One of the most common
questions I receive from
seniors wanting to remain
at home is What is
the difference between
homecare and home
healthcare? Sure, they
sound a lot alike, but the
two are very different in
many ways. They are both
designed to help the sick,
elderly, or disabled but
their level of delivery and
their outcomes can differ.
Knowing the difference
between the two can help
you and your loved ones
determine what resources
are available to you, how the
services will be paid for, and
what you can expect from
each service.
The goal of homecare is
to make it possible for
people to remain at home
rather than use long-term
or institutional-based
nursing care. Homecare
agencies offer in home
assistance such as in
home aides, nursing care,
and sitter services for
extended periods of time.
Most patients that need
homecare services cannot
manage on their own and
need additional help in
the home that their family
cannot provide. Homecare
agencies can assist with
daily tasks such as bathing,
dressing, meal preparation,
medication reminders,
running errands, and light
house-keeping. This help
may be for long or short
periods and is completely
up to the patient to decide.
Homecare agencies charge
for their services by the hour
or accept long-term care
insurance, Medicaid, or VA
benets for payment. The
Veterans Administration
has an Aid and Attendance
benet plan for qualifying
homebound veterans.
Individuals with Medicaid
may qualify for home care
programs such as PCS
(Personal Care Services)
and CAP (Community
Alternative Program).
In contrast, Home
Healthcare agencies provide
nursing, physical therapy,
occupational therapy,
speech therapy, and social
work services through
Medicare and other types
of health insurance plans.
When a patient qualies for
nursing or therapy in their
home, he or she may also
receive the help of a home
health aide for non-medical
assistance like bathing
and dressing. However
these non-medical services
alone are not covered by
Medicare. Home Healthcare
is medically-focused care
which must be prescribed by
a physician. To qualify under
Medicare, a person must be
homebound, as dened very
specically by Medicare.
Medicare coverage is
triggered only by the need
for nursing or therapy.
The visits are intermittent
(meaning usually a few
times a week) and usually
last for one hour or less.
The duration is limited by
Medicare with most patients
achieving their home health
goals within a few weeks.
Regardless, whether you
need homecare or home
health care, the goal for the
two are the same - to help
you or your loved one live
more comfortably in the
comforts of home. Unifour

you navigate around the

THE BIG QUESTION.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
HOMECARE AND HOME HEALTHCARE?
5 SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH Hickory Morganton
Weight loss has
become a huge topic
with vast marketing
campaigns selling
many different ideas
and selling points.
This blog is an
attempt to simplify
the hype, clarify the
misinformation, and
return to common
sense. I am not a
medical professional
and do not claim to
be; the information
presented here is
intended to educate
and help us make
our own choices in
regards to our health.
The information
presented below is
what I have come
to understand after
15 years of learning
about health and my
own journey with
health, exercise and
weight.
1. Basic Attitude:
Eating to live or
living to eat? If
we are eating to live,
we eat the amount of
food that is needed
to sustain the body.
If we are living to eat,
we can eat and eat,
getting full at every
meal, and generally
consume much
more food than our
bodies need. Which
attitude do you live
by? This concept
shines light on trying
to lose weight by
following a diet,
versus establishing
a healthier lifestyle
pattern. Diets are
temporary and lead to
temporary weight loss
and gain. Lifestyle
changes shift our
patterns of eating and
living.
2. Food as Fuel:
Our amount of
activity in a day
determines how
much our bodies
need. In a car, the
engine uses as much
fuel as you allow into
it with the gas pedal.
If we are driving
on the interstate all
day, we will need
to refuel our cars a
couple times. If we
just drive across
town and back, we
likely wont need
to refuel that day at
all. Are our bodies
much different? If we
are very active one
day and burn 3,000
calories, then eating
3,000 calories is no
big deal. However,
if we are not very
active and eat 2,500
calories, but only
burn 500 that day,
guess where the extra
2,000 calories go?
Into our fuel tank!
This becomes added
weight when it is not
burned as fuel or
energy.
3. Our bodies
handle different
types of fuel in
different ways.
The three fuel types
are fats, carbs and
proteins. We will
also look at these
three types of fuel in
regards to their effect
on our blood sugar.
When the body is
active it uses more
sugar in the blood
to fuel the cells and
muscles of the body.
Fats: First off, fats
are not bad; in fact,
they can be good.
They have been given
a bad reputation
over and over again
with a belief that
they cause health
problems. Now,
there is a difference
between a healthy
fat (avocados and
sh oil, for example)
and unhealthy fats
(hydrogenated oils
like those in store-
bought donuts and
pastries) in regards
to our health. Fats
provide the steady
fuel source needed
to sustain the body;
when consumed, they
do not interfere with
the blood sugar level.
The body naturally
breaks down fat to
keep blood sugar at
healthy levels. This is
a slow process, so if
one is expending a lot
of energy in shorter

