THE TALES BEHIND THE SALES
Behind
every amazing company is an
extraordinary story to tell.
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 16, 2014 SUPPLEMENT TO THE BULLETIN PUBLISHED BY LILLIE SUBURBAN NEWSPAPERS, INC.
PJW Automotive www.pjwauto.com
The recent economy forced many
folks to put off routine mainte-
nance on still usable vehicles, PJW
Automotive owner Pat Whelan says,
but now its time to catch up.
Its a wise idea to maintain older
vehicles and keep them on the road.
For many, its the most economical
path, when compared to a monthly
car payment, with the increased taxes
and insurance premiums, Whelan
points out.
Budget for the
life of your vehicle
Beware the loss leaders, Whelan
cautions. If the shops that adver-
tise the $20 oil change did nothing
else, theyd be out of business in a
year. They will find other work that
needs to be done, says Whelan.
PJW Automotive, located in New
Brighton just a half-mile north of
Beisswengers on Old Highway 8,
keeps a detailed record of every vehi-
cles repairs, and its technicians will
always be honest about what needs
to be fixed immediately and what can
wait, Whelan says. Well take care
of your vehicle in the most affordable
way possible.
Either service adviser Mike
London, a 15-year PJW Auto veteran,
or owner Pat Whelan, with 34 years
in the business, can best advise you
on what needs to be done so you
dont have to tackle that scary, 300-
page owners manual on your own.
Just bring your vehicle in car or
light truck, American made or import
a couple of times a year for a thor-
ough courtesy inspection.
Preventive maintenance
is key
The owners manual is the
only part of a vehicle thats never
touched, Whelan says with a smile,
before turning serious. Pay attention
to the dashboard warning lights; they
are there for a reason, he says. They
transmit valuable information that
will let you know when your vehicle
is misbehaving. Get it taken care of
and you may very well avoid being
stranded and towed.
PJW Automotive has the same
level of diagnostic equipment as any
Ford or General Motors dealership
in the Twin City area, Whelan notes,
and now has full-wheel alignment
capabilities as well.
Mechanics at PJW Automotive are
ASE-certified and receive re-certifi-
cation each year through classes and
web-based training.
The 34-year-old shop is active in
the community, too. From Free2B,
Inc., a program that supplies free
car repair to needy families, to spon-
soring teams in the Irondale Youth
Hockey Association, Whelan rec-
ognizes the importance of giv-
ing back. Its a good commu-
nity to be a part of, he says.
A bright, spacious waiting
area, complete with bever-
ages, Wi-Fi, even a small
male Pomeranian named
Max, are there to entertain
you should you care to wait
while your vehicle is being
serviced. And beginning
this spring, bicycles from
CARS Bike Shop nearby
will be available at PJW
Auto so you can go for a ride while
technicians get your vehicle ready
for the road.

Chandler Place www.chandlerplacesenior.com
Step inside and feel the warmth
and welcome of one of Chandler
Places newly renovated apart-
ments. Elegant hardwood floors,
bright open and airy living room
space accented with stylish crown
molding are but a few of the spec-
tacular new features spearheading
Chandlers design.
Chandler has been a fixture in
St. Anthony Village since 1986
defined by a reputation for excel-
lence and compassionate care, and
because quality matters, no detail
has been overlooked in these new
and improved apartments. Corian
countertops adorn rich wood cabi-
nets, and modern appliances softly
lit by new fixtures and cabinet
lighting really bring these apart-
ments to life.
That is not all, coming this
summer Chandler will redefine its
residents dining experience. Fine
dining with chef-prepared meals
offered any time between 7AM
and 7PM are the cornerstone of
this new program. Chandler will
offer meals made to order from a
generous menu, or better yet, chal-
lenge the chef and order off the
menu or a heart healthy
special!
Chandler Place
is part of the St.
Anthony Senior
Living Campus
offering a contin-
uum of care. For
residents needing
memory care there
is Pearl Garden, and
if ones require reha-
bilitation or long term
care there is St. Anthony
Health Center. In March 2014
St. Anthony Health Center will
be unveiling its fully remodeled
Therapy Gym. This state of the
art therapy space will offer the full
complement of therapeutic inter-
ventions 6 days a week. Those
recovering from elective surgery or
getting back on track after a recent
hospitalization can make the most
of their recovery by utilizing our
new modern equipment, full func-
tion kitchen and private treatment
rooms filled with natural light and
a beautiful water feature.
