English 100 EPE Example Essays based on the Example Reading, In Fearful Times, We Must Embrace Risk.

A level essay an excellent example: Score = 5 After the attacks of September 11th and the current wave of terrorism, our society has raised its level of awareness and become more conscious of the danger it once ignored. However, many believe that, in the process, our society has become too afraid to live its life with a sense of freedom. In the article, In Fearful Times, We Must Embrace Risk, Fenton Johnson, the author, feels that our society has become overly obsessed with cautiousness and security measures. He believes that we, as a nation, should be more willing to live our lives with courage and freedom. Although I agree with the authors point of view in that our society should be more willing to take calculated risks, I disapprove the authors lifestyle. The author feels that our society is overly obsessed with security measures and I agree. Although we live in a society where people are hijacking planes or using their bodies as weapons in order to kill, living our lives in fear only encourages these types of crimes. The author writes, At some point, we must declare to ourselves that we prefer risk over fear, life with liberty and faith in each other over more government intervention. I agree with this statement because even if we ask authorities to heightened security measures, we are not guaranty of total security. For instance, the author mentions the recent bombings in Spain. Many believe that this incident occurred because the local authorities were not alert enough, but in reality, Spanish authorities, like our government, were prepared enough. Unfortunately, it is impossible to predict this type of crimes. Thus, we, as a nation, should be more willing to live our lives with courage and freedom. However, while I agree that we should live our lives in fear, I disapprove the authors reckless lifestyle. The author states, I often dont lock my doors. I often dont lock my car. I often leave my gym bag (sometimes containing my wallet and cell phone) in an unlock locker at the gym. I speak to strangers. I have never encountered serious crimes. Considering the fearful times we live in, I would advise the author not to take unnecessary risks. For once, leaving your belongings unattended, your house vulnerable, and talking to strangers does not show courage. The author mentions that he would rather live life courageously than being prudent. However, he fails to realize that he is more so being nave and irresponsible. Secondly, referring to the way people used to live in the past is not a good idea. In the past, the crime rate was much lower and people were allowed to live life without concerns. In todays society, however, it is too dangerous to be living irresponsibly. Lastly, the author infers that our society is less courageous because it does not take as many risks as it should. But in reality, the author fails to realize that he is the one living irresponsibly. In conclusion, although the authors opinion about making an effort to live our lives without fear is valid, his lifestyle should be imitated. In the world we live in, we should both be prudent and courageous and try not to let those terrorists make our lives filled with fear. B level essay a very good example: Score = 4

Do people believe we must take risks over fear? In the article, In Fearful Times, We Must Embrace Risk, by Fenton Johnson, he emphasizes we must take risks and not have an obsession with security. He explains how he is couragous and how he does not fear in anything. Although I disagree with the authors personal choice to choose courage over cautiousness, I agree we can be very precautious and still have things overlooked. Fenton chooses to be courageous when it comes to life were sometimes people need to be careful. He is a very daring man. He states in the article, I try to act with both prudence and courage, but forced to choose, Ill take the latter. It is a good thing to be courageous, but it is very important to be safe and secure. Fenton never locks his doors, talks to strangers, and leaves his wallet in a unlocked locker. He trusts humanity too much. As for me, I always lock my doors and try to be as safe as possible. Because I know my city has a high rate in crime and theft, I am forced to choose prudence. It would be best if we were to act with both prudence and courage. There are times when we need to take risks; however, there are times we need to focus on security. We need to take precautions no matter if we are courageous or cautous. Our society can be very precautious, but we can still have problems that can be overlooked. The author believes, An obsession with security can bleed away our lives. We can be scared and fearful to do anything which is taking away our lifes. At some point everyone needs to take a risk; the risk can be small or big. Fenton states one situation where people took security to another level, but something was overlooked. He states, But Spanish authorities had heightened security measures in place for fully 18 months prior to the bombings, and still they occured. While having high security to keep us safe, we do not pay much attention to the little things which cause many problems. Another situation was right after 911. There was strict security at airports; however, there was people who still managed to get weapons onto the planes. As hard as our country tries to be safe, we must realize there will always be something overlooked. In conclusion, at some point we need to take risks. There are times we need to prefer risk over fear. If we are always in fear, obsession with security can bleed away our lives. It is important for us to act with both prudence and courage because it is not good for us to always be scared. We need to know we can be as safe as we want, but there is still that chance. As a society in fearful times, we must embrace risks together. C level essay an adequate example: Score = 3 In the article In Fearful Times, We Must Embrace Risk, by Fenton Johnson, he is a brave man and he risks everyday of his life. He does not like to be scared to go anywhere or do anything without thinking of what can happen to him. This world is dangerous, but we can not be living scared day by day to avoid a crime. Today with our high crime rate, we need extra security everywhere its not a way to live especially in fear. A Quote from Johnson, People must be able to roam the wilderness assured of no danger from any species but our own. This is true now we are not fearing of mountain lions or bears, where afraid of our own human beings of being scared of kidnapping even rape. I know a lot of women you carry pepper spray in their purse. This is sad to see because you know their scared to walk down the street alone. Even people who live in decent home have about four locks on their doors. I

