There are various ways to upgrade to Oracle 11.2.0.3 and I will be performing an out-ofplace upgrade (best practice) using the Database Configuration Assistant (DBUA). Select values from v$version (Pre-install) -

One of the first steps before upgrading is to check any issues that you may encounter during the upgrade process. There is an Pre-Upgrade Information Tool that can be downloaded from the Oracle Support site. This is basically a pre-upgrade script that can be executed on the database and it gathers information about the database configuration and settings that might need to be modified/updated before the actual upgrade. There are various scripts depending upon from which version you are upgrading to Oracle 11.2.0.3, I will be using the utlu112i_5.sql. Log in to the system as the owner of the Oracle Home and connect to the database as SYSDBA and execute the above script and spool it to a file

Download the Oracle Database Patch set (1040530) from the Oracle Support site. Go to the new installation downloads and run installation

When finished, set the environment variable for new home $export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_2 $export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH

Copy the init/spfile and password files from the 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3. Copy the listener.ora, sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora files from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3.
