What is Islamic and what is not Islamic?

Islam Q&A

Merriam Webster gives the following definition for the suffix ic: 1. having the character or form of 2. a. of or relating to b. related to, derived from, orcontaining 3. in the manner of, like that of, characteristic of 4. associated or dealing with 5. characterized by, affected with So when you say Islamic, it means
3 Bakhabar : March 2014

This post will clarify some misconceptions and make things clear, InshaaAllah.

It is only sad, I can say, that despite knowledge explosion and awareness of Islam through Friday speeches, books, videos, lectures, websites etc. many Muslims are still unaware of what constitutes something to be Islamic. How to look at a particular thing and then conclude whether it is Islamic or un-Islamic or simply Muslim?

What constitutes Islamic and what not? Some people are hopelessly ignorant about it!

Sometimes we see people in mosques arguing about dress. When you are at a mosque wearing a shirt and if it is tucked in or a T-shirt or a suit with neck-tie, sometimes some kurta-clad Muslim stares at you and tells you: why are you not wearing an Islamic dress? Some free advice is thrown at you: Next time, please dont come to mosque in this western style! Hello, come on. What is happening with we Muslims? Is wearing shirt not Islamic? Who told you that everything western is anti-Islamic? Or do you have any proof that only kurta-pyjama is Islamic?

something related to Islam, connected to Islam, characteristic of Islam or characterized by Islams beliefs or teachings.

Learning to read Quran is Is-

Some teachers and even parents segregate education and knowledge: Islamic knowledge and nonIslamic knowledge. Or Religious knowledge and worldly knowledge! DeeniTaleem and DunyawiTaleem!! Religious education and secular education!

Any dress that fulfills the Islamic etiquette of dressing has to be Islamic! It is as simple as it is. * Awrah: Covering the parts of the body that must be covered: navel to knees in case of men. Everything except the hands and face in case of women. * Modest clothing: The dress must not be see-through. It must not be tight-fitting. * Beauty: In order to look good, clothes must be neat and tidy. When wearing a T-shirt and a track pant fulfills the above criteria, what is the problem in wearing that?

Now, if some Muslim follows the traditions and customs of his village during his marriage, it will be said that he has adopted Muslim culture. You cannot call it as Islamic culture. * Offering salah, that is, Praying without a skull cap
4 Bakhabar : March 2014

Also, there is a need to understand and differentiate between Islamic culture and Muslim culture. Some examples will suffice, InshaaAllah. * During marriages in Asia, for example, Muslims spend huge amount of money and adopt so many ceremonies that are not sanctioned in Islam but has creeped into Muslim society through alien culture and influence.

If you assume or invent something and call it Islamic, you are either ignorant of Islamic teachings or having a biased approach to problems and situations. To be precise, you have not dyed yourself with the Dye of Allah!

What the Quran tells us to do, is Islamic. What the Quran tells us to refrain from, is Islamic. What the Prophet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam did is Islamic.

The matter is simple: Any purposeful education that brings benefit to the society will be Islamic. Whether it is conquering space or learning to write A B C or Alif Baa Taa.

He used to supplicate: O Allah! I seek from You beneficial knowledge. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from a knowledge that is of no use.

Did the Prophet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam ever compartmentalize knowledge? No, right? Did the Prophet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam not encourage archery in Masjid Nabawi? Did he ever prohibit his companions from acquiring wrestling skills in his masjid?

Our brothers are masters in shooting fatwas!! You dont know where to go and hit your head at such annoying and disgusting attitude!

lamic. Learning Mathematics or science is not Islamic!! Muddled arguments, anyway! During a discussion on Islamic education, someone reacted to me saying: What, Physical Education?! Astaghfirullah, its about games and sports, and how can that be Islamic?!!

Islam Q&A

May Allah give us the Tawfeeq and the Hidayah to understand things in a better way.Aameen. JazakallaahuKhayra for reading this post. Sal-lal-laahu Ala Muhammad, Sal-lal-laahu AlaihiwaSallam.

* A country that adopts all the injunctions of Quran and Shariah in legislation only can be called as Islamic country. Just by Muslim population or going by the Muslim name that you have kept for your country, you cannot call it as an Islamic country. It is just a Muslim country, thats it. Most of the Muslim countries say that their constitution abides by the Shariah, but then they are choosy in applying certain Islamic laws and ignore certain Islamic laws. How can you call such a country as Islamic?

(called Toopi in Urdu) is acceptable to Islam. If somebody insists on praying with the skull cap on, then he is only going by the societal culture, not Islamic culture.

