The central part of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is the CMX board. It is the main controller board. Each tributary position is linked to the CMX with a direct high-speed link: the HSPTP (High-Speed TDM pt-to-pt). The CMX board provides four E1 uplink interfaces (without the need of a dedicated NxE1 tributary board). This interface is routed from the (optional redundant) CMX board(s) towards the CMXIO board where the physical connectors are provided. The four E1 interfaces can be used as a direct connection to a public/ private network, or as a drop-insert in a chain of stations. FOREIGN EXCHANGE SUBSCRIBER BOARD (FXS)

The Foreign eXchange Subscriber (FXS) tributary board provides the system with 15 physical FXS voice 2-wire interfaces for voice communication. An FXS interface behaves as a voice line interface of a PSTN exchange or a PABX: DTMF dialing and pulse dialing Detection of open or lowic loop between a/b wires (on-hook, off-hook) Detection of a or b wire to ground Sending of ringing current 12/16 kHz metering sending: for supplying the customer with in-band and on-line billing information. Hot-line connection between two dedicated users Battery reversal Calling Line Identification Presentation Line interface parameters are software configurable. The analog (frequency range 300Hz to 3400Hz) to digital audio encoding in the transmit direction (Tx) is done according to the G.712 A-law and converted into a 64 kb/s timeslot. The opposite conversion is performed in the receive direction (Rx). The FXS in an Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is always combined with an Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX with an FXO board, providing a mirror configuration to connect the POTS loops to the PABX or PSTN exchange. This is illustrated in Figure 5.

The E&M (EM) tributary board supplies the system with 15 physical analog E&M 2-wire or 4-wire interfaces. Examples of E&M applications are analog leased lines, teleprotection, public announcements, and omnibus lines (see section Omnibus lines/party lines). E&M is a type of signaling used on analog telephone trunks. E&M connections use an E- and M-wire in addition to the wires that carry the voice. E-wire = analog receive (ground detector) M-wire = analog transmit (ground switch)

Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX | Release 1.0

Because the voice can use either 2 wires or 4 wires, the total numbers of wires used on an E&M circuit is either 4 or 6. The E-wire is also called the Ear lead and the M-wire is also called the Mouth lead. The analog (frequency range 300Hz to 3400Hz) to digital audio encoding in the transmit direction (Tx) is done according to the G.712 A-law and converted into a 64 kb/s timeslot. The opposite conversion is performed in the receive direction (Rx). Two- or 4-wire mode is software selectable. Redundancy

A paramount feature for our customers is delivering a product with an availability > 99.999%, which makes redundant network systems essential. This section discusses how the AlcatelLucent 1511 MAX achieves this goal.
POWER REDUNDANCY

The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is fed from a redundant DC source (-48V or -60V A+B). This is supplied to the redundant CMX boards, which in turn distribute the power to the tributary boards realizing redundant feeding for each tributary board. So, power feeding redundancy works together with the optional redundancy of the CMX board. Power availability is monitored on each tributary board, as well as on the CMX. The CMX also monitors the power level.
M AT R I X R E D U N D A N C Y

Cross-connect matrix redundancy is achieved by 1+1 non-reverting redundant CMX boards in active/standby mode. Each tributary has an Equipment Protection Switch (EPS) towards the internal HSPTP. The EPS does the switchover from the path from the failing CMX to the standby CMX. Each tributary board has an independent HSPTP to each of the CMX boards.
N E 1 T R I B U TA RY R E D U N D A N C Y

Tributary redundancy is applicable for NE1 tributary boards and is achieved by the 1+1 nonreverting redundant NE1 boards in active/standby mode. One can configure 2 different NE1 boards placed in any pair of adjacent slots in the NE as a redundant pair. The EPS does the switchover, if needed. Note: All other functions of the CMX board such as signaling, clock, synchronization and conference bridging are also protected by implementing redundant CMX boards.
TRAIL PROTECTION

The trail protection uses the internal redundant routing feature and enables route protection on the trail level. If used, the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX transmits data via two different trails: at the receive side data coming from the healthy trail or, if this route fails, data is taken from the other side. This internal redundant routing is implemented in each type of tributary. The redundant routing of a 64 kb/s timeslot is illustrated in Figure 7, where the NE1 tributary board duplicates the active circuits and provides protection switching.