periods of time, carbs will
be needed to sustain blood
sugar levels.
Carbs: Our food has
become saturated with
carbohydrates. It is my
belief that this is a large part
of the weight gain problem
in our country. Carbs are
made out of sugar, or get
converted to sugar very
easily in our stomachs.
It doesnt matter if it is a
sugary drink or whole wheat
pasta; they go directly into
our blood sugar. If we eat
too many carbs without
enough activity, our blood
sugar goes up, and our
body has to produce more
insulin to bring blood sugar
levels back to a safe level
(Yes, blood sugar that is
too high is very dangerous
to our bodies). The excess
sugar gets turned into fat
that is held in our bodies
as future fuel. This cycle
of eating too many carbs,
blood sugar going up,
and production of excess
insulin is a large part of
eventual insulin resistance;
pre-diabetes and Type 2
diabetes that are plaguing
our country at large; as well
as weight gain.
Proteins: Proteins are
the building blocks of the
connective tissue in the
body, like the muscles. They
help regulate metabolism
and cell function. Proteins
have usually been the
shining star of diets; no
one usually nds anything
wrong with them. Like fats,
they do not increase blood
sugar immediately when
consumed, and they can
be broken down into sugar
when the body needs.
Some basic guidelines I
have come to follow as the
result of my understanding
of how our bodies work are:
1. Reduce excess
carbohydrate intake.
a) Drink water or
un-sweetened tea. Avoid
drinking sugary beverages;
our bodies do not need
them.
b) Skip the dessert; it is
full of excess carbs. Eating
dessert is about having a
pleasurable end to a meal.
Another pleasurable option
is to enjoy the meal in itself,
and enjoy the pleasure of a
healthier body.
c) Reducing carbs
may make you cranky and
crabby at rst. The body
is adjusting to burning a
new energy source, and
blood sugar levels may be
adjusting to this as well.
d) If you need a snack,
nd one that has a balance
of fats, carbs and protein.
For example, eating potato
chips or ice cream provides
limited nutrients but a high
amount of carbs, whereas
eating a healthy food bar
or a handful of almonds will
give you a nice balance of
energy to utilize.
2. Maintain
appropriate activity
levels that balance
exercise with your
food intake.
a) Great ways to start
exercising are walking for
one mile or more and going
to a yoga class.
3. Set a common-
sense goal.
a) Setting a goal for
weight loss may be what is
needed, but remember we
can also set goals for living
healthier and exercising
more, too. If setting a goal
just to lose weight doesnt
cut it, or it adds too much
pressure of failure, try a
different goal that may lead
you to a healthier you, and
maybe you will lose a few
pounds and feel great while
you are at it.
For more information I
recommend watching the
food documentary Fat
Head and reading the
book Wheat Belly. They
both present very useful
information on food in
general, and how blood
sugar and insulin work.

ADVANCED ILLNESS:
A STRATEGY OF CARE
Learning that you or a loved
one has been diagnosed
with an advanced illness
is a daunting prospect.
Its also an opportunity to
gather critical facts, tap into
community resources, and
take advantage of a team of
professional care providers.
The Power of
Teamwork
Hospice, for example, is
a set of services that can
be provided at home, in a
community facility, or in a
hospice house wherever
the patient prefers to reside.
Hospice care takes a team
approach, offering patients
the expertise of doctors,
nurses, social workers,
chaplains, and nursing
assistants. This team of
medical professionals
coordinates care on an
individual basis, promoting
a patients quality of life at a
time when its needed most.
Home Is Where the
Heart Is
Most commonly, hospice
care takes place in a
patients home. The
comforts of a familiar
environment help with the
challenges of advanced
illness and make it easier
to coordinate caregiving
when its provided by
family and friends. Should
those circumstances
prove difcult to maintain,
volunteers can be assigned
to help with personal
support and household
tasks. Along with assisting,
volunteers also uplift
families with a loving
presence.
Everyone Needs a
Break
In the case of extended or
acute illness, the strains
associated with caring
for a patient can become
overwhelming. When that
happens, hospice can
arrange for intermittent
breaks for caregivers.
Respite care, as its called,
allows a patient to stay in a
community facility for a set
amount of time while the
caregiver rests and takes
care of necessary tasks. At
the end of the period, the
patient returns home again,
and everyone is better
equipped to continue on.
Dont Forget to Plan
Coping with advanced
illness also offers an
opportunity to discuss
advance care planning.

With diagnosis in mind,
the patient is invited to
complete forms that
legally lay out wishes for
medical treatment, articial

the patient to have peace
of mind about what will
happen, and it allows the
family to carry out the plans
that their loved one desires.
As a result, advance
care planning frequently
prevents potential family
conicts and puts the focus
on care, connection, and
well-being.
A Season for
Everything
At the appropriate
time, hospice makes
counselors available to
help with issues of grief
and loss. This service
is especially welcome
when illness comes
unexpectedly and family
members are unprepared
for the outcome. Group
sessions and one-on-one
meetings are among the
many options available
for addressing grief and
promoting healing. After
all, while hospice focuses
rst on patient care, it
never forgets that an entire
community of loved ones is
in need of compassionate
support as well.

CUTTING THROUGH
THE CONFUSION
OF PALLIATIVE CARE
If you think you know what
palliative care is about, plan
to be surprised:
What exactly does
palliative care mean?
The word palliative comes
from Latin and means to
soothe or to relieve. The
idea behind palliative care
is to give patients better
quality of life by relieving
them of pain and suffering.
Is palliative care the
same as hospice?
Palliative care has
traditionally been
associated with end-of-life
care and a six-month life
expectancy. But, in recent
years, its use and scope
have widened dramatically.
Nowadays, palliative care
serves patients with curable
illnesses assisting them
on the journey to recovery
and helps patients with
chronic illnesses as well,
allowing them to enjoy life
even in the face of long-
term health conditions.
How is palliative
care different from
palliative medicine?
Palliative care typically
involves a patients nal
months of illness while
palliative medicine is more
closely tied to treatments
for both short-term
recuperation and ongoing
illness. Palliative medicine,
in effect, is the mature
version of palliative care,
serving a more diverse
cross-section of patients
and assisting them with all
the nuances of symptom
management and complex
medical decisions.
How is Life Transitions
connected to palliative
medicine?
Life Transitions is a mobile
medical practice whose care
is based on the principles of
palliative medicine. It treats
patients wherever they call
home, coming to them
rather than requiring them
to make an often-difcult trip
to a doctors ofce.
Who should be
considered for
palliative medicine?
Life Transitions palliative
medicine practice is
an excellent option for
people who have trouble
dealing with physical
exertion. Its especially
useful for managing needs
related to heart problems,
pneumonia, chronic
obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), and other
acute medical issues.
What should I expect
when I contact Life
Transitions?
Following an initial phone
conversation with a doctor
or nurse practitioner,
information is gathered at
a face-to-face meeting to
determine the potential
benets of a medical
regimen. If treatment is
advised, a program of
care is begun to best
meet patient needs. In
addition, Life Transitions
services are coordinated
with the patients primary
doctor. Theyre designed to
enhance overall care, not
replace an existing medical
relationship.
How do I pay for Life
Transitions?
Payment for Life Transitions
services is covered by
Medicare and Medicaid.
Private insurance
companies also support
this type of care, although
copays and deductibles do
apply. The Life Transitions
staff can help you navigate
your particular options.