Tread With Caution, Kejriwal ji

Nitin Gadkari has threatened to sue him, and Farooq Abdullah has said he would reply to the charge in a court of law. Vasan has issued an ultimatum that if Kejriwal does not retract within a stipulated time he
5 Bakhabar : March 2014

In this honour list the BJP leaders included are: Nitin Gadkari, B S Yedurappa, Anurag Thakur and NarendraModi, the last one for the same reason as Rahul Gandhispending too much on image building. The BJP has hit back by saying that Kejriwals name, too, should be included in the list.

His list includes leaders from the Congress Party, BJP, BSP, NCP, DMK, SP, NC and YSRC. The people in Kejriwals dock are: P. Chidambaram, VeerappaMoily, Pawan Kumar Bansal, KapilSibal, Kamal Nath, ShriprakashJaiswal, TarunGogoi, GK Vasan and Naveen Jindal. Rahul Gandhi has been added to the list as an afterthought, not for any precise act of corruption, but for spending too much money on building his own image.

The Aap and its chief ArvindKejriwal continue to be an enigma wrapped in mystery. Nobody can really know what are the implications of his announcing a list of corrupt politicians. On one hand his crusade against official corruption is a great service as our public life has become excruciatingly corrupt and any move that looks like helping us fight this menace is welcome. On the other his strategy to fight it creates more problems than solving it.

I By Dr. Mohammad ManzoorAlam I

Long years of social, political and legal work go into making a fair, graft-free order. Kejriwaljis ideas have a great potential for changing this country for the better, but he needs patient work, not counterproductive short-cuts Source: http://www.iosworld.org/

Countries that have achieved a high level of integrity in public life have done so only after a long struggle. Transparency, good governance, accountability and rule of law do not come as a result of sloganeering and with allegations-counter allegations.

From the experience of developed countries it is clear that a corruption-free society becomes viable only after a country reaches a per capita GDP level of about $6,000 a year. Below that level it is rare to find a corruption-free society. That means such a society is still a few years away.

The question to ask is whether this is the best way to deal with corruption. The clear answer is that corruption cannot be eliminated by making allegations and counter-allegations as in this case. A corruption-free society is built on institutions that ensure accountability, integrity, transparency and rule of law. As long as these are missing from public life, corruption is going to remain very much among us.

will be dragged to court. And, we have not heard the last on this issue.

Once a group of 50 people was attending a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and started giving each one a balloon.

Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker pen.

Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room.

Now these delegates were left in that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written, within 5 minutes.

Everyone was frantically searching for their name, colliding with eachother, pushing around others and there was utter chaos. At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon. Now each one was asked to randomaly select a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it.

Within minutes everyone had their own balloon. The speaker began--- This is exactly what's happening in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is. Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people... Give them their happiness and you will get your own happiness.

Another interesting area of research into the type of interven7 Bakhabar : March 2014

The fact remains however, that there is a need to objectively and accurately measure poverty. There has been considerable research into the question of how best to measure poverty. The most recent research in this regard has been undertaken under the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) by Sabina Alkire and James Foster. The duo have created a new method for measuring multidimensional poverty. The Alkire-Foster method identifies who is poor by considering the intensity of deprivations they suffer, and includes an aggregation method. The method is flexible and can be applied to measure poverty or wellbeing, target services or conditional cash transfers and for monitoring and evaluation.

I By Mohammed Obaidullah I akat is a distinct form of Islamic philanthropy guided by Shariah-stipulated rules of distribution. The rules clearly identify the poor and the needy as the most deserving in the society to whom zakat funds should flow. Further, the magnitude and intensity of poverty, accordingly to scholars, should have a direct relationship with the assistance to be provided through zakat. Note that traditionally Islamic scholars have permitted zakat flow into the hands of individuals with relatively higher standard of living as compared to the ultra-poor of today. Therefore, the issue is largely not a matter of permissibility but of efficiency in distribution of zakat to the poor.

SHOULD ZAKAT BE DISTRIBUTED AS UNCONDITIONAL CASH TRANSFERS (UCTS)?

In Depth

If this recent evidence is juxtaposed against the views of early and contemporary scholars, one finds an interesting match between the early Islamic scholarship and the most recent evidence available in conventional domain. Early scholars were inclined to insist on the unconditional nature of zakah payment (whether cash or kind) emphasizing the condition of tamleek or imparting owner-

tion that performs best in terms of impact on poverty involves a comparison between targeted services or conditional cash transfers and unconditional cash transfers. While many of the largest and best known cash transfer schemes attach conditions to the money beneficiaries receive (e.g. cash is paid on the condition that children go to school and get vaccinated), some recent experiments have experimented with unconditional cash transfers. The one that has caught the attention of the policy makers is GiveDirectly, a California-based NPO that uses mobile money technology to transfer cash directly from donors to some of East Africas poorest people. In an MIT study to evaluate the impact of UCTs, Haushofery and Shapiro (2013) found that recipients spent the cash on things such as food and healthcare, to replace thatched roofs with metal ones, buy livestock and invest in small businesses. It also found evidence to suggest the money reduced hunger and increased psychological wellbeing. It debunked the fundamental assumptions underlying conditional giving that the poor would waste the money given to them.

