KEEPING KEEPING CURRENT CURRENT WITH WITHTHE THE ALPHA ALPHA GROUP GROUP
n September of 2007, The Alpha Group was called into a major provider of specialized US homeland defense products and services to make a presentation on its enclosures, power systems and solar applications. At that time, the leading competing candidate for this contract had recently sold their power division, thus opening the door for The Alpha Group. The quote would be for a complete powering solution for a large security project aimed at monitoring and preventing illegal cross-border trafc in and out of the United States. The scope of the project would involve several thousand cell tower locations utilizing DC power, solar and wind energy equipment. The customer needed to maximize range and coverage and minimize the number of security sites while incorporating multiple energy sources, as many remote locations would not have access to grid power. A collaborative team of specialists from Argus Technologies comprising of Sales Reps John Younts and Ted Burk, Applications Engineer Barry Bell and Regional Sales Manager Duffy Heffernan went about the challenge of designing a -48V, 1200 Amp power system with two-tiers of distribution, a Cordex controller and an INEX inverter

Guidelines for Product Photography

Photoshoot Summary Shoot from the vertical center of the product. Fill the image area as much as possible with the product. Shoot with a large aperture (10 or larger) When composing the shot, find a focal point, and then use manual focus to maintain consistent focus throughout the series of images for that product (applicable for 360 degrees images). When using lights, try to minimize glare and try to light as evenly as possible. If available, use a left, right and ll light. Avoid using direct flashes or on-camera flashes as they create harsh spots. Move cords out the way so that they can be photoshopped out after. Use either white or black backgrounds for most products to generate a solid edge for the image (this helps when clipping the product). For the more stylized Glamour shots, shoot from the bottom of the image to create a towering look. Shoot at as wide an angle as possible and use a smaller aperture (to create a soft edge in the background and a sharp edge in the foreground and focal point). The glamour images should be shot from a 3/4 iso view of the front right corner of the product. Spend time on the front end (planning) to save time on the back end. Define the number and type of photos required. Shoot more than your think you will use. Film is the cheapest part of a photoshoot; Its even cheaper now that things are digital. Yes, pictures can be fixed via software, but the less time spent doing so is better. If possible, do the photoshoot as a team (photographer and requestor of photos) to ensure a particular shot isnt omitted. Sometimes, the shot appears as a result of looking at a unit under the lights and visualizing how the photo will be used. Experiment with the placement of the lights to reduce shadows as much as possible. Use a small reflector to bounce light into the interior of an enclosure. Use a tripod. Utilize the self-timer feature of the camera. This will eliminate camera shake and allow the photos to be sharp. Learn how to set the cameras White Balance to color-correct the photos as they are taken. Typically, you can set the white balance of a camera by photographing something white under lights youve set up. A photo background or back of a reflector (some come with silver and white sides) are examples of what could be used. Experiment with the macro (close-up feature) of the camera for photos of detail. Clean the subject thoroughly (especially fingerprints). If you are photographing the interior of a product (e.g., enclosure), be aware of metal shavings and other debris. Photograph your subject at the highest resolution available. A 300 ppi (pixel per inch) photo is suitable for use in a printed piece. For web applications, the image resolution can be reduced (resampled) to 72 ppi. If you shoot the image at the lower resolution (72 ppi), the results will be less than satisfactory if you try to resample the image to a higher resolution, as the image data simply does not exist.
Very low resolution image - not useful for practical applications High resolution image - can be used for large format printing and posters Soft, diffused light is much warmer and does not create the high contrast shadows Harsh lighting, like that created with on board flash, create dark heavy shadows

The principal of thirds - place subject at one of the above intersections.