ANTIBIOTICS DO NOT
TREAT INFECTIONS CAUSED BY VIRUSES
Continued on Pg. 11
During the winter months, many
people experience symptoms of
upper respiratory infections such as
sore throats, fever, sinus pressure,
runny nose and cough. While
bacterial infections can cause these
symptoms, they are usually caused
by viruses.
Antibiotics do not treat infections
caused by viruses. Because of
this, antibiotics for sore throats and
bronchitis are appropriate only about
10 percent of the time.
The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) lists antibiotic
resistance as one of the most critical
public health threats. Overuse
of antibiotics can cause serious
infections such as Methicillin-
Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) and
Clostridium difcile (C.dif).
Bronchitis symptoms include cough,
low-grade fever, chest discomfort
and fatigue. The cough may start
out non-productive but later it will
be productive of mucus. Treatment
for viral upper respiratory infections
focuses on symptoms relief.
Frequent hand washing and coughing
into your sleeve will help prevent
viral upper respiratory infections from
spreading to others.
Brian Bechtol
11 SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH Hickory Morganton
Bronchitis is inammation of
the airway mucus membranes.
About 90 percent of bronchitis is
viral and only about 10 percent
is bacterial. The CDC does not
recommend antibiotic treatment for
uncomplicated acute bronchitis.
A Harvard study shows that even
though it is proven that bronchitis
and sore throats are typically
caused by viruses, providers are
still prescribing antibiotics at a
rate of 73 percent and 60 percent
respectively.
Patients often demand antibiotics
for their upper respiratory
symptoms, said Bechtol. We try to
educate our patients but sometimes
the expectation for antibiotics is still
there.
Some insurance companies,
including Blue Cross/Blue Shield,
have gotten involved and have
started penalizing providers for
treating upper respiratory infections
such as bronchitis with antibiotics.
While I do not agree that insurance
companies should be making
medical decisions, I do understand
the push to restrict the overuse of
antibiotics, said Brian Bechtol,
physician assistant and CEO of
Urgent Care of Mountain View.
If you develop symptoms of
bronchitis or sore throat, you
should see your provider. Only he
or she will know if you truly need
antibiotics. He or she can talk to
you about treatment options. It
will take efforts from providers and
patients to stop inappropriate use of
antibiotics in the U.S.

Skin Health is determined
by a variety of factors that
include genetics, as well
as internal and external
factors that contribute to
the overall condition of our
skin. External factors like
pollution, weather, skin
care habits (or lack of them)
and misuse of products
can result in imbalances
in the oil to water ratio
that keeps skin at its
healthiest. Internal factors
like hormones; the foods,
chemicals or medications
we ingest; and factors like
stress and sleep are also
manifesting evidence in
our bodys largest organ,
the skin. Genetic factors
like oil production must be
managed and controlled,
while many skin conditions
can be corrected or
minimized with proper
skin care.
Many individuals struggle
with skin disorders
and conditions without
understanding how to best
care for their skin and the
changes it undergoes as
we age, as the seasons
change or as a result
of hormones, illness or
stress. Their perception
of their own skin may be
based solely on its current
appearance rather than on
a thorough skin analysis
to determine the skin type,
skin conditions, disorders,
Fitzpatrick type and Glogau
rating. It can be confusing
trying to select the correct
products and often
incorrect selections result in
wasted money and lack of
results.
Estheticians or Skin Care
Therapists are trained to
evaluate the skin and assist
in providing treatment and
skin care recommendations
to bring about balance
and return the skin to its
healthiest state. Just like
a personal trainer helps us
improve body and exercise
habits an esthetician helps
us to achieve skin care
results and maintain them
with proper home care.
ANEW VISION ACADEMY:
Institute of Skin and Spa
Sciences, endearingly
called AVA by its graduates
and current students, began
in 2010 as a dream to
provide esthetics education
in a spa-like environment,
to inspire individuals with
a passion for skin care,
and to provide skin care
services to the public that
exceed their expectations.
It doesnt matter what your
age; we as human beings
strive to improve ourselves
in many ways. As Oprah
Winfrey has said, It is
condence in our bodies,
minds and spirits that allows
us to keep looking for new
adventures, new directions
to grow in, and new lessons
to learn-which is what life
is all about. We all want to
look good on the outside
and feel good on the inside.
That can be achieved by
caring for ourselves body,
mind and spirit. Here at the
Academy we feel as though
we care for the clients who
come in seeking skin care
guidance, and also for
the students who come
in seeking enrichment,
new experiences and
an opportunity to grow
both personally and
professionally.
Individuals drawn to
esthetics are caring and
compassionate individuals
who often describe
themselves in the following
way: Im a people person.
They may explore esthetics
as a career right out of high
school, but the majority
come to it after working in
other elds. They sense a
long-stied urge to pursue
something that is both
rewarding and fun. Their
dreams of working in a
resort spa on the beaches
of the Caribbean or the
relaxing environment of
a day spa, knowing the
satisfaction of helping
patients in a medical spa,