Given the clear evidence in favor of unconditional cash transfer over other forms of giving, will it lead to a change in the thinking of our Islamic economists? Or shall we say, the wheel has come full circle? [http://www.sadaqa.in]

ship of the zakah contribution to the beneficiary. As the new owner of the contribution, the beneficiary would have every right to determine how the money or asset would be used. Recent Islamic scholars however, seemed to favor the channeling of zakah into developmental projects in education, healthcare at a societal level relaxing the strict interpretation of tamleek. For example, a contemporary Islamic economist Shawki Ismail Shehata in a popular article published in Islamic Economic Studies (vol.1, No.2), journal of the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) writes zakah may be given to institutional bodies, taking care of the poor and the needy, in providing the public utilities and servicesany money spent on the education and medical treatment of the poor is deemed to have been spent on them and paid to them. Further, zakah may be paid in cash or in kind. Payment in kind includes the money spent for procuring tools and equipment and the like. In another work published by IRTI, noted Islamic economist Seif el-Din Tag el-Din dwells extensively on the concept of tamleek. Highlighting the limitations of physical capital goods transfer, he recommends the equities transfer alternative as a way to make the poor participate in and benefit from mega developmental projects.

Just Before She

2. We live this life for the next. I was living my life as a Muslim...praying and fasting, but I had somehow allowed my real goal in life to be swallowed by buying salad plates for my next dinner party, and trying to get free shipping on my next jcrew order, and finding pillows that popped against my cream sofa. In between being a consumer and entertaining myself to death, I let what really matters in my life slip away from me. If I was truly living my life for the Hereafter, I should not be so fearful of the future I had created for myself. The Quran says, "And this life of the world is nothing but a sport and a play; and as for the next abode, that most surely is the lifeif only they knew!" [29.64]
8 Bakhabar : March 2014

1. We are all going to die. The people who took the news of my disease calmly and those who panickedthey are going to die one day too. Death is one of the few realities we can be certain of in this life, and yet we somehow slip into thinking that we are exempt.

ister Rehab el Buri passed away on Sunday 6th of March 2011 at the age of 26. She died due to cancer after fighting a courageous battle against it. A section is pasted below from her blog to reflect upon and is really worth the two minute read: It took me about three days to accept my death. On the first day, as you read, my mind was in chaos. On the second day, I was numb. And on the third day, my husband and mother began talking sense to me, and I finally came to some important realizations:

These realizations, and the support of my mother, husband, his mother, my sisters, his sisters, my father, his father, my friends, and my community have helped me not merely cope with what I'm going through, but actually seek the reward of going through this trial, and try to sincerely accept what Allah wills for me. 4. Each day is a gift. Receiving this wake up call is such a blessing in that each day Allah grants me is an opportunity to do some more good and try to make up for some of the mistakes I made in the past. For some reason, the mornings are usually a little rough for me. I think it's just waking up from my dreams and realizing that I still have to live with this disease. But every morning I try to tell myself, "Alhamdulilah, I feel good today, what good can I do today?"

3. I am in the same boat as everyone else. None of us are given any guarantees in life. Our health, our wealth, and our families are trusts give to us by Allah- and they are His to take when He, in his infinite wisdom, deems fit. We all claim to believe this, but in practice we often falter. I don't know why I thought I could push the thought of death out of my mind for at least a good 30 or 40 years. Allah Ta'ala could claim any of us at any time. I am in the same boat as everyone else- I have no idea when my time is, but I should try to live everyday as if it is my last.

Brother lower your gaze

The story of a young man who had a habit of looking at women . This young man asked Sheik : I feel guilty about myself for a bad habit, i am unable to get rid off ! I cant stop myself from looking at girls in the market, what should I do?

Khabron ki Khabar
Seraj Akram - Agar BJP ne galti kiya he to uske liye muslims se moafi bhi mangne ko tayyar hain...Rajnath Singh Aajkal Muslim ko ahmaq samajh kar har koi dore dal raha he, koi secularism ka nara de raha he to koi communalism par dhoka dena chahta he, lekin afsos muslim aaj bhi behtar hikmat amli se aage barhne me nakam hain, kabhi ek se dhoka khate hain to dusri taraf chale jate hain, kabhi dusre se khate hain to tisre ki taraf chale jate hain...bilkul is shayr ki tarah...tu hai harjayi to apna bhi yahi taur sahi...tu nahi aur sahi aur nahi aur sahi.

