Math 212, Winter 2014: Topics to Review for Exam #2 Your second exam in Math 212 will be given

in class on Wednesday, February 12th. You need to be sure that you understand the material we have been covering in class. To help you prepare, I am listing the chapter sections, topics and page and problem numbers that you need to have mastered. Recall that no calculators or other electronic devices are allowed on the exams. During this exam you will not be allowed to use your books or notes. 2.3, p. 116+: The Algebra of Functions Domain of a function (cannot divide by zero, so those values of the variable that make the denominator of a function = 0 are not allowed in the domain) Example 1, p. 118 Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing two functions and evaluating the result Examples 2, 3, 4, 5 (starting on p. 119) Additional practice problems , p. 122+: 5 43 odd

2.4, p. 126+: Linear Functions and Slope Find the x- and y- intercepts from the equation of a line (Example 1, p. 128: Steps 1 and 2) Graph the equation of a line using the intercepts (Example 1, p. 128: Steps 4)) Findg the slope of a line given the coordinates of two points (Example 2, p. 129+) Know the relationship between the slope of the line and its graph (Table 2.1, p. 129) Know how to write the equation of a line in slope-intercept form (Box at bottom of p. 131 and Example 3,p. 132) Know how to graph a line by using its slope and y-intercept (Examples 4 and 5, p. 133+) Know how to graph horizontal and vertical lines (Examples 6 and 7m p. 134+) Know how to interpret the slope of a line in an application problem. (Example 8, p. 136) Additional practice problems: p. 140+: 1 79 odd

3.1, p. 167+: Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables Know the vocabulary: intersecting, parallel and coincident lines Be able to tell whether a given point is a solution to a system of linear equations. (p. 166+. Example 1) Solve a system of linear equations by graphing. (p. 168, Example 2) Solve a system of linear equations by substitution. (p. 169+, Examples 3 and 4) Solve a system of linear equations by elimination. (p. 171+, Examples 5, 6, 7) Understand the chart at the top of p. 175 Solve a system of linear equations with no solution or infinitely-many solutions. (p. 175+, Examples 8 and 9) Determine how many solutions there are to a system of linear equations by comparing the slopes and y-intercepts. See next page for a summary of what you must know.

If the slopes are not equal, the lines are intersecting. Then there is one solution (c,d) If the slopes are equal and the y-intercepts are equal, the lines are coincident. Then there are infinite solutions of the form y = mx + b (the equation of the line) . If the slopes are equal by the y-intercepts are equal, the lines are parallel. In this case there are no solutions.

3.2, p. 192: Problem Solving You must know how to solve a number problem (1 4 all) in two variables and the coin problem (25, 26) in two variables. A more advanced mixture problem (19 24) will also be included. You can get extra credit by solving this kind on the test.

Other recommendations: Chapter 2 Review, p. 160+: 1 5 all, 27 53 all Mid-Chapter Check, p. 207: 1 6 all Chapter3 Review, p. 235+: 1 13 all, 16 Review your quiz, class problems, class notes, and homework problems. Then you will be ready!