SOUTHEAST PAIN CARE OFFERS
ADVANCED TREATMENT
FOR CHRONIC LOWER BACK PAIN
Southeast Pain Care
(SEPC), at Blue Ridge
HealthCare has two
locations in Valdese and
Hickory that are seeing
great results in alleviating
chronic pain without the
aid of drugs.
Spinal Cord Stimulation
(SCS) is a safe and
effective treatment option
that has changed the lives
of patients who suffer
from persistent pain in
their lower back and legs.
SCS is most effective
when a patient suffers
from neuropathic pain.
Examples of this type of
pain include degenerative
disc disease, Sciatica,
failed back surgery,
Shingles, Diabetic
Neuropathy and RSD.
The spinal cord stimulator
system consists of a
small implantable pulse
generator (or IPG) and
thin wires (leads) are
placed in the body. The
leads then deliver tiny
pulses to the nerves
that mask pain signals
as they travel to the
brain, producing a
tingling sensation, which
reduces the feeling of
pain. Doctors call it
paresthesia. You call it
relief.
Dr. Martin Evans, the
medical director at SEPC,
has seen long lasting pain
relief results, sometimes
lasting over 10 years.
Its amazing to see the
patients reaction after the
out-patient procedure.
They feel like they have
their life back again.
Our newest physician, Dr.
Jeffrey Peacock, explains
because stimulators
work in an area where
pain signals travel, and
can have to 32 points
of stimulations, we can
control each point,
allowing for more precise
pain targeting.
In addition to SCS
procedures, we specialize
in interventional pain
techniques including
nerve blocks, Epidural
steroid injections,
radiofrequency and
percutaneous discectomy.
My goal is to provide my
patients with non-surgical
options, while decreasing
or eliminating the amount
of pain medication
necessary to control their
pain, says Dr. Peacock.
Both Dr. Evans and
Dr. Peacock are double
board certied in
Anesthesiology and Pain
Management, as are all of
SEPCs providers.
Regardless of your
type of pain, we provide
a comprehensive
approach to managing
pain. Our staff provides
an environment where
patients dont feel judged
and we do our best to
improve their function and
make a real difference in
the patients life, explains
Dr. Evans.

BIRTH OF A BRAND
ORTHOSLEEVE
A NEW BRAND OF
WEARABLE PAIN RELIEF
HICKORY, NC Right
now, across the United
States, well over 50 million
people are dealing with
some form of chronic pain
due to conditions like
arthritis, plantar fasciitis,
and venous insufciency.
Untold millions more are
recovering from various
injuries to their muscles,
tendons, and joints. To
these millions of people,
relief is a number one
concern.
Dave Higgins, CEO of ING
Source, Inc. and inventor
of the Orthosleeve line of
compression products
wants to help.
When youre able to take
away someones pain,
Higgins says, youre
opening up a door for them.
They can do more, they can
enjoy more. Their entire life
improves through that one
simple act.
Higgins is a local
entrepreneur with decades
of experience working in
the specialty textiles and
hosiery industry. He is
known industry-wide as
the creator of the diabetic
sock market, an innovation
that has helped millions of
diabetics protect their feet
from the damaging effects
of diabetes.
Several years ago, while
working as a consultant to
textile manufacturers locally
and worldwide, Higgins
began developing an
idea that would eventually
become Orthosleeve.

I was working with
a number of different
manufacturers and retailers
in the specialty sock
market, among others,
and I noticed a real gap in
the options being made
available to the public,
Higgins says. On one
side, there were all manner
of compression socks and
stockings that doctors
could prescribe to help
people with circulation
issues, and on the other
side there were plenty
of big, bulky braces and
splints that could be used
to provide orthopedic
support. But many of the
same people needed both,
and they simply werent
willing or able to function
with the options available to
them.
In response to this
observation, Higgins went
to work developing a
concept that has evolved
into the patent pending
Compression Zone
Technology that forms the
heart of the Orthosleeve
brand.
Compression Zone
Technology basically
describes the way our
Orthosleeve compression
sleeves use several zones
of graduated compression
to combine the circulatory
benets of a compression
sock or stocking with the
medical grade support that
comes from a brace or
strap you might wear on a
weak or injured joint.
The result is a light,
comfortable sleeve of
moisture-wicking fabric
thats easy to put on and
take off, can be worn
comfortably under normal
clothes, and is safe to wear
for long periods without any
adverse side effects.
For one of those 50 million
Americans suffering from
chronic arthritis-related
pain, the idea of being
able to slip on a sleeve
rather than ght with tight
compression stockings can
spell relief to sore, aching
ngers too.
For older folks who should
be wearing compression
socks and stockings, but
who have a hard time
putting them on, Higgins
explains, an Orthosleeve
product is far easier to work
with. That means theyre
going to wear them more
often and stay safer as a
result.
Similarly, someone who
would like to enjoy the
support of a knee or elbow
brace to ease pain and
promote healing throughout
the day, but who cant wear
bulky and uncomfortable
braces while theyre
working, can slip on an
Orthosleeve and wear it
all day under their normal
clothes.
Its truly the best of both
worlds, Higgins says, pain
relief and comfort in one
wearable product.
It All Started With
Sore Feet
With over two million
Americans being treated
annually for plantar fasciitis,
this painful and debilitating
condition is one of the
leading causes of podiatric
consultation. While often
associated with runners, it
actually can affect anyone
who walks or stands on
their feet, which explains
why its so common.
The plantar fascia is a tough
band of tissue that connects
the heel bone to the toes,
stretching across the sole of
the foot and providing some
spring in each step. When
this ligament becomes
inamed due to overuse
or strain, it results in sharp
pain at the heel, along
the arch of the foot, and
sometimes into the lower
Achilles tendon.
My feet had become so
stiff and sore from plantar
fasciitis that I could barely
walk, recalls Rev. Lonny
McSherley It was very
painful.
Higgins decided in 2012 to
put his Compression Zone
Technology concept into
action by piloting a foot
sleeve designed to relieve
the pain of plantar fasciitis.
The FS6 Compression Foot
Sleeve was released, and
has since sold over a million
units worldwide.
I bought a pair of FS6
foot sleeves and within
three days, I noticed a
difference, in a month,
all my pain was gone,
continues, Rev. McSherley.
I think the success of the
FS6 foot sleeve is really
very simple, Higgins says,
it works.