Sheikh gave him a glass full of milk which was filled upto its edges and asked one of his student to accompany him to the market. He told his student to beat him in front of everyone if he spilled even a drop of milk. Ofcourse the young man managed to walk without spilling a drop of milk and returned to the sheikh. Sheikh asked : How many girls did u see on your way ??

The young man replied: I didnt see anyone around me as my concentration was only on the glass of milk because i was scared of getting beaten up in front of everyone if i spill milk.

Sheikh replied: The same is the case with a true Momin/Muslim. The true believer is afraid of ALLAH and shame on the day of resurrection if he commits a sin These believers protect themselves from committing sin as they are always focused on the judgement day !! Allah says in the Holy Quran: "tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things)." Surah Al Noor.

Metamorphosis of Guardianship into Parenthood : A Case of Sheer Bewilderment

have strong reason to believe that the recent judgment of SC pertaining to the adoption case for Muslims has completely ignored and failed to understand the stand of Islamic law. Such confused judgment will surely affect directly or indirectly the Islamic Personal Law which is a matter of serious concern.

In DEPTH

(The Recent SC Judgment on Adoption for a Muslim family) it whereas the biological father is a different person, will the present law accept both as fathers? If not, then why so is the case here?

If a person wants to have a permanent care of a child or become his/ her guardian, nothing is there to stop him to undertake such responsibility, rather such act of kindness will be appreciated but considering non- biological person to be a biological one or granting them the same status as that of a biological person is utterly illogical and legally unjustified to say the least. Nobody is preventing such guardians to gift their property or wealth to anybody else let alone an adopted child. If somebody says that somebody is my father and the person concerned accepts
10 Bakhabar : March 2014

The case of adoption and guardianship is very clear under Islamic law. Adoption is a different thing and considering or accepting a non-biological father, mother, son or daughter to be a biological ones or granting its status is completely a different thing. I am unable to comprehend that as to why the honourable judge of the Supreme Court completely failed to understand this stark difference even when the stand of Islamic law was very clear and there is not an iota of ambiguity in this respect.

The Mumbai-based lawyer has released the following terse note on

New Delhi, Feb. 21: Mr. Yusuf Hatim Muchhala, an eminent legal mind of the country, has classified the implications of the Supreme Court judgment of February regarding adoption of children by Muslim couples.

Mr. Y.H. Muchhalas note on SC Judgment on Adoption By IOS World <press.iosworld@gmail.com>

The concept of wilayat is also there under Islamic jurisprudence which specifically needs to be understood in this context. (Khalid Waheed Falahis reaction to the news Personal law can't stop Muslims from adopting children: Supreme Court published on NDTV website) Khalid Waheed Falahi is a PhD from AMU, belongs to Sheikhpura (Bihar) and works in Hyderabad for a research firm.

1. All India Muslim Personal Law Board contention that Right to adopt and of a child to be adopted cannot be declared as a Fundamental Right has been accepted by the Honble Supreme Court with due respect and consideration to the fact that conflicting beliefs and practices are prevailing in the country on this issue at this stage. The Honble Supreme Court has unequivocally observed that the faith / tradition based law must be respected and cannot be steamrolled by enacting Uniform Civil Code at this stage. The attempt of the Petitioner (Mrs. Shabnam Hashmi) to elevate the right to adopt and the right of a child to be adopted at the level of Fundamental Right has failed.

the judgment that clarifies many misgivings about it.

4. However, the Court has not given any directions to the Child Welfare Committee as requested by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board to the effect that before a child is certified to be free for adoption, the Child Welfare Committee in respect of a Muslim child or parents should explore the possibilities of providing protection and upbringing of such a child as per principles of Kafala.
11 Bakhabar : March 2014

3. The Honble Supreme Court has referred to Special Marriage Act, 1954 which has given such freedom of choice to every citizen either to marry as per the provisions of the Act or in accordance with the personal laws of the parties. Such optional civil code has been in existence since 1954. The Juvenile Justice Act, 2000 is another piece of legislation in the direction on the question of providing protection to and upbringing of neglected, destitute or surrendered children. These two Acts have never ever been challenged by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

2. Principles of personal law would always continue to govern any person who chooses to so submit himself to it and that the JJ Act, 2000 does not mandate any compulsive action by any prospective parent leaving such person with the liberty of accessing the provisions of the Act, if he so desires on to follow his own personal law. The Supreme Court in other words has given freedom of choice to select between personal law and statutory law to the concerned party.

