VAUDEVILLE EMPIRE
Look to the right of the screenshot above and you’ll see that Didi has managed
to get the merry-go-round working and is currently enjoying a ride, while Dawn
busies herself by staring down the camera lens with smouldering attitude. Now
imagine the scene in motion and see how the horses’ shadows cast across the
wider environment would move as they bob up and down, thus creating navigable,
scrolling platforms for Dawn to run and jump along. Expect puzzles to eventually
become a great deal more convoluted than that, and to be spending a long time
as a young girl wandering around streets and playhouses looking for 3D solutions
to 2D problems.
So far Contrast certainly looks inviting as well as involving, and will no doubt
be crammed with mysteries to discover and solve by, well, moving stuff around
and switching things on and off and running and jumping. You can expect a lot
of drama to come from such shadow play and for it to be an uneasy yet enticing
balance between the joyous and wonderful, and the nightmarish and threatening.
If the puzzles are designed with half the authority of the visuals, we could well
have another quirky Arcade winner.

Imagine if XCOM was run by the world’s toughest military types, who
also had an unstoppable penchant for cosplay that had been getting
more expressive in the years since the first alien invasion. Actually, you
don’t have to – just look at the four playable members of the EDF, each
one with their own favourite weapon set and ability.
The Fencer is heavily armed and can use heavy guns as well as a javelin
for when things get personal. The Wing Diver is an update of 2017’s Pale
Wing and so can fly with a jet pack. The Air Raider is able to summon
air raids, deploy health recovery generators and force shields, and the
Ranger can run about and shoot stuff. And all of them can be used at
once, in four-way co-op – two very special weapons apiece.
And you can forget the relative sobriety of Insect Armageddon – this
time EDF is going back to basics, just with even bigger, more destructive
weapons and greater customisability. What it won’t be doing is fighting
across a city that actually looks particularly pretty; cast in flat light and
looking a bit like a Blue Peter project, you and your friends would do it a
favour by bringing it all down.

AERO SMITHS
There are quite a few mistakes Insect Armageddon made that 2025 won’t
be repeating because Sandlot really does know what it’s doing, whereas
Vicious Cycle seemed to have taken a wild and incorrect guess. Examples:
the game will be lengthy, where last time it was overly short. There will be
more missions, enemies and a wider range of enemy types than ever before,
too. Don’t be that shocked, it’s not as if a great deal of power has been spent
rendering the city, but that’s just fine since you don’t join the EDF because
you’re a graphics whore; you do so because you’re a pure arcade gamer
who wants to see aliens, and the world, burn.
Aiding you on this noble quest will be a return to ludicrously powerful
weapons that don’t spend much time being absorbed into alien carapaces
before having a notable effect. We’re hoping for 2025 to be the Deadly
Premonition of co-op shooters, and to have all the greens and browns
of more Modern Warfare wiped away by a title that really doesn’t give a
damn about realism, because it remembers it just wants to be your new
favourite game. It won’t make a dick of sense, but we’re expecting to play
with our faces fixed in a smile.

HANDS ON
It’s on the ball…
FIFA 14
To justify FIFA 14 as an upgrade over
last year’s title will probably depend
on how much you play FIFA 13. Regular
players will easily pick up on how the
changes to FIFA 14 alter the way the
game can be played and, personal
bugbears aside, should find a far
more fluent and creative footballing
experience that’s well worth another
£40. Others who maybe have casual
kickabouts with a few friends once a
month could probably get by without
it – or at least hold fire for the Xbox
One version, which is almost certain to
come with all manner of new bells and
whistles attached. But even as a 360
title, FIFA 14 is looking like a supremely
playable farewell to the console.