In 2013 Chandler Place
received the Silver Achievement
in Quality award for outstanding
performance in the health care
profession. The year before, they
received the Bronze Award. These
awards are presented through the
National Quality Award program,
presented by the American Health
Care Association and the National
Center for Assisted Living
(AHCA/NCAL).
Chandler Place is one of only
three facilities in Minnesota
and 50 throughout the nation to
receive the Silver Award last year.
This program requires a facility to
reach their bronze level of excel-
lence before working toward their
Silver Award.
Ask a Chandler Place staff
and they will have a
hard time telling you
whether they are
more proud of their
silver award or the
fact that they are a
6 time recipient of
The Readers Choice
award for Best
Assisted Living Home
from the Bulletin.

Since 1975, when Mike and
Jane Lund first opened Fairway
Collision and Automotive, the
company has built a reputation
for quality work and strong cus-
tomer service while also finding
time to play a vital role in civic
life in Vadnais Heights.
That commitment to the
community inspired the staff at
Fairway to begin working with
Lifeworks, a company that helps
people with disabilities find
jobs. Fairway currently employs
one person through Lifeworks,
and is in the process of hiring
another.
We believe very strongly in
serving the community, Pam
Caruth says.
With Mike and Jane enjoying
retirement after decades of hard
work, the business is now run
by their three children Pam
Caruth, and twin brothers Kevin
and Cary Lund. All three began
working at the family business
when they were in high school.
But the family bonds dont
end there. Collin Lund has
taken over as parts manager,
becoming the third generation
to work at Fairway Collision and
Automotive, and Connor Lund
recently joined the team to
assist in the estimating depart-
ment.
Its the fair way
The family named their
business for two reasons: First,
because it fit within their phi-
losophy of doing business the
fair way, and second, because
the 125 E. County Road F loca-
tion was at one time a three-
hole golf course.
As its name suggests, body
work is a part of the business
and the company has always
been very quick to embrace
and utilize emerging technolo-
gies. Things like paintless dent
repair offer customers an effec-
tive and affordable way to get
rid of dings, dents and hailstone
marks.
Just how good is the work
at Fairway Collision and
Automotive? All body-dam-
age repairs are covered by a
Guarantee for Life policy for
as long as a customer owns the
car.
Our customers are very loyal,
I would say over 95% come back
to us. so we always try to do
things that reward their loyalty
to us, Pam says.
And dont forget, if youre
getting work done at Fairway
and your insurance doesnt cover
the cost of a rental car, they
have vehicles available for just
$10 per day.
When it comes to making life
as easy as possible for their cus-
tomers, Fairway also offers: tow-
ing with their own tow truck,
mobile estimates, free pickup
and delivery, shuttle service, and
a heated drive-thru estimating
bay.
While Fairway can handle
any body repair tasks, its much
more than a mere body shop.
With two full-time mechanics
on staff, customers can drop off
their vehicle for an oil change,
brake repair or replacement, or
even an engine replacement.
We truly are your one-stop-
shop, Pam says. Our reputa-
tion for comprehensive and
high-quality work is what has
kept us going for all these years.
Fairway Collision and Automotive:
Much more than just a body shop
Though it has a long-established reputation for quality body repair, Fairway also
has on staff two full-time mechanics, who can handle any repair task from oil
changes to engine replacements.
Fairway, with its embrace of the latest and best technologies, has the perfect
equipment to give your car a paint job that makes it look like new, while adhering
to the highest environmental standards.

Cardinal Pointe of Maplewood www.cardinalpte.com
Tired of snow shoveling
and yard work, Carl and
Lila Bakken sold their sin-
gle-family home 18 months
ago and became shareown-
er-members of Cardinal
Pointe of Maplewood Senior
Cooperative. We invested
the remaining proceeds
from the sale of the house
into our personal portfolio,
said Carl. Weve already
earned enough from the
investments to finance a trip
to Europe.