Had the Petitioner succeeded, any principle of law which is contrary to Fundamental Right would have become null and void.

"Three years ago, when I was in class VII, I started to look for a solution to some of the problems faced by the operating systems used currently. I never imagined inventing an operating system," Afreed said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/guwahati/Guwahati-teenscripts-ReVo-lution/articleshow/30585775.cms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRO8OKAgTPE

Afreed is hopeful the ReVo BOOK will make help high-speed, uninterrupted performance. "Apart from domestic computing, the ReVo BOOK will be immensely beneficial in offices, banks, academic institutions and industries," the boy said.

At a time when most of his peers are aiming to do well in their board exams, Afreed is planning to promote the ReVo BOOK which, he claims, will dominate comparable products in the computer market. "Compared to the hard disks available, my microchip is four times faster, lasts longer and there is also no chance of losing data. Minimum power is required to run the ReVo BOOK and its portable size is a bonus," he said.

"Most computing devices use mechanical hard disk drives, flash memories and electronic disks to boot up operating systems, but my invention replaces both mechanical and electronic hard disks with a microchip, doubling speed and storage capacity," he said.

The ReVo BOOK is embedded with a microchip and a hybrid operating system, also Afreed's brainchild, named ReVo IX. The design of the computer system has been developed by a German based firm which took up the project after knowing about Afreed's innovation. He has already applied for a patent for the ReVo BOOK and is expecting to secure his rights soon.

If Afreed got enough financial assistance to supply the product to markets, he would taste greater success, said Siddharth Deb Nath, a scientist at Assam Science Technology and Environment Council.

GUWAHATI: In a move that can transform traditional computing devices, schoolboy Afreed Islam has successfully designed a virus-protected microchip-run computer system. So the man followed the water (in its course), and he found a man standing in his garden, using an instrument to direct this water in different directions *(to irrigate his garden). He said to him, O servant of Allah! What is your name? The man said So-an-so, the same name that he had heard in the clouds! Then the man asked him, O servant of Allah! Why are you asking me my name? But, if they lied, and hid (the defects of an item) then the blessings of their transaction are destroyed" [Muslim, # 3836]

And seek Forgiveness of Allh. Verily, Allh is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful [Surah Al-Muzammil, Verse 20] And We have appointed the night and the day as two Ayt (signs etc.). Then, We have obliterated the sign of the night (with darkness) while We have made the sign of the day illuminating, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of the years and the reckoning. KEJRIWAL TACTICS, lessons for Indian Muslims

he entire Indian community that Kejriwal is supposed to be representing as far as corruption in government ranks is concerned, was/is helpless in addressing the problem of how to make the Government accountable to their demands, especially when colossal amounts of public money were so ruthlessly siphoned off without any fear of reprisal from any law authority. Kejriwal first tried with Anna Hazare a dharna demanding Jan Lokpal bill. Entire political class questioned the locus standi of Kejriwal and Anna to dictate a law, which is supposed to be the monopoly of elected legislative bodies. Politicians openly asked that instead of disturbing peace on the streets, the protestors should try electoral route and come into assemblies and Parliament and then form their own cherished laws. While Anna dithered given his age, Kejriwal took the challenge and resolved to fight Delhi Assembly elections. Public across the board were so fed up with the corrupt politicians, that Kejriwal automatically received overwhelming response and unexpectedly secured 28 seats in assembly and later got to form the government. Kejriwals step by step progress towards political empowerment to root out corruption found a common strain of sympathy in across the board voters, regardless of all vote bank politics of caste-ism, religion, class, regionalism, economic strata. Sixty five years down the line, there is hardly any hope that the criminals in political oligarchy have any inclination to give even a minimum space for Muslims. We should have reached the point of frustration --- the Kejriwal moment of despair --- when we should collectively try to come forward as a united political force to cleanse the criminal system. We choose all those communal candidates that are the kingpin of the overt and covert communal and anti-Muslim movement as our target and see to it that they are not elected. This is most feasible and legal way to defeat our enemies through tactical and at times negative voting to help cleanse the system of the corrupt as well as communal. Kejriwal is at the moment not in a position to change or expand his partys agenda to include communalism to its mission to root out corruption. We will have to do this job ourselves, though with cooperation with other sympathizing political groups. Muslim vote bank does have great leverage in a vast number of constituencies, where even with give and take arrangements, Muslims can first see that their enemies are not elected. To counter both Congress and BJP, we may join hands with other clean and non-communal leadership to see that targeted candidates are not elected. They say there are nine ways to skin a cat. Like Kejriwal, let Muslim chose a small area for intense mobilization of their voters. A success in that small laboratory will give them further courage to expand their area of operation. Muslim political initiatives will be ruthlessly opposed by the targeted groups, just as Kejriwal is facing today. All political parties are ganging on him and his party, as all of them are neck deep in corruption. Muslim will have to be prepared for similar challenge. Myth of Clean Chit:

Gujarat Carnage and Narendra Modi

n a recently televised interview the Vice-President of Indian National Congress, Rahul Gandhi (Jan 2014) raised the storm when he said that some Congressmen might have been involved in 1984 Sikh Massacre and that Narendra Modi has a blame to take for the Gujarat carnage of 2002. There were multiple responses to this interview. Already Arvind Kejriwal had promised to set up SIT into Anti Sikh violence of 1984 even before elections. Now his Government seems to be taking it up more seriously and it is likely that a SIT will be formed to investigate the Delhi tragedy. One can say that it may be too late by now as lot of valuable evidence might have been lost or destroyed. Still whatever of process of law can be retrieved, should be saved and justice should be done to victims of Delhi. Two wrongs dont make a right. Violence against one religious community cant give justice to another religious community which has been wronged. On the same level to turn a blind eye to the atrocities on Muslim minorities in India because Hindus are being persecuted in Pakistan or Bangla Desh is totally inhuman and vice versa. Justice should be demanded for all religious minorities, in all the countries, all the time. Tolerating injustice at one place is like tolerating injustice everywhere. The tendency to flaunt Kashmiri pundits or anti Sikh massacre, after every talk of justice to violence victims of Gujarat or any other place is an attempt to deflect the attention from issue on hand.

Modi has been given clean chit by SIT in Gujarat and also by the court of law, by legal process. This is a false propaganda. Right from the beginning of Gujarat violence, the comments of National Human rights commission indict Modi for his role in orchestrating Gujarat Violence. Though Special Investigation team (SIT) commented that there is no case against Modi, in the findings of SIT, there has been a strong element which indicts Modi for his acts of commission and omission. The apologists of Modi will point that in Delhi the military was not called for three days, while forgetting that in Delhi violence was contained in three days and in Gujarat process of violence went on unabated till May 2002, starting from 27th February. This stoppage of violence in Gujarat could happen only when the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee sent K.P.S. Gill as the special officer to overlook the control of violence in Gujarat. Modi personally got adverse comments all through, right from the beginning as his role was

Even the interpretation of the report of SIT is fallacious. Supreme Court had appointed the SIT and also Amicus curiae, Raju Ramchandran. To say that SIT gave a clean chit to Modi is not true. The fact is that the SIT in its 2010 report clearly said: In spite of the fact that ghastly and violent attacks had taken place on Muslims at Gulberg Society and elsewhere, the reaction of the government was not the type that would have been expected by anyone. The chief minister had tried to water down the seriousness of the situation at Gulberg Society, Naroda Patiya and other places by saying that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Ramu Ramchandran based on same report pointed out that there is enough evidence in the SIT report to prosecute Modi. One recalls that NHRC much before all this had con20 Bakhabar : March 2014

At another level, Modi acolytes, Babu Bajrangi and Maya Kodnani are in jails for their role in the carnage. The Tehelka sting shows the collusion between the Babu Bajrangi clan and the state led by Modi. The tribunal set up by Citizens for Justice and Peace with eminent jurists like P.B.Sawant also outlined Modis role in a very clear manner. There has been some justice in few cases of Gujarat. And that is due to yeomen struggle for justice launched by the victims and human rights defenders. The process of justice needs to be pursued. The state of Gujarat has created all possible obstacles in the justice being given to the victims. cluded its report 31.5. 2002 and said that there was a comprehensive failure of the State to protect the Constitutional rights of the people of Gujarat Amicus Curiae in his final report, recommended the prosecution of Narendra Modi under Sections 166 and 153a and 153b of the Indian Penal Code. So where is the clean chit? If we see three major factors, The National Human Rights commission has indicted Modi. Second, based on SIT observations Supreme Court appointed Amicus Curiae holds that Modi can be prosecuted. Third, the process of justice through Courts in Zakia Jafri has begun. After the Court verdict Ms Jafri said that she will appeal to the higher courts. Our process of justice begins with Magistrates Court, does not end with that. Proclaiming that Modi has been given a clean chit for his role in Gujarat carnage is far from truth. Its a clever propaganda, which has been dished out with a deliberate purpose.