Professional opinion agrees
with this assessment as
well.
The FS6 compression foot
sleeve provides graduated
compression across the
arch, foot and ankle at a
level to reduce edema and
the pain associated with
conditions such as Plantar
Fasciitis, Heel Spurs, and
other related conditions,
writes Dr. Roy H. Lidtke,
DPM, CPed, FACFAOM.
The technology behind
the FS6 is what makes
the difference. The FS6
contains six zones of
graduated compression
that surround the area most
effected by plantar fasciitis
to promote circulation
while providing a constant
gentle lifting pressure on
the plantar fascia and the
Achilles tendon. The result
is pain relief and prevention
of future are ups of this
painful condition.
Since plantar fasciitis is
particularly common among
runners and other athletes,
Higgins explains, it made
sense to partner with an
established force in the
performance socks market.
The folks at Feetures have
been great, and their
Plantar Fasciitis Sleeve
using FS6 technology has
been an incredibly popular
product.
At the same time, knowing
athletes arent the only ones
facing chronic heel pain as
a result of plantar fasciitis
and arch strain, a separate
agreement was reached
with national medical device
distributor Darco, which
is now dispensing FS6
Compression Foot Sleeves
through over 1000 podiatrist
ofces nationwide to meet
the overwhelming demand
from podiatry patients.
Orthosleeves
Leg Up on the
Competition
Once we started seeing
the incredible response to
the FS6 foot sleeve in the
marketplace, I knew the
Orthosleeve concept would
really resonate with the
public, Higgins continues,
so it just made sense to
consider other conditions
that people were suffering
from that Compression
Zone Technology could
help.
The results of that
brainstorming led next to
the CS6 Compression Calf
Sleeve.
The CS6 is an excellent
alternative to standard
compression stockings,
Higgins states, because it
provides all the circulatory
benets you need in a
sleeve thats comfortable
and easy to put on and take
off.
Patients who are prescribed
compression stockings are
usually prone to one of a

handful of conditions
that involve blood ow
to and from the lower
legs such as deep vein
thrombosis, chronic venous
insufciency, and edema
(swelling) in the legs.
The six graduated zones
of compression in the
CS6 Calf Sleeve help
to encourage efcient
circulation into and out
of the lower legs which
reduces swelling and helps
prevent blood clots or
pooling. Higgins explains.
And, as an added benet,
the improved circulation
and support the sleeve
provides to the calf muscle
and Achilles tendon helps
relieve pain associated
with other conditions like
Achilles tendonitis and shin
splints.
I am a university football
player and have been using
the CS6 calf sleeve during
practice for months. says
Brevard University student
Robbie McGee, citing an
additional benet of the calf
sleeves, It ts perfectly
and denitely helps with my
recovery.
Muscle recovery the
time it takes for muscles
used during training to be
pain free and ready for the
next workout is largely a
product of good circulation:
if the muscles receive plenty
of oxygen during training
and are kept free from lactic
acid and other uid buildup,
they recover far faster.
For athletes, and average
people interested in staying
healthy, this translates to
more comfortable and more
consistent exercise.
Referring to both the
CS6 and the FS6, Scott
McLelland, owner of the
McLelland Family Shoe
Store in Statesville, stated,
The Orthosleeve products
are perfect for both our
runners and our seniors.
Thats one thing I want
everyone to understand,
Higgins states, this is not
just a performance product
for the elite athlete. Its for
everyone who deals with
these conditions and wants
to stay active and healthy,
whether theyre running a
marathon, walking around
the block, or just moving
through their day.
The Leg Bones
Connected to the
Knee Bone...
The real beauty of the
Orthosleeve concept, says
Higgins, is that it can be
customized to accommodate
so many different parts
of the body and so many
different conditions.
As a result, the Orthosleeve
family of products is
undergoing rapid expansion
in an effort to address
pain and mobility issues
caused by all the various
conditions orthopedic and
compression products have
historically battled:
FS6 Compression Foot
Sleeve plantar fasciitis,
arch strain, heel spurs,
Achilles Tendonitis, general

and more to come!
Believe me, Higgins says,
Im proud and excited to
see a business idea take
off like this, and I couldnt
be happier about that. But
what really makes this entire
effort worthwhile is when
we hear from people who
have used an Orthosleeve
product and its truly
improved the quality of their
life. Nothing can compare
with that.