Located in a serene,
country-like setting at
the northwestern edge
of Maplewood, Cardinal
Pointe offers 108 spacious
homes for singles and cou-
ples, age 55 and older.
As a limited-equity hous-
ing cooperative, members
of Cardinal Pointe buy in
to the collective mortgage
through a one-time share;
the cost of which is based
on the square footage of
the floor plan selected from
among nine available plans.
An average share costs sig-
nificantly less than a com-
parable condominium or
townhouse. Cardinal Pointe
members also gain 2% lim-
ited equity annually, and
if they move and sell their
share, they are guaranteed
the amount originally paid
plus limited equity earned.
There are also additional
tax benefits for cooperative
members.
Why spend $250,000
on a home when you can
spend a fraction of that?
asks Jack Gibbons, a mem-
ber of Cardinal Pointe of
Maplewood.
Each home features a
full kitchen that includes
a range, refrigerator, dish-
washer, microwave and gar-
bage disposal. Comfortable
one and two bedroom
floor plans feature walk-in
closets, washer and dryer
and balconies or patios.
Community-wide ameni-
ties include a community
room, private dining room,
sunroom, guest room suite,
library, exercise room, work-
shop, craft room, game
room and heated under-
ground parking with a free
car wash stall.
Cardinal Pointe is con-
veniently located near
St. Johns Hospital, the
Maplewood Mall, a Ramsey
County Library and Costco
as well as bike trails, parks
and a wide variety of res-
taurants.
In addition to all the ben-
efits of homeownership,
Cardinal Pointe members
enjoy maintenance-free liv-
ing. The reasonable monthly
fee covers exterior and
interior maintenance, heat,
water, trash removal, phone,
television and an array of
amenities. The few addi-
tional home-related costs
are electricity, internet and
homeowners insurance,
which members pay directly
to providers.
Members elect a gov-
erning board to oversee
the cooperative. Members
are also involved in the
Cardinal Pointe community
through committees dedicat-
ed to social events, finance,
marketing, flowers, interiors
and property upkeep.
People can be as active
as they want notes 14-year
member Mary Lessard.
Community culture and
daily life are determined by
the members of Cardinal
Pointe with the support of
professional management
by Presbyterian Homes &
Services. If they need or
choose a different level of
care, members also have
priority access to the liv-
ing options and services
of Presbyterian Homes 32

Allstate Insurance Mary Toske www.allstateagencies.com/Marytoske
...Very good hands,
actually, with agent Mary
Toske and her husband
Troy, and really, the whole
knowledgeable staff at
the Allstate agency on
County Highway 10, next to
Dominos Pizza.
Mary, who has lived in
Mounds View for the past
nine years, can be your
local connection for all your
familys insurance needs,
whether its for your home,
vehicle, boat or life. And
she can even help with
other financial services,
such as retirement plan-
ning.
The Toskes can handle
your business insurance
needs, too. A recent addi-
tion to the Allstate offerings
is fleet coverage. The more
vehicles your business bun-
dles in a policy, the lower
the cost for each.
That small-town touch
Growing up in Hinckley,
Mary put herself through
college by working as a cus-
tomer service representative
in the insurance industry,
enhancing her small-town
values. I fell in love with
the business, she says.
And then in 2012, after just
six months with Allstate,
she received the Rising Star
Award for the companys
Midwest Region. The award
is based on several factors
including customer reten-
tion. Building relation-
ships and taking care of
my clients is the best part
of my job, Mary says. It
gives me great pride.
And for those clients
who feel more comfortable
speaking Spanish, customer
service representative Maria
is fluent in the language.
Discounts all
over the place
In addition to the typical
discount for bundling auto
and property coverage,
Allstate is the only insur-
ance company that offers
a further discount if you
add life insurance. And you
could save even more with
an off-road safety course.
Should you to happen
to get a traffic ticket or if
you are in an accident, with
Allstate youll still have
your auto insurance. The
company accepts more risk,
and is more lenient with
aggressive drivers, Mary
says. Ask us about the
Accident Forgiveness waiv-
er, as well as the safe driver
bonus which puts cash in
your pocket.
The Toskes believe in giv-
ing back to their community
through volunteer work as
well, whether its participat-
ing in Feed My Starving
Children efforts or teach-
ing a safe driving course
at Irondale High School as
Mary continues to do.