Signaling

In each tributary board and on the CMX board, a signaling module is responsible for the proper handling of communication control signals between two or more users (e.g., the setting up and tearing down of a connection). The users can be local or remote depending on the location in the network. It is also possible that a number of users are communicating in conference. To support this conferencing, the CMX provides a specific signaling module. The signaling module is also responsible for the interaction between a voice user and an exchange. For every user (voice interface, data interface, conference network), a signaling module is provided (see Figure 8). This module is responsible for the translation of events coming from the user into CAS signaling bits, and from CAS signaling bits into an event towards the user. Two examples of user events are on-off hook and ringing.

Clock and Synchronization

Stringent clock requirements are critical to the proper functioning of a carrier-grade TDM network. The variation of a clocks rate over time is conventionally divided into two components: jitter and wander. The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is in compliance with the ITU-T G.823 recommendation, defining the permissible output jitter and wander for two levels: the lower being the traffic interface (for transmission purposes on the tributary boards and the E1s on the CMXIO board) and the more stable being the synchronization interface (used by the BITS output interface of the CMXIO board). TDM networks rely on hierarchical distribution of timing. At the top of the hierarchy is an accurate Primary Reference Clock (PRC). Next comes the SDH Equipment Clocks (SEC). At the bottom of the pyramid are Synchronization Supply Units (SSUs). The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is situated at the SSU level, which is defined in ITU-T G.812. The source of the clock synchronization could come from a PRC, a SEC or another SSU. The internal system clock of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX has an accuracy of 50 ppm. The oscillator of this system clock should be synchronized to an external source. The synchronization function is centralized on the CMX boards. The three available options for synchronizing the internal system clock are: External: Building Integrated Timing Supply (BITS) on one of the two external BITS 2 MHz G.703 clock input signals located at the CMXIO board. This would be the case, if the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is co-located at the CO. At a remote location, the BITS signal could also be generated by a Global Positioning System (GPS) clock. Extracted: Network clock extraction of the synchronization signal from one of the E1 ports of a NE1 tributary board or E1s of the CMX (e.g., if the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is deployed at a remote location). Internal: Local XO clock use of the internal oscillator of the system. The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX has a programmable priority scheme that selects the best available clock according to a priority scheme programmed by the operator and the perceived quality (presence and stability) of the references. In the absence of any external synchronization source clock, the system goes into holdover mode, using its own free-running local XO clock as a time reference. The clock signal is distributed to each individual tributary board. The CMX-boards also provide a clock output for synchronization of external equipment at the BITS-O 2 MHz G.703 interface of the CMXIO board.

Conference Bridge

The conference bridge function is provided on the CMX board. Its main function is to provide voice and signaling conference features. The number of participants can vary from 3 to 100. Participants can be added and/or removed dynamically. Up to 20 conferences can take place simultaneously. There are two types of conferences (see Figure 9):

Master-slave One participant is considered as master and all other participants are slaves. The master broadcasts its information to all the slaves, and receives the combined information from all the slaves. The slaves only hear the master. The slaves cannot communicate with each other. In masterslave conference, two sub-phases can be distinguished: broadcast from master to slaves and collect from slaves to master. Full conference All involved participants are equivalent. All members can communicate with each other. Every participant gets the combined information from all others, but himself or herself. These 2 conference types are used for three types of resources: Voice conference This type is used for speech applications. Each channel is transformed to linear form, added to the others, if applicable, and transformed back to PCM form. G.712 A-law coding is supported. Overflow of the add process is monitored, attenuating the relevant channel if required. Signaling conference The signaling conference is part of a voice conference. The CAS signaling of each member is terminated in the conference signaling engine, which generates the CAS signaling to the destinations. This kind of application can serve, for example, to activate a bell or other indicator at each participants location by means of external equipment. The first one to pick up the telephone alarms all others, and the indication remains on until the last one hangs up.

Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX | Release 1.0

Data conference The data conference is used for both 64 kb/s and Nx64 kb/s applications. Data conference is only supported in the master-slave mode. It can be used, for example, to connect one master computer with a series of other computers, where the master sends to all slaves; however, only the one addressed is allowed to answer. Another example, illustrated in Figure 10, is a pointto-multipoint data conference. In this configuration, the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX conference bridge, which functions in the master node, is combined with the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX cross-connect function in another node.

