ABET Self-Study Report

Mechanical Engineering (Thermal En. & Desalination Tech) Program

CRITERION 6. FACULTY A. Faculty Qualifications "Describe the qualifications of the faculty and how they are adequate to cover all the curricular areas of the program. This description should include the composition, size, credentials, and experience of the faculty. Complete Table 6-1. Include faculty resumes in Appendix B." Leadership Qualifications The Department head Dr. Khaled Alnefaie is the chief executive officer of the Mechanical Engineering (Thermal Engineering and Desalination Technology) Program. He reports to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Many of our faculty members served as the Department Head. For Example, Dr. A.Y. Bokhary was the Department head for the period starting from year 2006 to year 2012. During this period, the Mechanical Engineering (Thermal Engineering and Desalination Technology) Program obtained its ABET EAC EC2000 accreditation. Other Qualifications, Credentials and Experience The entire academic faculty holds Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Mechanical Engineering or closely related fields and having considerable engineering experience within nationally and internationally known teaching and research institutions and industry as can be seen from Table 6-1. The majority has many years of teaching experience and is very enthusiastic and dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of the bachelors degree Program. Most faculty members have either direct industrial experience or indirect experience through their consultation work. Eleven of the faculty members are active with sponsored research programs. They maintain close and frequent contact with professionals in the industry and other faculty from peer institutions. At least six faculty members are directly participating in professional society services. Prof. Yacine Khetib is the most recent hire (Fall, 2011). He has participated in Course Design, Assessment and Evaluation workshops offered by the Program in Year 2012. Given the universitys emphasis on encouraging both pioneering research and academic excellence, the diversity of the faculty is a strength of our program. Faculty members represent several different countries and nationalities, thus strengthening the global perspective of the program. All Engineering faculty members possess excellent oral and written communication skills. These attributes are considered in both the hiring and promotion processes. Student responses to the end-of-semester course evaluations indicate that the faculty communicates well, both inside and outside the classroom. The majority of the faculty has attended various workshops and seminars on teaching effectiveness offered either by the Faculty of Engineering or the Program. Some faculty members are active in professional societies. See faculty curriculum vitae (CV) included in Appendix B and the faculty analysis data in Table 6-1 for more information. Adequacy of Faculty to Coverage of Curricular Areas In general, the Program faculty is grouped into three (3) major emphasis areas for undergraduate teaching: 1)Thermal Engineering Sciences; 2)Desalination; and 3) Applied Thermal Hydraulics covering Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning, Power

B. Faculty Workload "Complete Table 6-2, Faculty Workload Summary, and describe this information in terms of workload expectations or requirements." The regular full-time workload for academic faculty includes teaching, research, advising undergraduate students, institutional and community service, and professional society responsibilities. Assignments of individual faculty members take into account class size, instructional support, and number of formal and informal contact hours with students. The average teaching load is two courses per faculty member per semester. A typical work load for a regular full time faculty member during the 9-month academic year is teaching (50%), research (25%), and service (25%) which includes academic advising, administrative committee duties and activities such as curriculum development as well as professional service. See faculty workload summary information in Table 6-2 for more information. C. Faculty Size "Discuss the adequacy of the size of the faculty and describe the extent and quality of faculty involvement in interactions with students, student advising and counseling, university service activities, professional development, and interactions with industrial and professional practitioners including employers of students." Adequacy of the Size of the Faculty The Program faculty is of adequate size and is well qualified to cover all the Program core and electives courses of the curriculum as well as diverse in engineering experience and background, culture, and nationality. The faculty consisting of eighteen (18) full-time members is more than sufficient to promote excellent studentfaculty interaction for the currently enrolled 141 undergraduate students. This approximately translates into an 8-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Since the last ABET visit, two academic faculty member retired (Dr. Abdulhady Fatany and Dr. Anas Madani) and one academic faculty member passed away, (Prof. Jalal Zaki, Allah's blessing be upon him) while three (3) new highly qualified academic faculty members have been added to the Program (Dr. Elsayed A. Shabana, Dr. Salem A.