The personal touch
Check out the Toske
Agency, open until 6 p.m.
Monday through Thursday
and Friday until 5,
Saturdays by appointment,
and theyll even make
house calls!
The insurance business
is always changing, Mary
says. Give us a call to
learn whats new. You are
not just a number, you are
our reason for being here,
and you know youll be
taken care of!

For the dedicated staff at Holcomb-
Henry-Boom-Purcell Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, providing comfort to
families who have just lost a loved one is
a top priority.
We like to treat every family as if
they were our very own, says Richard
Purcell, who owns the business with his
wife Sharon.
The funeral home staff also works
with families to offer reasonable pricing
for their services and recently received
a top ranking from the Twin Cities
Consumer Checkbook for disclosing cost
to clients early in their planning process.
The very best doesnt have to cost
you more, in fact, it will probably cost
you less, Purcell says.
Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell also
topped the charts with superior ratings in
the Twin Cities Consumer Checkbook
among funeral homes throughout the
metro area in overall performance,
proper service, pleasantness of staff and
providing advice on service options and
costs.
The fact that the funeral home
received such positive ratings across the
board is a testament to Holcomb-Henry-
Boom-Purcell offering a full range of ser-
vices from trusted professionals, starting
with the family who founded the business
in 1916.
The funeral home opened that year in
St. Paul and a second mortuary was built
in Shoreview in 1993.
Purcell says the staff includes licensed
morticians, who graduated from the
University of Minnesota with degrees in
mortuary science. Theyre committed
to helping customers with their funeral-
planning needs at affordable prices.
Clients can choose to have memo-
rial services and receptions honoring
their loved ones at either location and
Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell will
coordinate burial or cremation services
as well, Purcell adds.
The staff can also oversee all the
arrangements for funeral services at any
church in the area.
The funeral home has the technol-
ogy to accommodate the wishes of cli-
ents who would like to remember their
loved ones with music, photographs or a
video tribute.
Purcell says past services have fea-
tured everything from Dixieland bands
to harp solos to highlight their clients
personal memories of their loved ones.
We try to accommodate any request
a family makes to reflect, honor and
celebrate their loved ones life, Purcell
says. Personalization is a big part of
that.
In response to consumer demands,
Purcell adds that families choosing
cremation may opt to have a funeral or
memorial service with a viewing of their
loved ones body present, then the cre-
mation can take place after the service.
This can be done at the funeral home or
at the familys church.
He finds this option is becoming
more common, especially when clients
know out-of-town relatives and friends
will be attending the service, Purcell
says.
Most importantly, all the options for
clients to consider are available at one
location to provide them with ease and
comfort in an already difficult situation.
Many families are choosing to have
receptions at the funeral home so that
people can socialize and enjoy a catered
meal after the funeral or memorial ser-
vice. A list of professional caterers is
available upon request.
We try to be a resource for families
as far as being a place where they can
gather options, and then of course the
decision is ultimately the families to
decide what type of service they want
and then we make sure its carried
through, Purcell says.
Comfort and care at
Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell
The staff at Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell are dedicated to providing personalized service to families. Pictured from left to right
are Lynne Schriver-Sheedy, John Locke, owners Richard and Sharon Purcell, Daniel Grubisch and Donna Dvorak.
Our arrangements come in all shapes and sizes.
We believe a service should be as individual as the
individual. Thats why we respect the choice of cremation
as much as the choice of traditional burial. Whichever
you choose, your options are far from limited. In fact, both
allow for the same variety of services. No matter what
you preferences, you can count on us for choices.

A mechanical whirring fre-
quently fills the back room of
Georges Shoes & Repair in
Arden Hills, as three family
members take turns stitching,
grinding and polishing. They
refurbish a wide variety of leather
goods from a worn pair of work
boots to a fraying baseball glove.
Theres so many things you
can fix, owner Ron George says.
Is it worth it? Bring it in and
well tell you.
Cobblings been the George
familys business since 1905, and
the shoe store and repair shop
recently celebrated 50 years
in the northern suburbs. The
Georges sell well-made shoes,
socks and accessories and revital-
ize and customize footwear, hand-
bags and whatever else can be
saved with a little leather, a few
stitches or a new sole.