The likelihood of
experiencing a fall
increases with age and
with decline in health.
According to the National
Institute of Health (NIH)
website, one in three adults

reported that 1.6 million
adults visit emergency
rooms due to a fall and that
falls were the number one
cause of fractures (http://

A fall with or without

falls occur inside due to
condence in navigating

areas of your home where
your chances of falling are
increased signicantly. A
fall on stairs is very likely
to result in serious injury.
There is a variety of medical
equipment specically
designed to help you
reduce your risk of falling.
Bathrooms tend to be a
problematic area because
they are generally small or
even cramped, frequently
have a hard surface oor
covering and often have
water or liquid spills placing
you at risk for falling.
Economical solutions for
decreasing your risks are
the installation of grab bars
in bathtub and showers or
near toilets. For assistance
with bathing, you could
choose a shower chair or
transfer bench which allows
for safer transfers in and
out of the bathtub. When
choosing one of these
options, you could also
add a hand-held shower
to allow you to adjust your
water direction to best meet
your needs. Another simple
tactic for reducing your risk
would be to add a non-skid
surface to the bottom of
your bathtub or shower.
This can be accomplished
through the use of non-skid
peel and stick tape and
pads, or the use of a non-
skid bath mat.
Another option for reducing
your chances for falling
when bathing would be to
consider the installation of
an accessible shower or
bathtub. The primary benet
for having an accessible
shower is that the threshold
is lowered to keep you from
having to step up and over
it to get into the shower.
There are also some
showers that are specically
designed to allow you to
roll a shower wheelchair
into. An accessible bathtub
is also designed to allow
you to step into the tub
with minimal effort. These
come in a variety of choices
that include water jets to
help improve circulation
and relax muscles or joints.
Either of these options can
be installed in your existing
bathroom, many times
by simply replacing your
current standard bathtub
or shower. You will need to
have a professional installer
assist you in determining
the best selection for your
current bathroom structure
and personal needs.
Steps and stairs pose a
special risk. They should
always be kept clear of any
objects or clutter, be well lit
and have a ooring surface
in good repair. All steps and
stairs should have sturdy
hand rail or rails for support.
Sometimes the installation
of a ramp is the best
way to avoid the tripping
hazard of navigating stairs
and steps. Ramps are
available for a variety of
physical conditions and
are constructed of many
different materials and
designs. In some cases,
the best solution is to avoid
ambulating on the stairs by
utilizing a stair lift. Stair lifts
also come in a variety of
styles and can be designed
to t your specic stairways
in order to provide you with
a safe way to travel between
oors of your home.
The best method for how
to reduce your risk for falls
in your home is to take
a pro-active step toward
preventing them before
they occur. Many times
people wait until after a
fall before deciding to
implement safety strategies
for prevention. Often
it is too late because
the injury has already
occurred. Take measures
now to make your home
safer and protect your
independence. Your local
medical equipment supply
company personnel can
assist you in determining
the best solution to meet
your needs.

Hospice is a type of care

It can take place in a

often hospice care occurs
at home or wherever
the ill person feels most

Hospice care is usually

these may be better made

That is why living wills that

valuable. Decisions are

Hospice is a type of care and a

Rather than providing medication
to try to treat the illness, medicine
is offered to make a person more

Psychological therapy may also be

hospice is a concept that has
gradually evolved since the 11th

hospice care can trace their roots to
the 1950s and Dame Cicely Saunders,

Decide on the duration of care.
Hospice care generally lasts six
months. This enables a long stretch
of palliative care. Should you live
beyond the time period, hospice care
can continue. Studies have shown
that patients who receive hospice care
for at least 30 to 60 days gain greater
benet than those who are placed in
hospice only in their nal days.
Investigate nancial options for
hospice. Medicare and Medicaid
provide hospice coverage in 44 states.
Many private insurance plans have a
hospice benet as well. Understand
how payment is made to gure out if
private funding will be necessary.
Not all hospice programs are the
same. Certain core models of care are
followed by many hospice facilities,
but options vary. Hospice can provide
comfort in a persons nal days and
help sufferers better enjoy life and
time spent with loved ones in these
last days.

HOW TO KEEP HEALTHCARE COSTS
MANAGEABLE
The cost of living is on the
rise. Gas, groceries and
even healthcare continue to
become more expensive.
Healthcare, in particular,
has become a burden to
many people. The rising
costs of medical care and
prescriptions is making it
difcult for many people to
afford adequate healthcare.
Its hard not to be impacted
by the cost of healthcare,
which is on the rise for a
variety of reasons:
Reduced contributions
from employers into
employee healthcare plans;
Increased incidences of
medical malpractice suits,
which drive up doctors
insurance costs;
Greater involvement by
patients in their healthcare
choices, with more requests
for in-depth testing;
An aging population
requiring more medical
care, and
Increased innovations in
medical technology.

These factors have made it
challenging for many
people to keep healthcare
costs manageable. Yet,
there are ways to keep
healthcare expenses
affordable.
Compare plans. Figure out
which plan offers the biggest
bang for your buck. Although
one person in the relationship
may be the proverbial
breadwinner, that doesnt
mean his or her health
insurance plan is the best
option available. Compare
your options and choose the
best plan for you and your
family. If neither is sufcient,
decide if purchasing your
own insurance with a union
afliation or through a
different method would be
better.
Live a healthier lifestyle.
A sick individual will have
to pay more for healthcare.
Eat the right foods and
maintain a healthy weight.
Do not smoke or drink
alcohol to excess. Be sure
to include exercise in your
daily activities.
Check for discounts.
Some health plans offer
rebates to policy holders
who exercise regularly.
Each plan is different, but
check your policy for the
details.
Review the explanation
of benets. Explanation
of benets, or EOBs, are
statements provided by
your health insurance
provider. Make sure they
are accurate and void of
discrepancies. Report any
errors to the insurance
company, even if it means
singling out a physician
who may not be operating
truthfully.
Participate in incentive
programs. Some insurance
providers will offer
incentives, such as a points
program, for taking surveys
or taking part in health-
related activities.
Use in-network providers.
If you participate in a plan
that requires you use
network doctors, do so.
Otherwise you will have to
pay the balance of costs not
covered by the insurance
company. The same is said
for laboratories and testing
facilities. Follow the rules of
your plan.
Ask for generic
prescriptions. You can
save by going to certain
pharmacies within your
plan and also by using
generic prescriptions when
available.
Visit doctors regularly.
Staying healthy and being
informed of ailments early
on can prevent lengthy
hospital stays or more
in-depth testing and
treatments. Schedule
routine physicals and
screenings.
There are many different
ways to keep costs
associated with healthcare
down.