Omnibus Lines or Party-lines

The omnibus line system allows intelligent telephone sets to make selective calls among a predefined number of them, without the intervention of a Public Switch or PABX. The telephone sets can be located along a utility network. Two categories of omnibus lines exist: a dispatcher system and a full conference system. Dispatching system: one master of the group. The master can call any individual slave telephone set or can call a group out of the omnibus line. The slaves can only call the master. In the same way, during the conversation, the master can talk to every slave and can listen to all the slaves; the slave can listen only to the master. Full conference system: all parties are at the same level. Every party can call an individual other party or a selected group out of the omnibus line. All parties can listen to all parties. The dedicated telephone sets are connected to 4 wire E&M ports of Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAXs. The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX does the AD/DA conversion, maps the voice signals on a 64 kb/s timeslot. The E1s are transported from the different sites to one central site. In the central sites Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX, the 64 kb/s channels are cross connected to the conference bridge of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX. By giving the right instruction to the conference bridge, it realizes the dispatching connection or the full conference connection. This application is illustrated in Figure 11.

Network Management

The network management of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is illustrated in Figure 12. For the initialization of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX, the setup of IP network parameters is done with the CLI (Command Line Interface) via an EIA/TIA-232 cable connected to the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX. After this initialization, the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX can be managed via different management systems: Web-based Craft Terminal The WebCT is a web-based craft terminal for the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX. The craft terminal is typically a PC with a normal web browser. All management information is handled through web pages. The web server inside the 1511 MAX responds to HTTP-protocol based management requests to display or update data in the 1511 MAX. Alcatel-Lucent 1511 Element Manager (EM) The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM is a dedicated software platform running on a server. With the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM server, several operators can manage the NE simultaneously from a workstation (Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM client). The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM is a system targeted for a Network Operation Center enabling 24x7 management of the AlcatelLucent 1511 MAX resources. The main purpose of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM is to provide advanced and centralized multi-NE management. The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM can manage up to 2,000 fully equipped 1511 MAXs. For smaller networks (less than 300 nodes), the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM can run on a PC. The communication protocols between the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM and the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX are SNMP, HTTP and FTP. The communication between the client and the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM server utilizes the HTTP protocol. The user interface is identical to the WebCT interface, though it has additional functionality to manage a network of Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAXs.

18

Third-Party Management Tool Optionally, an SNMP-based, third-party management tool, or higher layer Operations Support Systems (OSS)/Business Support Systems (BSS), can manage the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX NEs, in combination with the WebCT, or in communication with the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 EM. The communication protocol between the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX or the AlcatelLucent 1511 EM and the third- party management tool is SNMPv2c or SNMPv3. The thirdparty management tool requires an Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX dedicated software plug-in. All three tools are connected to the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX over a data communication network via an E1 or Ethernet interface of an Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX.

Digital TV and Radio Broadcasting

Broadcasting operators are investing in the migration from analog to digital TV and radio broadcast systems. At the same time, they need to upgrade their transmission network to a highly reliable network. A broadcasting network typically consists of a contribution network (from mobile or regional production studios to a main production/play-out studio) and a distribution network (from the play-out studios to the digital TV (digital video broadcast terrestrial [DVB-T]) and radio (digital audio broadcasting [DAB]) broadcast transmitters. The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is used to flexibly drop and cross-connect channels to particular (regional) broadcast transmitters, and to control TV and radio coders/decoders (codecs).

Private Line/Leased Line

One of the main applications of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is private line/leased- line services (shown in Figure 19), which allow the service provider to offer customers customer premises equipment (CPE) that is connected into the network to backhaul data from the remote site to the headquarters. Often, this is used for LAN-to-LAN or LAN-to-host connections where the remote site is accessing database information, headquarters-controlled applications, and the Internet. The Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX business access multiplexer can be used in voice, data, or integrated voice and data networking, and may be deployed in point-to-point, point-to-network, and point-to-multipoint topologies. Figure 19 depicts a typical leased-line network requiring business site connectivity. Common requirements include dedicated voice services, data terminal-to-server connections, and remote LAN connectivity. Bandwidths among the various locations are leased from telecom carriers. These lines are connected to the local point of presence (PoP) within the enterprise network.

OPEX reduction (minimize recurring backhauling bandwidth expenses) CAPEX reduction with integrated Multiplexer and Cross-connect. CAPEX and OPEX reduction

UTILITY OPERATORS

Sub-rate multiplexing function that is able to multiplex several low-bit rate data streams into one 64 kb/s channel, so that costs are saved on trunks in the backbone network. Reliability larger than 99,999% Very high Quality of Service (overall error ratio of the system per 2 Mb/s stream is less than 10 -10)
TELCO OPERATORS

Secures the mission-critical needs of the utility owners telecom network CAPEX and Total Cost of Ownership reduction

Thanks to its high reliability and the availability of the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX, together with a full range of local data and voice interfaces, the Alcatel-Lucent 1511 MAX is the ideal device to be used in Point of Presence sites.
