Available as integrated operating system, backup software, archiving software, replication software, and so on - as a virtual appliance. Available as non-integrated software. Microsoft DPM is primarily sold in this manner; Unitrends does not offer non-integrated software. Monitoring and management of data protection software, operating system, storage, server, and other solution components. Monitoring and management of multiple DPM servers (for Microsoft) or appliances (in the case of Unitrends) from a single user interface. Monitoring and management can be performed via the web. Microsoft DPM has a native Windows application for management of the DPM deployment and does not provide a webbased user interface to manage the DPM solution.

Limited
This includes not only Windows but VMware, Hyper-V, XenServer, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, and other operating systems. Microsoft DPM only protects Windows environments; Unitrends has integrated bare metal restore support for multiple operating systems in the physical and virtual environment.
Heterogeneous backup
Microsoft DPM only protects homogeneous Windows environments. Unitrends appliances protect over 100 different operating systems, applications, platforms and hypervisors.
Supports virtual and physical environments; Microsoft DPM only protects the Hyper-V virtual infrastructure whereas Unitrends protects VMware, Hyper-V and XenServer platforms.
Heterogeneous backup

Microsoft DPM only protects homogeneous Windows environments. Unitrends appliances protect over 100 different operating systems, applications, platforms and hypervisors.
Support for protecting NAS and SAN volumes. Microsoft DPM is a block based solution and does not support.

Supports agentless
Supports agentless-based protection where necessary; Unitrends supports agentless-based protection for VMware, NAS storage, and iSeries (AS400) environments.
Source Dduplication
Supports deduplication; DPM 2010 does not support deduplication; Unitrends supports target-based, byte-level (content-aware) deduplication.
Encryption
Grid-based scalability
At least AES-256 level encryption; Microsoft DPM supports encrypting data that is written to tape for long-term retention; Unitrends appliances encrypts data at-rest on the appliance as well as in-flight for off-site data protection. Backup servers (or appliances) are configured in a grid for interoperability, monitoring, and management.
Integrated symmetric and asymmetric replication Integrated peer-to-peer replication Integrated private cloud replication
Microsoft DPM and Unitrends both offer private and public cloud protection for disaster recovery. Cross replication between DPM servers (achieved with DPM chaining) or appliances in the case of Unitrends. Microsoft DPM offers site-to-site replication on a single-tenant basis; Unitrends offers integrated replication to off-site locations on a singletenant basis.
