Sinusoidal and Non-sinusoidal Oscillators

Objective:
To study the performance of sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal oscillators. Components required: Op-amp 741, resistors, and diodes.

Experiment:
1. Wien bridge oscillator: 1.1 Design Wien bridge oscillator as shown in Figure 15.3 for a frequency of 16 kHz. Assume R=1 k, R1=1k. Assemble the circuit. Let R2 be the series combination of 1k fixed resistor and a potentiometer of 10 k. Measure the frequency and amplitude of the output waveform.

1.2 Double the value of C and repeat the measurements. foutput Vpeak to peak output = = .

1.3 Now assemble the circuit as shown in Figure 15.4 (a) with R 2= 1 k and R1= 10 k potentiometer. Connect diodes 1N914 or LEDs across R2. Measure the frequency and amplitude of the output waveform.

1.4 Compare the measured values with the designed values. 2. RC phase-shift oscillator: 1.1 Design a RC phase shift oscillator as shown in Figure 15.6 for a frequency of 6.5 kHz. Assume R=1 k and Rf= 100 k potentiometer. Assemble the circuit.

1.2 Measure the frequency and amplitude of the output waveform. foutput Vpeak to peak output = = .

1.3 Double the value of C and repeat the measurements. foutput Vpeak to peak output = = .

3. Astable Multivibrator (Square Wave generator): 3.1 Design an astable multivibrator as shown in Figure 15.8 for a frequency of 500 Hz. Let R2 =1.1 R1 and R = 10 k . Assemble the circuit.

3.2 Measure the frequency and amplitude of the output waveform. foutput Vpeak to peak output = = .

3.3 Double the value of C and repeat the measurements. foutput 3. PSPICE Simulations Use the dc model of A741. To simulate the circuit, give an initial charge to capacitor C 1 in order to start the oscillations. The op-amp dc power supply voltages are +15/-15 V. 3.1 Simulate the circuit used in experiment step 1 (Wien bridge oscillator) using PSPICE. Plot the output waveform and find its amplitude and frequency in each case. 3.2 Simulate the circuit used in experiment step 2 (RC phase shift oscillator) using PSPICE. Plot the output waveform and find its amplitude and frequency in each case. =
