Acquire Activity Summative Assessment Each group of students will submit their Explorer Identity Card, to receive feedback from the teacher and gain completion marks. Formative Assessment Criteria: Students work and share ideas cooperatively as a group. Students extend personal knowledge through the ideas and information provided by the teacher and classmates. Application Activity Formative Assessment Criteria: Students demonstrate an understanding of the explorer Jacques Cartier and have achieved a deeper level of thinking about his voyages. Students demonstrate the ability to locate and trace areas on a map. Students work cooperatively as a group.

Students record information on an Explorers Identity Card and present their card to the class, using a world map to trace their voyages, and to answer questions about their life and voyages. Apply (15-20 minutes): KH-025 and KH-018 Collaborative groups of students create an In Search of the Northwest Passage, board game. Using a world map as the game board, students trace the routes of Jacques Cartiers voyages and design game cards indentifying their motivations, the country represented, challenges and accomplishments, and places they visited. Players advance in their voyages as they correctly answer questions.