Theyve cleaned off winter
salt stains, stretched the calves
of leather boots, added Vibram
soles to woven shoes to get them
winter-ready and even restored a
cherished pair of womens shoes
after a dog chose them as a chew
toy.
But if something a customer
brings in is beyond repair, Ron
has no problem admitting it.
We like to tell them exactly
what theyre getting, he explains.
We dont like surprises. And we
like to be upfront.
Rons father moved the business
from West St. Paul in 1963. Born
into the craft, Ron explored other
trades for a while, but eventually
came back to shoes in the 1970s.
He takes pride in his busi-
ness and takes care to make his
customers happy. Being a family
business, its personal, says Ron.
I like taking something and mak-
ing it better. The father of fives
getting ready to retire and hand
down the business to two of his
children, Melissa and Luke.
The family knows people value
what they put on their feet, and
Georges wants to make their
footwear last. They even have a
24-hour drop box for repairs.
We turn your old friends back
into new friends, adds Luke.
Their national customer base
includes some big names. Theyve
done Nordstroms repairs since
1992, fixed bejeweled boots for
Madonnas tour in 2012 and
recently shipped a shine box to an
Olympic speed-skater.
On the retail side, the Georges
make friends.
We like to have good rela-
tionships with our customers,
says Melissa. Their varied selec-
tion includes shine boxes that
Ron often makes himself, and
they offer many brands of foot-
wear, including Minnetonka
Moccasins, UGG, Dansko and
Merrell. Georges is an authorized
Birkenstock repair location, and
half of the back wall and a dis-
play are dedicated to the popular
Smartwool socks. Also available:
Beautiful Leather Goods coin
purses, shoe polish and other
accessories.
The Georges also like to do
good in the community. Theyve
donated about 1,000 pairs of shoes
annually to Soles 4 Souls and gave
to Josephs Coat, a local non-prof-
it that offers clothing, household
items and hygiene products to
those in need.
Whether youre looking for
something new or hoping to save
something old, stop by Georges
Shoes and Repair. Chances are
youll find more knowledge,
variety and experience than you
expected just as other loyal
customers have.

Minnesota Oncology www.mnoncology.com
Cancer is a very frightening
diagnosis, and I couldnt imag-
ine facing it without Minnesota
Oncology on my care team,
says T. Harold, a 57-year-old
cancer survivor from Lake
Elmo.
Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin
lymphoma in 2007, he says the
experienced oncologists and
support staff led the way on
my successful treatment and
recovery.
When his illness was first
identified, he remembers feel-
ing as if his life had been turned
completely upside down.
He credits the caregivers at
Minnesota Oncology for helping
him with not only his physical
needs but his emotional ones as
well.
They took the time to
address all my fears and con-
cerns, and gave me a sense of
hopefulness, he recalls.
Michelle Quast, director of
operations, says the oncologists,
nurses and the non-clinical
staff strive every day to create
a welcoming atmosphere and
help patients and their families
through a difficult time.
As she walks down the hall-
ways of the comfortable, spa-
cious Fridley clinic, Quast says,
Oftentimes, people feel they
need to go to a big healthcare
institution, such as Mayo Clinic
or the University of Minnesota,
when theyve been diagnosed
with cancer or a blood disorder.
They may not realize their local
community has great Minnesota
Oncology clinics just minutes
from their homes.
Having an oncology facil-
ity just a short drive away can
be especially important when
patients feel ill after a chemo-
therapy treatment. The roads to
the clinic are familiar, the traffic
is lighter and the parking lots
have ample space. And when
patients need rides from fam-
ily members or neighbors, they
dont feel like they are burden-
ing others when they go to a
nearby clinic.
Convenience is just one of
the benefits when choosing one
of the 10 Minnesota Oncology
clinics located across the Twin
Cities metro area. Quast points
out that the Fridley clinic,
which is located near Unity
Hospital, received the top score
in the metro area for patient sat-
isfaction in a recent Minnesota
Community Measures survey.
A holistic approach
Minnesota Oncology clinics
offer a full circle of care and
integrative medicine services,
including cutting-edge cancer
treatments, clinical research tri-
als, genetic counseling, oncol-
ogy surgery, nutrition therapy,
pain management, patient
navigators, and licensed social
workers and patient advocates.
