The Rosary: An Overview

When you hear the word “Rosary”, what usually comes into your mind is the
beaded bracelet that now comes in various sizes and designs. The term actually
pertains to both the set of prayer beads, somewhat similar to prayer beads used
by Buddhist monks, and a system of set prayers to be recited as the beads are
told.

The Rosary is a traditional popular devotion in the Roman Catholic Church. It

merges vocal (or silent) prayer and meditation—concentrated around sequences
of saying the Lord's Prayer followed by ten "Hail Mary" and a "Glory Be to the
Father". Each of these sequences is known as a decade.

Until the recent addition of five additional Mysteries by Pope John Paul II, the
Rosary had been prayed in three parts of five Mysteries distributed within the
week. At present, the Rosary can be prayed in four parts, one part each day,
with the "Mysteries" being rotated daily.

History of the Rosary

The Rosary came to replace the popular devotional practice that consisted of
reciting the 150 Psalms of the Bible in thirds or 50 at a time. Instead of the
Psalms, was replaced with the Angelic Salutation, commonly called the “Hail
Mary”. The 150 Our Fathers were recited. Over the course of the middle ages,
the Lord's Prayer prayers of the Rosary were set by the late 16th century.

In 1160 St Rosalia was buried with a string of prayer beads. 1214 marks the
traditional date of the legend of St Dominic's reception of the rosary from the
Virgin Mary. It was in the early 15th century that a Carthusian, Dominic of
Prussia, introduced the mysteries. But it was in 1569 that Pope Pius V
established the current form of the original 15 mysteries.

From the 16th to the early 20th century, there were no changes in the Rosary
until the mid-20th century when the addition of the Fatima Prayer became
popular.

In 1917, Our Lady of Fatima asks that the Fatima Prayer be added to the Rosary.
There were no other changes until 2002 when John Paul II proposed five new
Luminous Mysteries as an addition.

Our Lady’s Prayer

Many times in the past, the Mother of the Lord has appeared in various parts of
the world and asked for the recitation of the Rosary. She gave it to the world
centuries ago in an apparition. It is her favorite prayer for it is essentially a
meditation on the life of her Beloved Son. The Rosary is a combination of vocal
and mental prayer that entails a reflection on important events in the life of
Christ and His Mother.

8 SIMPLE STEPS TO PRAY THE ROSARY

Just like any other undertaking, you also have to prepare what you need when
praying the Rosary. Of course, you have to have a rosary bead and if you’re not
very familiar with the prayer, you may use a prayer book as a guide. When you
are ready to pray the Rosary, you can follow these 8 simple and easy steps:

A -- Make the Sign of the Cross and say the "Apostles'
Creed".

The Apostles' Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus
Christ His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the
Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He
ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father
Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe
in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

B -- Say the "Our Father".

The Our Father:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy
will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

C -- Say three "Hail Maries".

The Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with thee; blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for
us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

H -- Say the “Hail Holy Queen”.

Hail Holy Queen:

Hail! Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you
do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious
advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us
the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary!

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises
of Christ.

Prayer After The Rosary:

O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has
purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that,
meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through
the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

** To conclude the Rosary, make the Sign of the Cross.
