RAPID PROTOTYPING

ABSTRACT
Rapid Prototyping refers to a range of new technologies which construct physical three-dimensional objects by assembling thin layers of material under computer control. Objects can be made which are extremely accurate, complex, and beautiful, and which no other technology can produce. Also, it is now easy to perform iterative testing: build a prototype, test it, redesign, build and test, etc. Such an approach would be far too time-consuming using traditional prototyping techniques, but it is easy using RP. The latest method of creating a complex part is to produce the model by computer aided design and cut it in a layer wise fashion. A software package "slices" the CAD model into a number of thin (~0.1 mm) layers, which are then built up one atop another. A laser beam traces each layer onto the surface of a vat of liquid photo polymeric material which solidifies when exposed to ultraviolet light. The solidified layer is then lowered into the vat so that another layer of liquid is ready to be exposed to the laser. The different types of techniques of rapid prototyping are as follows. o Stereolithography. o Laminated Object Manufacturing o Selective Laser Sintering o Fused Deposition Modeling o Solid Ground Curing o 3-D Ink-Jet Printing Besides these different types this paper gives historical perspective of rapid prototyping. Also this paper mainly deals with the explanation of its types and applications of Rapid prototyping in diverse fields such as in Anthropology, Mathematics, Medicine and Dentistry, Art and Architecture, Engineering, Science, Industry Design