know I would not want to be worrying about will I be kidnapped today, will someone break into my car. These are things you just have to let go and let happen. Live your life to the fullest. Living your life without thinking what can happen to you, you can do anything you want. In the article Johnson quotes. Theyre public servants, their giving the public what we want, which is security at the price of our awareness of the real natural world in which like all our fellow creature we live and suffer and die in a miraculous interdependency in which life comes always and everywhere twinned with death. What Johnson states I think its so true. No matter what we do, how cautious we are, if its our time then its our time. No matter what happens we cant avoid death because its there. We live at risk and its all about thats life. We should pick risk over fear because fear can become stressful and too cosious it leads to death. In conclusion, dont live in fear live in risk. Live life to the fullest because what happens to you is planned to happen. I look at it this way. You live life and its hard, you work hard when your alive, but you rest when you die. Johnson expressed his risks hes taken and he loves it. Living with fear will only make you miserable. D level essay a poor example: Score = 2 In the article In Fearful Times, We Must Embrace Risk Written by Mr. Johnson. First he goes on describing himself as a person that because of his height (6-foot) and his pretty good shape this middle-aged man with a slew of adjectives as he goes on. He is tempting fate by leaving his house doors, car unlocked trusting mankind. Second He also states in his article that An Obsession with Security Can bleed away our lives, and goes on comparing the 1800s the Old West from past to present. and how people use to take risks. Like Mr. Powell. He was the one-armed leader of the first expedition to run the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon Im pretty sure they had to be attacked by Indians and bandits and some how many survived and went on with their lives. What Mr. Fenton Johnson means is that no matter how well protected a person feels. With top of the line Security alarms at home or with police protection on the streets We still have to take risks and not embrace the anavoidable. In my opinion I feel that Mr Johnson has this trust in human kind. Like My friend Florina says He has some Polliana which means that he fells we must trust and have a good attitude, because not all of The people is bad. Well I Also think that he is been very fortunate so far he has not been mugged nor his house has been robbed. He takes pleasure to know that he did not need any police protection in order to survive in the heart of Tucson I agree with him that we can not be living with fear because that would make us prisioners of our own fear, and that in order to survive you can not have a shield of protection because people feel that there is danger everywhere. We must live our life the way we want. because we can not predict when or what will happen next. Now the Police can protect us to some extent. And our part is to take precautions not exagerating. Just the Logic ones like, locking our house doors, Locking our cars, taking our wallet with us, be somewhat friendly but not trusting all the way. I on the other way I am friendly Take the normal precautions, I enjoy the surroundings because our life, our whole life is a risk and we have to live it no matter if

you live in the heart of the city or in the projects or in a nice neighborhood precautions should be taken regardless. F level essay an unacceptable example: Score = 1 Intro A man lives in the heart of Tucson which has higher then average rates of theft and violent crime. He believes that his image of being 6 foot middle aged and in shape will give him the adventage of not being robbed which is true but he believes in not locking the car, live gym bags around with phone and wallet inside. Also Leaves lockers unlocked. I like the quote in this article Wait until someone walks into your house and steals your 20-yr old television and smashes you in the head. Because, there are many ways for criminals to get you Just because, they might not come to you in the street and attack you To leave your house venerable gives them different ways of both hurting you and taking your stuff when your not expecting it. The article explains how Johnson believes that An obsession with security can bleed away our lives. He believes that us as people are always choosing to expand police powers and to restrict our liberties in a crimerical search for a security that never will be had. He also believes that taking away are freedom to go venture into the woods or canyons, is taking away opportunity to test our wits in the game of life. People must be able to roam the wilderness assured of no danger from any species but our own. He comes home to his untouched house and he feels free, Of knowing that he overcomes the parania that is our current national pastime. Conclusion I think its nice that he likes to take risk. But people went security for many reasons one can be theyre children, real little kids dont really know what good in the wilderness they might touch something that give them rashes, or get attacked by something because they were messing with it. Theyre many reason why parents dont went they kids in a totally wildlike environment. Also I dont think cheneeing his valuables, to prove a point of him not falling to the parania trap is smart. People dont care and theyll take all of what you have then youll have nothing, This werld is involved with material things to a point where you couldnt survive with out them.