Nurses work hard. And
virtually all of that hard
work, from administering
medication to hanging
IVs to moving patients
and equipment, is done
standing up on hard
surfaces. So its no
surprise that many nurses
experience foot and back
pain after a long day -- or
night -- on the job.
Millions of people in
physically demanding
occupations experience
chronic back, hip and foot
pain. Repeated strain on
the feet, hips and back
not only causes pain but
also gradually reduces
the ability of muscles
to recuperate quickly.
As a result, healthcare
professionals such as
doctors, chiropractors and
massage therapists spend
countless hours treating
patients whose pain and
discomfort stem from job-
related injuries.
For nurses, these ailments
and injuries are difcult
to avoid. In fact, research
shows that nurses suffer
from lower back pain more
than people in any other
profession. The constant
physical demands of the
profession also prevent
nurses from getting enough
rest between shifts, which
can exacerbate both the
problem and the pain.
While treatments for foot,
hip and back pain can
be effective, nurses can
also take steps to prevent
strain in the rst place. The
following are a few proven
strategies for staying
healthy and injury-free on
the job.
Wear the right shoes.
Nurses need shoes
that t well and provide
proper support. Since it is
important to give shoes a
day to air out before being
worn again, its best to have
more than one pair of work
shoes. Full-time nurses
should replace their shoes
every six months.
Tend to your feet. Foot
problems, such as corns,
bunions and ingrown
toenails, are painful and can
sap ones energy, so treat
them early and often.
Stand up straight. Good
posture is one of the keys
to preventing both foot and
back pain. When the body
is in the correct position,
the vertebrae that form
the spine are aligned and
muscles and ligaments can
hold them in place without
strain. If necessary, various
types of posture supports
can help ensure that the
body is properly aligned
and supported properly.
Bend right. Always be
aware of how you move
your body. When lifting
equipment or moving
patients, give your back a
break. Instead, bend at your
knees and let your legs do
the work.
Think teamwork. If your
facility has a lift team, dont
hesitate to use it. If not,
work in pairs when lifting,
shifting or transferring
patients.
Turn, dont twist. Lifting
and twisting can strain the
lower back. When picking
up heavy equipment or
even a patient, plant your
feet rmly on the oor for
support. As you turn, be
sure to move both your feet
and your body.
Make a move. Holding
equipment or patients in
one place for a prolonged
period can put enormous
strain on the neck,
shoulders and back.
Whenever possible, ask
for help or relief. At the
very least, stretch out once
youre done.

POINTERS
FOR EXPECTING
PARENTS
Couples expecting their
rst child often nd that
the months leading up to
the birth of the baby are
an exciting time lled with
anticipation. But those
months are also a time for
expectant parents to make
some important decisions
regarding their nances.
Raising a child is an
expensive endeavor, one
that couples must start
preparing for the moment
they learn a baby is on the
way, if not earlier. Expecting
parents likely know their
lives are about to change,
and those changes must
extend to their nances. The
following are a few nancial
pointers for parents-to-be.
Determine your
necessary income. Many
couples have hypothetical
discussions regarding
children and their nances,
but until they receive the
news that a baby is on the
way, those conversations
have a way of being put
on the back burner. Now
that a baby is on the way,
couples need to revisit
those discussions, and
determining how much
income they need is a great
place to start. The dual-
income household has
become the norm in the
21st century, when the cost
of living has skyrocketed.
But couples must determine
if its in the familys best
interest for both parents to
keep working once their
child is born. The cost of
childcare is considerable,

and it may be in a familys
best interest for just one
parent to work until the
child reaches school age.
Consider your total income
as well as your nancial
obligations (i.e., mortgage,
car payments, etc.) and
then shop around for the
cost of childcare. If it makes
more sense to become a
single-income household,
even if its just for a few
years, then you will have
another important decision
to make.
Determine who is staying
home. Couples who have
decided that its in their
best interests to become a
single-income household
once their child is born
must decide who will be
staying home and who will
continue working. Its easy
to say the parent who is
earning the most should
continue working, but that
decision is not so black
and white. Consider the
cost of healthcare offered
by each of your employers.
Some healthcare plans
are signicantly more
affordable than others, and
this might weigh heavily on
your decision, especially if
both parents are earning
relatively similar incomes.
Another thing to consider is
each of your opportunities
for advancement at your
current company and within
your eld. Earning potential
should factor heavily
into the decision as to
which parent will continue
working, especially if
you plan to have another
child down the road. The
conversation as to who will
continue working should be
treated delicately.
Discuss your housing
needs. Couples who are
expecting a child often
feel this is a great time to
abandon apartment living
and buy a home of their
own. But chances are you
can comfortably manage to
live in your apartment for a
few more years after your
child is born. Those extra
years of apartment living
can give you the chance to
save more money so you
can afford a nicer home
in a better neighborhood
that boasts better schools.
Or apartment living for a
few more years may give
you more time to save
and place a larger down
payment on your home
down the road. The larger
the initial down payment,
the lower your monthly
mortgage payment, so
it might be in your best
interest to squirrel away a
few more dollars before you
go house hunting.
Establish a nancial
safety net. Many nancial
advisors suggest both
singles and couples have
between three to six
months income saved in
case of emergency, such as
a layoff or an accident that
prevents you from working.
This is especially important
for expecting couples, who
will soon have an additional
mouth to feed. This safety
net should be big enough
so you can comfortably
pay all of your bills,
including those for housing,
transportation and food,
for three to six months.
If saving that amount of
money is not realistic, save
as much as possible and
continue to do so once your
child is born.
Purchase life insurance.
Life insurance is perhaps
the most important
purchase expectant couples
can make once they learn
a baby is on the way. Its
understandable if young
couples without children
have no life insurance, but
that child on the way will be
relying on his or her parents
for nancial support for at
least the next 18 years. Life
insurance ensures you can
provide that support even if
something happens to both
you and your spouse.