The expert physicians and
nurses customize treatment
plans for each patients specific
needs and illness. They also
participate in cancer research
and attend conferences with
other professionals to deter-
mine the latest and best treat-
ments of newly diagnosed
patients with cancer.
Complete,
coordinated care
The entire clinic staff aims
to treat the whole patient, and
not just the illness, emphasizes
Patty Thompson, manager of
the Maplewood clinic.
The social workers partner
with the patients and families,
and help evaluate psychologi-
cal and social needs. They help
patients find resources - every-
thing from finding jobs to help
with paying bills and securing
child care, Thompson says.
She notes the Maplewood
Clinic offers complete, coor-
dinated care with the medical
oncologists, radiation oncolo-
gists, hematologists, on-site
pharmacists and support
staff all working together in
the same building. For the
patients who need a full spec-
trum of oncology medical treat-
ment, they can get it here.
The Maplewood and Fridley
clinics offer support groups
for cancer patients, and refer
patients and their families to
appropriate programs and
resources in their communities.
As one is faced with all
the emotions and questions
involved in a diagnosis of
cancer, the staff at Minnesota
Oncology cares on a personal
level, says T. Harold. It was a
balanced concern for my mental
well being and my physical out-
comes.
Minnesota Oncology:
Caring, down to a science
Maplewood Cancer Center oncologist Bronagh Murphy, M.D., discusses treat-
ment with a patient.
Chemotherapy nurse Beth Berg comforts a patient during treatment.
Genetic counselor Anna Leininger, M.S., meets with a patient to discuss testing
options.

As he begins his 45th year
of auto service, Ted Brausen,
owner of Brausens Family
Repair Centers, says he wants
to thank customers for sup-
porting his family for two
generations, including loyal
customers who move away
but still keep coming back
for service.
His customers would prob-
ably like to thank him as
well for offering high-quality
service and products for their
automobiles all these years.
I am a good customer
and they treat me really
well, says Liz Ofstead of
Shoreview, a customer for
over 15 years. I like the
repairs and maintenance they
do, and theyre upfront about
telling me the cost, which is
as reasonable as any place.
They advise me if my tires
can last a few more months
and if its worth it to do cer-
tain repairs or just buy a new
car. ... And they offer me
rides.
Brausen started manag-
ing the Arden Hills busi-
ness when he was 17 and a
senior at Mounds View High
School after his father, Joe,
who started the business in
1969, could no longer do
so because of medical rea-
sons. Over the years, Ted
Brausen expanded the busi-
ness, adding service stations
in Roseville and Blaine,
and more recently, Blaine
Tire and Auto Center. He
offers full automotive ser-
vice, including brake repairs,
regular maintenance and tire
sales.
Brausens wife, Cheri,
does the bookkeeping while
his son, Jake, is a service
manager at the Arden Hills
location. And some staff
members have worked there
so long they are like family,
Brausen adds. Three employ-
ees have been with the
business for over 30 years,
including Dave Isakson, who
manages the Arden Hills
location and Mike Kelly, the
Roseville manager.
Customers are treated like
family as well, and are greet-
ed by name. Brausen also
offers courtesy rides in the
area and free loner cars when
a vehicle is in for major
repairs.
Brausen explains that in
addition to providing the
highest quality customer
service, his business is also
quality-driven when it comes
to repairs. Theres a lot of
difference in car parts. It
always intrigues me why peo-
ple would want the cheapest
tires and brakes and give up
a lot of safety and features
and noise problems by going
cheap. We put the right
parts in, not the cheapest,
and were honest about what
we sell people.
Ted notes customers can
make service appointments
on their website at www.
brausenauto.com. And his
computerized record-keeping
system makes it easy to keep
track of service done and ser-
vice needed.
In the 70s if a car could
make 100,000 miles, it was
amazing. Now you can go an
additional 100,000 miles if
your car is well maintained,
Brausen says. Its important
to have the right people
doing the maintenance, and
we are the right people. My
employees are paid well to
take care of you, and thats a
big reason people trust us.
Brausens quality keeps
customers coming back
