USB Installation Guide

1. Read this first

This manual is meant to guide you through the installation of the Autolab instrument with USB interface. It explains how to connect the Autolab Hardware to the PC (paragraph 2.1), how to install the Autolab software (paragraph 2.2) and how to install the correct USB-drivers for the Autolab USB Interface (paragraph 2.3). There are some points which are important during the installation. These points are also explained in the concerning chapters: 1. Do NOT switch on the Autolab-USB or the USB Interface box during installation of the Autolab software. These devices must be switched on before the installation of the USBdrivers (paragraph 2.3). 2. All USB drivers can be loaded from the c:\Autolab\usb folder. After installation of the Autolab software this folder is available. 3. In Windows XP(Pro) you will get a message that the software you are installing for this hardware has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. You can ignore this message by pressing the Continue Anyway button. 4. Because of the different Windows XP layout the Autolab software windows are not looking very nice. Toolbar buttons are shown half and text does not fit properly on the screen. To avoid this problem, the Desktop can be changed to Windows classic layout. How to do this is described in paragraph 2.3. 5. With the newer PCs with a USB2 chipset it is possible that the measurement is halted after a while. This shows up as an Autolab Interface error or an iRMX error. The solution for this problem is described in paragraph 3.1 of this guide. Chapter 3 also describes how to handle other failures with the USB drivers or communication.

3. Troubleshooting the USB

3.1. Autolab Interface error or iRMX Error If during Diagnostics, Gpes or Fra sessions one of the following messages appears, something is wrong with the USB communication. This problem is often seen with the USB2 chipset but can also show up in rare cases with the USB1 chipset. In most cases this problem can be solved by connecting a powered USB1 chipset HUB between the PC and the Autolab.

The Autolab must be connected through the HUB. For installation of the HUB, follow the instructions from the HUB Installation guide. Connect the Autolab-USB or the USB Interface box to one of the free ports of the HUB. Autolab-USB or Autolab-USB with powered HUB:

3.2. Improper loading of USB-drivers When the USB drivers for the Autolab hardware are not loaded properly this shows up during booting of the Autolab Interface. The next error appears:

In order to be sure it is a failure of the USB-drivers and not of the communication itself, you can check if the proper drivers are loaded. The way of checking is different in Windows2000/XP and Windows98/Me. 3.2.1. Checking USB drivers in Windows2000/XP

Click with the right mouse button on My Computer, Select Properties, Select the Hardware-tab, Press the Device Manager-button,

32

The Device Manager-window will appear. Click on the +-sign in front of the Universal Serial Bus controllers. Now the drivers will be shown.

If an Autolab-USB instrument or USB Interface box is connected and switched on you should always see an item AUTOLAB Potentiostat / Galvanostat and Generic USB Hub. Switching off the Autolab-USB instrument or the USB Interface box will remove these items from the list. If you see an exclamation mark through the USB-icon or if the items are present in the list, something is wrong with the installation of the USB-drivers. You can try to solve these problems by following the instructions in paragraph 3.2.3.

3.3. Communication (cannot read Autolab) or noise problems with older Autolab instruments The Autolab-USB interface has special internal jumpers to obtain hardware compatibility with older interface cables and decoders. These jumpers have standard settings for the corresponding Autolab system. In very rare occasions these settings might not work properly. This will result in a noisy signal or, in worst case, failing communication with the Autolab system (Cannot read Autolab). Then following paragraphs will describe how to change these jumper settings. 3.3.1. Standard jumper settings The picture below shows the internal part of the Autolab-USB interface with the location of the jumpers.

Changing jumper settings Changing the jumper settings is done by opening the enclosure of the Autolab-USB interface. The following series of pictures explain how to open the enclosure without damaging it. Please follow these instructions carefully.

Important: Remove the adapter from the power source. Loosen the back panel by unscrewing the most-left and most-right screw.

38

USB Installation Guide

Remove the back panel for a few centimetres, be careful not to break the wiring of the fan.

Insert a screwdriver in the space between the chassis and the upper part and gently lift the upper part.

USB Installation Guide

39

Repeat previous action for the right side of the enclosure.

Gently lift the upper part until it is completely free. Check previous paragraph for the proper settings of the jumpers. The cover can be closed by snapping the upper part in its original position and replacing the backpanel and screws. Use the test procedures as described in the Installation and diagnostics chapter to verify the change. Do not forget to reconnect the power adapter.