Anos, and Prof. Yacine M. Khetib). The current size of our faculty is quite adequate for the teaching of all Program core curriculum and technical electives. Student-Faculty Interactions, Student Advising and Counseling Advising in the Program is done by about 50% of the full-time faculty and on the average there are up to sixteen (16) students assigned per faculty advisor. Hence, our faculty size is adequate for advising our students. As explained in Criterion 1 of this self study report, incoming newly admitted students who have not yet chosen a specialization area are supervised by the office of the academic affairs at the faculty of engineering. For the subsequent semesters students are evenly distributed among the responsible Program faculty members. In general, our faculty interacts with students in two ways besides instructional duties: (1) Student advisement: Faculty helps students in: o selecting courses that will ensure smooth progress towards the degree o understanding the core curriculum and major graduation requirements o assessing his ability to complete the required academic load and offer alternatives when appropriate o finding students support services around the campus o selecting career options related to the students interests (2) Office hours: All academic faculty members are expected to maintain regular office hours for a minimum of 2 hours per week during the academic year. Furthermore, a Program-wide open door policy is adopted in which students are encouraged to visit available faculty with their questions of both academic and personal nature. Faculty Interactions with university service activities Our faculty interacts with university service activities through participating in Program, Departmental, College and University different committees. Also, many of our faculties are members of the college and university councils. For example, Prof. Majed Al Hazmi is a member of the scientific council of the University. Also, he is a member of the college curriculum committee. Dr. Mohammad Al- Beirutty is the director of Center of Excellence in Desalination Technology. Regarding social activities provided with university, Dr. Ahmad Bokhary served as the Chairman of Cultural Committee in the Faculty of Engineering. Faculty Interactions with Industrial and professional practitioners Our faculty interacts with industrial and professional practitioners including employers of students in many ways including: (1) Faculty members are assigned to meet with employers of students under training during the conduction of both the Summer training course (MEP390) for regular track students and the Coop Work course (MEP400) for the Coop Work Program track students. More details are mentioned in Criterion 5. (2) Faculty members meet with the employers of students during the Employers meeting and Carrier affairs. This meeting is made every 2-3 years to discuss and assess the Program Educational Objectives and the Student Outcomes as discussed in Criterion 2, 3 and 4. (3) Faculty members meet with number of employers of students during the Advisory Board meeting. This meeting is made every 2-3 years to validate the Program Educational Objectives as discussed in Criterion 2.

(4) Faculty members meet with the employers of students during the scientific trips organized by the Program student club as discussed in Criterion 1. (5) Faculty members meet with industrial and professional practitioners through attending local, national and international conferences and forums. (6) Faculty members meet with industrial and professional practitioners through their consulting work period in industry as shown in Table 6-1. It should be mentioned that many industrial and professional practitioners are sponsoring research projects that are investigated by our faculty as can be seen from faculty curriculum vita (CV) included in Appendix B. D. Professional Development "Describe the professional development activities that are available to faculty members." Our faculty provides significant service to the administrative, research, and educational objectives of the University, as well as to the professional societies. Many faculty members serve on numerous Departmental, college, and university administrative positions and committees. Faculty members are actively involved in various professional development activities that include: attending and presenting seminars and lectures, participation in research and teaching workshops, attending professional conferences, grant and proposal review activities, and publishing refereed journal articles. Some faculty members are active participants in professional societies, serving on editorial boards and on technical committees. For example, Professor Omar Al-Rabghi is the current Chairperson of the KAU Journal of Engineering, Paper Review Committee. Prof. A. Khaled is an associate editor of the Journal of Electronic Cooling and Thermal Control. Prof. Y. Khetib is a member of International Institute of Refrigeration and Representative of Algeria to the IIR and member at Commission C1 in the IIR at Paris (France). Other roles of faculty in professional societies can be seen in Appendix B, Curriculum Vitae of faculty. Professional development activities are primarily self-driven by the individual faculty member. The University has an annual competitive grant program for funding research proposals submitted by the faculty. Additionally there are other national research funding programs like the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) grants for which the faculty can apply. The Program budget allows for faculty to attend at least one conference per year. Additional travel allowance for attending conferences and workshops are generally funded by the research grants allocated to the principal investigators. The University through its Center for Teaching and Learning Development, Central Library, Deanship of Research and Faculty of Engineering provide many instructional development opportunities at no cost to the Program. Some of the short courses offered by this Center include: o Teaching Methods for Large Groups o Use of Simulations in Education o Preparation of the University Teacher o Effective Presentation Skills o Use of Computer in University Education o Training and Trainers o Use of Digital Libraries Databases o Use of ISI and other Researches Databases

