Chem. Lett. Description of the project (20 lines, maximum) Oxidation reactions are a very important class of chemical reactions in solution. Examples are the corrosion that is the alteration of a material by an oxidant, or the oxidative stress that is a type of attack on the constituents of the cell involved in many diseases. The radicals play a very important role, especially in the metabolic system where their reactivity has been well studied. Some of these radicals can also be used to treat certain diseases, such as in cancer radiotherapy, or applied in depolluting water from pesticides, bacteria and dyes. Pulses from lasers or electron accelerators are used to create the radical species, and a synchronized method of time-resolved detection of their optical properties is used for observing their reactions. The + radical cation H2O formed under irradiation of liquid water undergoes an ultrafast proton transfer reaction and consequently displays an extremely short life-time. The proton transfer produces an + oxidizing OH radical whose reactivity has been extensively studied. In contrast, H 2O reactivity with molecules other than water was yet prevented from observation and was subject to controversy. + However, the direct oxidation by H2O can take place in various situations, and its chemistry is of broad significance to understand the damages induced by radiation in live cells and materials. By picosecond + pulse radiolysis, the reactivity of H2O can be quantitatively determined. H2O + M M + H2O The work will take place on the installation of picosecond pulse ELYSE radiolysis in Physical Chemistry laboratory of the Paris-Sud University. Installation ELYSE combines a picosecond electron beam for ionization and a laser beam pulses to probe the species created by the electron pulse.
