i (CCHI) was resurrected in 2008 by executive director emeritus, Nikki Love. Now, in 2014, Common Cause Hawaii is on the brink of growing out of its start-up phase. To help Common Cause Hawaii mature, and expand, our strategy is now to focus on capacity-building. To ensure an active board, below is an outline of tasks board members are asked to engage in: attend board meetings, engage in board tasks (Governance, Fund Development, and Public Policy), and sit on at least one standing committee. Requirements for all board members Board Meetings Serve a term of two years (staggered terms); may succeed themselves. Attend Board meetings, committee meetings and any special meetings called by the Board Chair on an as needed basis. Board members are expected to attend at least 75% out of the annual meetings, in addition to the annual board retreat, when applicable. Board members are asked to report excused absences in advance. Board Tasks: Governance, Fund Development, and Public Policy As part of the board, each board member will be expected to assist the executive director, and work with other board members on these governance, fund development, and public policy tasks. Governance Attend 75% of board meetings, and board development, learning opportunities, and special events as they arise Sign and comply with the Conflict of Interest and Code of Ethics policy agreement, which must be renewed annually Maintain active Common Cause membership Learn about the organization, its history, assets, current programs and services, strategic plan, and Common Cause framework Support the executive director in developing and refining broad-based organizational policies that govern the operation of the organization Support the executive director in developing and monitoring execution of strategic plan

Advise the executive director on fiscal management Identify board member candidates Conduct annual Board self-assessment and conduct exit interviews with retiring board members Clearly articulate the mission, accomplishments and goals to the public to garner support Develop and maintain beneficial relationships with key constituencies (members, government, funders, volunteers, businesses) Be active on at least one standing committee (see next section)

Fund Development Make an annual contribution commensurate with ability to give, exclusive of special events and giving campaigns. The board may recommend an annual contribution level. Let the executive director and fundraising committee know of prospective donors and members Sign onto semi-annual donation letters Attend at least two CCHI-sponsored events throughout the year Recruit and motivate new members; work with executive director to retain existing members Actively participate in one or more fundraising effort (prospecting, cultivation, recognition, solicitation and stewardship) as outlined in the Fund Development Expectations document

Public Policy Submit two testimonies during legislative session, on bills that CCHI is supporting

Standing Committees Each board member is asked to serve on at least one standing committee. If board representation is not equally distributed on all standing committees, the Board Chair or Executive Director may reassign board members, or ask certain board members to join another standing committee. Other committee members do not have to be board members, but must be CCHI members. Board members support events on an ad-hoc basis. (See Common Cause Hawaii Standing Committee document for full descriptions) 1) Fund Development/Membership The Fund Development/Membership committee helps the executive director and advisory state board carry out its function related to assuring CCHIs fiscal health through philanthropy and fund development, and engaging Common Cause members and community members with our mission to promote an open, honest, and accountable government. This committee also aims to broadens and sustains state-wide support of Common Causes mission for an open, honest and accountable government, through growing and retaining membership. 2) Policy and Government Relations Through the Policy and Government Relations committee, CCHI members can stay one step ahead of future legislation, acting in a proactive manner. 3) Public Relations and Communications- The Public Relations and Communications Committee enhances the Organizations public image by clearly articulating Common Causes mission, accomplishments and goals to the public to garner support. Board members should possess a passionate interest in promoting and advocating for good government reform, as well as a commitment to Common Cause and its mission.