The typical healthcare
patient has changed in
recent years. No longer are
individuals putting all of
their healthcare decisions
into the hands of nurses
and doctors. Patients are
more informed than ever
before and are interested in
taking a more active role in
their own care.
Thanks to the Internet,
people are able to access
information that, in the past,
was not easily available. A
few decades ago, medical
data may have been elusive
and lled with confusing
jargon the layperson might
not have understood
without a crash course in
biology. However, today
there are different Web
sites that clearly spell out
information about certain
illnesses and diseases. This
means that patients may no
longer be walking blindly
into appointments with
doctors.
Facing an illness is never
easy, and the decision-
making abilities could be
hampered by emotions and
the desire to improve as
quickly as possible. Patients
who do not have all of
the facts may have to rely
solely on the expertise of
caregivers and physicians
when making important
healthcare decisions. By
knowing the avenues of
information, a patient can
nd assistance with careful
decision-making.
While learning about
an ailment is important,
there are some things to
consider.
The Internet isnt
foolproof. Many online
medical sites are very
reliable and offer a wealth
of pertinent information.
They can be good starting
points when seeking out
information on a particular
condition. It is in your
best interest to visit sites
that are well-known and
monitored by respected
medical afliations. Other
sites may be peppered
with exaggerated claims or
misinformation. Therefore,
do not go by online
information alone.
Dont self-diagnose. It
can be easy to use the
Internet as a means to
narrowing down symptoms
and making assumptions
about what ailments you
may have. Instead of

using the Internet to self-
diagnose your condition,
leave the diagnosis up to
your doctor and rely on
online information after you
are diagnosed. This can
improve your understanding
of the condition and any
potential treatment options.
Seek other avenues of
information. You should
never hesitate to seek a
second opinion or go to a
published medical journal
to nd out more about
a condition. You have
rights as a patient to be
comfortable with the advice
doctors give and be as
involved in your treatment
as you want to be.
Online forums could
be more harm than help.
Many people turn to
online forums and blogs
to gain more insight into
particular diseases. While
these forums may be
good sources of support,
information published
on these sites could be
misleading, inaccurate or
unsafe. Before trying any
proposed treatment, it is
best to consult with your
doctor.
Having a general
knowledge of a medical
condition can enable
healthcare consumers
to make more informed
decisions about their
situations.

PHYSI CAL THERAPY:
A VITAL PART
OF TREATMENT AND RECOVERY
Illnesses of the
musculoskeletal system
can result in temporary loss
of mobility. But physical
therapy can help to prevent
those temporary problems
from becoming permanent.
The American Physical
Therapy Association says
physical therapists diagnose
and treat individuals of all
ages who have conditions
that limit their abilities to
perform functional activities.
Limitations in mobility may
result from injury or illness
or be present at birth.
Many physical therapists
develop a plan to reduce
pain and restore function
through various treatment
techniques with the ultimate
goal of restoring a patients
functional independence.
Physical therapists are
licensed healthcare
professionals who must
receive a degree from
an accredited physical
therapist program before
taking national licensure
exams that enable them to
open a practice or work in a
facility. The Bureau of Labor
Statistics predicts a 30
percent growth in physical
therapy careers through
2018, which is a rate better
than all other occupations.
Unemployment rates for
physical therapists are very
low, and they are in high
demand.
Physical therapists employ
various physical modalities
to help with certain
conditions. For example,
a patient may be asked to
perform various range-of-
motion exercises to restore
function to an injured
part of the body. Physical
therapists also may use
heat, cold and electrical
impulses to reduce pain and
stimulate muscle function.

Physical therapy sessions
frequently include some
form of massage as well.
While athletes frequently
rely on physical therapy as
they recover from injuries,
others can benet from
physical therapy as well. For
example, physical therapy
may work in conjunction
with other treatments for
cardiopulmonary disease.
The cardiopulmonary
system delivers oxygen
to active tissues, which
plays an important part
in movement. When the
cardiopulmonary system
is compromised, muscles
and other tissues may not
function as they should,
and certain exercises and
mobility therapies may be
needed. Physical therapists
also aid in improving
physical ailments related
to neurological diseases,
such as cerebral palsy,
multiple sclerosis, spinal
cord injuries, Parkinsons
disease, and Alzheimers
disease. Physical therapists
may also help treat poor
vision, poor balance and
paralysis.
Children who have learning
disabilities related to a
neurological or physical
condition may benet from
certain forms of physical
therapy. For example, vision
problems can compromise
academic performance, so
physical therapy that aims
to enhance visual tracking
skills and strengthen the
eyes in conjunction with
corrective lenses may help
youngsters, or even adult
students, perform better in
the classroom.
Very often physical therapy
will be recommended by
a general doctor or an
orthopedic surgeon as part
of recovery from a surgery
or a condition. The therapist
may work in conjunction
with another doctor to
provide a program
that helps foster a faster
and safe recovery. Physical
therapy tends to begin
gradually and resistance is
slowly built up as the body
strengthens. The length
of physical therapy will
depend on the condition
and the recommendation
of the therapist and doctors
overseeing the treatments.
