Student profile
Amina Hussain, 19, is a second year law student and first decided on a career in law after gaining work experience with a legal practice firm while studying for her GCSEs. Research into law degree courses followed and it was the ethos in addition to the job-focused attitude of Manchester Metropolitan University and the success of its students which was the deciding factor in making her final degree choice.

I already feel like I am working in the profession. I have so much to learn but this is much more than a course, it is a realistic period of preparation for the real thing. The chance to meet high profile legal professionals and to engage in debates with other like-minded students is made possible through societies such as the Critical Lawyers Group. On reflection, I considered a number of universities before making my final decision and my instincts have served me well in making the right choice. The support I have had from my tutors and the Students Union has been a great help. Manchester Law School provides a very social environment which is shared with its students and staff and it is this atmosphere which fits very well with a people-focused career.

I chose a law degree after completing experience in the field. Seeing the law first hand not only helped me choose what I wanted to do but also the area of law that I wanted to specialise in. The attraction of Family Law is its comprehensive nature and the relationships it fosters with the client. Im sure it is not to everyones taste but I believe it matches my personality and is an area where I will be able to use my natural empathy and interest in people. I am half way through my degree and already know what I would like to achieve. I look forward to becoming a Solicitor Advocate and value that I am studying the right subject at the right university.

Our LLB in depth

Flexibility full-time, part-time or distance learning

We are very aware that students have differing requirements and lifestyles so we are able to offer a Qualifying Law Degree on a full-time, part-time or distance learning basis.

Get to where you want to be and fit it into your lifestyle.

Our LLB is a Qualifying Law Degree this means that once you graduate you are able to go on to further training to become a solicitor or barrister. All Qualifying Law Degrees cover the same core subjects, or the Foundations of Legal Knowledge. In addition to the core subjects, you will study a range of optional electives. These give you the opportunity to choose part of your studies to suit your interests and future career plans.

Full-time three years

The full-time course is very popular and has specified entry requirements as detailed on page 10. The course includes twelve hours teaching time per week in four different subjects. This is divided into two hours of small workshop groups and an hour of larger group teaching per subject, each week. This is a very high level of face to face teaching but our students respond very favourably and it is just one reason why the course is so popular. We have a minimum attendance requirement at seminars; this is in place to ensure that you get the most out of the course and keep up to date with your learning. For further information visit www.law.mmu.ac.uk/llb

Distance learning four years

Our distance learning option, the LLB in Legal Practice, is a Qualifying Law Degree with a difference as it also meets the academic requirements to become a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer. Developed jointly by Manchester Law School and ILEX Tutorial College (ITC), the degree is taught via supported distance learning so you can study from anywhere. For further details about this course please telephone 01234 844366 or visit www.law.mmu.ac.uk/llb-dl

Our LLB is also available with a Foundation Year which is designed to provide access for students who dont have the necessary qualifications to enter directly onto the LLB honours degree but do have the potential to succeed at this level. The Foundation Year programme therefore attracts many students from non-traditional education backgrounds and under-represented groups. The content of the Foundation Year is tailored to prepare you for the LLB honours degree so that you start Year 1 of the honours degree with confidence. You will study a core Foundation Year unit designed to develop your academic and study skills and a further three units covering an introduction to business, civil justice, and criminal justice. Once you have passed the Foundation Year you will progress directly onto Year 1 of the LLB honours degree. Application to the Foundation Year is made through UCAS: LLB (Hons) Law (foundation) UCAS code M101.