THE RULE OF
Islam

NO RISK NO GAIN

All living beings got scared and stepped back. The reason was that the paradise was beautiful but the hell was equally terrifying!Who in his right mind would present himself for such a trial? The emotional humans opted for this test. But, the decision to go through the test from Allah was taken by the collective soul of the entire humanity. Thus, it was a pre-requisite for Allahs ultimate standard of justice to create every single human being and ask directly about the extent of the test he or she was willing to undergo. This happened because Allah is not unfair to anyone, not even in the smallest way. That is why he first created all human beings and then unveiled
21 Bakhabar : March 2014

What happened then?

There was an occasion when Allah offered an opportunity to all of His living creations to enjoy His company eternally in the paradise. But to be able to do so, they first had to spend some time in the world without being able to see Him. All they were supposed to do was to obey His orders, worship Him, and submit to Him without seeing Him. Governance of the world was to be temporarily handed over in trust to the beings who accepted this challenge. The beings who accepted the challenge had to show that despite being the empowered rulers they were ready to obey Him without seeing Him. Those who used this authority and free will correctly were to be rewarded with the eternal company of Allah in the paradise whereas those who failed this test were to face punishment in the hell.

n the above quoted Urdu couplet, the poet regrets his very existence in this life. The concept of reward and punishment in the eternal life hereafteras a result of the test man has been put throughraise a question: whether, taking up the test, was a compulsion or a matter of choice. The author, Abu Yahya, in his famous book, Jab ZindagiShuruHogi - When life beginstalks on this subject in an awesome manner.

The second, and lower, level of the test is whereby people chose to become part of the nations of the prophets after the prophets had passed away. Their test is to protect themselves from going astray, sectarianism, deviations, and ignorance of later times while holding steadfast to the divine law. They are also expected to promote good deeds and to help stop people from bad deeds. These responsibilities are assigned to them as they have the teachings of the prophets to turn to for guidance, and because they are born as Muslims. Therefore, they do not have to pass through difficult trials to recognize the right path. It also meant that they have more guidance available to them compared to other people; hence, they have greater opportunities to reap re-

Allah showed his ultimate benevolence even in this matter. As we are aware, not everyone is tested in the same manner in the world. Each individual chose his or her trial that day. Those who had a lot of resolve chose the times of the prophets for their test. Their test was to believe in and support the prophets during those eras of widespread ignorance. The prime condition for their success was that they had to stand firm even in the face of worst opposition, to remain steadfast despite all kinds of challenges and to pass on the message of their prophets to other people. That is why there was a huge reward for them in the hereafter; however, in case they denied and rejected the prophets, they had to face a severe punishment as they had the benefit of direct guidance by the prophets. Examples of such people include AbuBakr, may Allah bepleased with him, on one hand, and people like Abu-Lahab on the other hand, who was one of the worst enemies of the truth.

Did the rest of the humanity agree to such a tough trial?

his complete scheme of the test to them. Obviously, majority of the human beings were already prepared to take this test. Thus, they agreed to it being fully aware of its implications. However, for those humans who refused to take such a risk, the Almighty decided that they would take up the role of those children who die before reaching maturity. The same children will then become Ghilmn and Hoors.

The real principle that works for all of the groups is the same. Those who received more guidance will face stricter accountability and consequently, will reap either greater reward or worse punishment. Those who received lesser guidance will face lighter accountability and therefore lesser rewards or punishment. However, the decision about which of the three groups each human being belonged to was taken by human beings themselves and was not decided by the Almighty. This implies that if one receives more guidance in the world, it is at his/her own request. As a consequence he/she is a candidate for high level of success as well as equally severe punishment. It means he/she has opted for a huge risk in line with a basic rule No risk No gain. In response to questions from readers the author replies: The basis of what I wrote is found in the Quran. The Quran has stated in chapter Al-'A`rf (7:172)

They were the ones who decided to take the toughest test. That is why they received direct guidance from Allah and the criterion for their accountability was extremely strict too. We are well aware of what happened to Prophet Jonah. He had not committed a sin; he had only reached an incorrect conclusion and acted upon it without divine approval. As a consequence, the Almighty locked him up in the belly of a fish.

What about the prophets?

The third group comprises of people who selected an even easier test. They are born in circumstances where they do not have access to any direct guidance from the prophets. Their test is based on the innate divine guidance present in the nature of every human being, that is, a test based on belief in oneness of God and universal moral values. Unlike other Muslims, they are not subject to the tough trials of following the divine law nor of the companionship of prophets through arduous times. Obviously, their accountability is also going to be quite lenient; accordingly their risk of facing dire punishments is also low and the opportunity to reap great rewards for them is also less.

wards. But in case of negligence, their accountability is to be very tough as well. Muslims belong to this group.

Islam

present world began. The verse clearly mentions that at one point in time all human beings were present together. The occasion is commonly known as the Covenant of Alast.