o Use of Researcher IDs o Active Learning Tools Courses are also offered by the previous entities on writing effective research proposals, publishing books and health issues. The University sabbatical program is intended to support faculty development. Faculty can take a one-year leave at full salary to pursue their professional development activities. These leaves are approved upon review of proposals at the Department, College, and University levels. The University Prizes Program for excellence in scientific research administered by the Deanship of Research has proven to enhance the faculty professional development activities. This Program grants the faculty members valuable rewards and distinctions due to their fruitful participations in the field of scientific research. This Program urged many of the faculty members to maintain currency in their professional development activities and encouraged the rest of the faculty members to follow their example. The present awards for excellence in scientific research include: Awards for publishing in the Science and Nature journals. Scientific publishing award. Awards for research citations. Award for granting international awards. Technical Innovation Awards. Patent registering and scientific discoveries awards. Awards for book translations. Award for best research center at the University. Award for best scientific chair at the University. E. Authority and Responsibility of Faculty "Describe the role played by the faculty with respect to their guidance of the program, and in the development and implementation of the processes for the evaluation, assessment, and continuing improvement of the program, including its program educational objectives and student outcomes. Describe the roles of others on campus, e.g., dean or provost, with respect to these areas." Our faculty is the most important element of our successful Program. The faculty is the main link in the students learning process and a heavy responsibility rests on them in achieving the Program Educational Objectives. They are responsible for the design, review, and maintenance of the curriculum and teaching the courses and laboratories to insure consistency with the Program Educational Objectives. Thus the faculty leads, guides, develops and prepares students with varying degrees of academic preparation to become successful mechanical engineers in all respects. Members of the Program faculty possess expertise covering a broad range of thermal engineering specialties, including refrigeration and air-conditioning, desalination, gas turbines and internal combustion engines, power plants, and heat and mass transfer. They are interested in and are very knowledgeable about the thermal and desalination engineering curriculum and provide their input to its design, evaluation and implementation. All members of the faculty participate in outcome assessment efforts and the implementation of improvements based on these assessments. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated as an inherent part of our Student's Outcomes

assessment and continuous improvement process as discussed and explained in detail earlier in Criteria 2, 3 and 4 of this self study report. Through these processes, the faculty assures that the curriculum adequately covers each subject area to meet the Program Educational Objectives and achieve the Student Outcomes. Our faculty has always maintained significant interaction with employers and practitioners in the discipline via participation in career affairs and meetings with national industries and collecting their input regarding our curriculum. The faculty members within the Program ABET Preparation Committee review and analyze the surveys and comments collected from the different constituencies related to the Program Educational Objectives, Student Outcomes and the Curriculum development. The surveys and comments are prepared, distributed and collected by the faculty members within the Program Alumni, Advisory board, and Industrial Relations Committee, The curriculum committee of the Program prepares new proposals for course and curriculum improvements and development based on constituencies' feedback with eye on additional requirements imposed by the University and Faculty of Engineering. Different workshops and discussion sessions between the Program faculty can be made in order to come with a proposal for a curriculum satisfying the program constituencies and University requirements. The proposed curriculum is then approved by the program council and raised to the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Engineering for additional reviews. The Faculty of Engineering Council raises the new curriculum to the University Curriculum Committee for the final review process. Then, the University Council discusses the recommendations of the latter Committee and makes the final decision about the new curriculum. New curriculums are usually approved by the University Council as long as they support satisfaction of the mission and the vision of the University. It should be mentioned that the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering is a member of the University Council. The Dean's role in demonstrating how the new program curriculum is consistent with the vision and mission of the University is very appreciable. All of the Program committees play significant roles in the development and implementation of the various processes for the evaluation, assessment, and continuing improvement of the program as can be seen from Table 0.1. Their duties and responsibilities can directly or indirectly impart the complete process of ABET Inc. accreditation. The Universitys Vice President for Development through the Faculty of Engineerings Academic Accreditation Unit (AAU) facilitates the various Programs in working for ABET Inc. accreditation. The main assistance is in promoting ABET Inc. accreditation understanding by organizing seminars and workshops, helping in designing assessment forms, monitoring assessment activities and following up the implementation of new requirements.