Similarly, the idea that the human beings willingly agreed to be subjected to a worldly test is also explained in the Quran. The chapter titled Al-Ahzab (33:72) clearly states that when this burden was offered to other creations, all of them declined to take it. It was only the human beings who came forward and accepted this test.

PS: This is not my write up. I have just used the excerpts from writings of an Islamic author Abu Yahya, did necessary editing, added Quranic verses and a subject line.

It is obvious that the tests of people in this world are not the same. We also know that Allah who repeatedly states that He does not inflict even the slightest injustice on his servants is conducting this test. How is it then possible that the absolutely just Allah would subject His servants to a test whose possible outcome includes the horrible fate of being sent to hell, without informing them beforehand of the details of the test and seeking their consent to it? It is based on these facts that I have presented this particular point of view in the book. (Authors website: http://www.inzaar.org/)

Both concepts as stated above, i.e. the presence of all human beings together in a previous life and their decision to undertake this test of their own free will are the basis of my extrapolation that each human being also chose the specific level of the test he or she wished to undergo. That is, each person chose one of the three tests: a test based on guidance found in ones innate nature, a test based on being the direct addressee of a prophet or a test based on being amongst the followers and nation of a prophet after that prophet had passed away.

that humans were born once, before the life in this

Prayer and its Relation with Health

ness, Salat (Islamic Prayer) increases efficiency of the human heart and blood circulation in the human boy. Here, we shall talk about Salat from a very strict perspective, namely its relationship with the human body and health.

Diseases alleviated with salat:

This is a very delicate and interesting issue, namely the relationship between Salat (Islamic Prayer) and physical health. There is not enough room here to go into full details and elaborations of such issue. However, I shall put forward some delicate points and important facts. In fact, in addition to its being a kind of worship that includes submission, veneration, and peaceful24 Bakhabar : March 2014

Alzheimer and senility are also uncommon among Muslims, because prostration causes more blood to flow into the brain and prevents such diseases that are caused by deficiency of blood in the brain. Therefore, prostration forces more blood to flow into blood vessels of the head by the force of gravity. In this context, Allahs Messenger, (PBUH), used to bid Bilal, the venerable Companion, may Allah be pleased with him, O Bilal! Call (people) to Salat Prophetic indication to this fact:

Difficulties in breathing, which are caused by increase of Carbon Dioxide in the lungs, are also rare among Muslims, because compulsory exhalation caused by bowing and prostration activates the heart and lungs.

Also, varices and deep vein clots are rare among Muslims, and so is vascular congestion in the pelvis, which causes hemorrhoids and uterus hemorrhage.

In fact, diseases of the vertebral column are very rare among Muslims who observe Salat, which includes such movements as bowing, prostrating, and standing up, which very useful to the vertebral column. All kinds of Arthritis are also rare among Muslims who observe Salat.

In fact, a Divine Command of Allahs is far too Great and Wise to be justified by one single vindication or benefit. The good things underlying Allahs Most Wise Divine Commands are innumerable. An experiment carried out by some scientists showed that when the head is lowered downwards, blood gathers therein and pressure on arteries increases. But when the head is then suddenly raised up, the pressure decreases. This rise and fall of pressure makes blood vessel more flexible. This means that a person whose blood

vessels are flexible can bear 23 degrees of pressure, while a person who does not perform Salat (Islamic Prayer) cannot bear even 18 degrees of pressure, the blood vessels of his brain will be torn out at such degree of pressure, and he will have a brain failure.

Beyond a shadow of doubt Allahs Divine Commands embrace innumerable benefits to mankind. Yes, indeed! They are from the Creator, from the Maker, Who created mankind! They are from the All-Aware, Who knows what is good or harmful to mankind! To get up before sunrise in order to perform the Dawn Prayer and then to get exposed to ultraviolet rays is something that is good for mans health and entails his Lords Good Pleasure.

cerous tumors are caused by deficiency of mans immunity due to psychic stress, which can be removed only by one thing, namely Islamic Monotheism. To wrap up, you can stand up everywhere and declare: Faith is health! If you believe that Allah, Alone, is the Disposer, the All-Wise, the All-Knowing, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and Powerful over all things, if you see only one Hand that has control over the whole universe, you feel comfortable and secure, you get rid of psychic stress, and you system of immunity gets stronger. This is because random growth of cells, which is called Cancer, is caused by efficiency of immunity, which, in turn, comes from psychic stress, which can be removed by one single thing, namely Islamic Monotheism. That is why it has been rightly said: Mankind can learn nothing better than Islamic Monotheism. To the same effect, Allah, Most Gracious, says, So, do not invoke with Allah another god lest you should be among those who are tormented. [XXVI; 213] Translation : Khaled Al-Athmeh
