Vishnusahasranama Meanings

1. Viswam:
The Lord permeates the universe and is the perfect
embodiment of all auspicious qualities-
graceful,flawless,infinite.
2. Vishnuhu:

He is present in everything and everywhere: he is
the soul of being in the universe.
3. Vashatkaaraha:

He occupies all space, being and things; He also
directs them to function as He wants them to.
4. Bhoota-bhavya-bhavath-prabhuhu:

He is the master of the phases of Time. The Past,
the present and the future: He controlled what
happened in the past, controls what happens in the
present, and will control what happens in the
future.
5. Bhootha-krith:

He creates all beings and all things at will and as He
wishes.
6. Bhootha-brith:

He supports all the words and all the things in the
Universe.
7. Bhaavaha:

Everything in the universe is like an ornament
adding to His splendour.
8. Bhoothaathma:

As the Lord is present in everything everywhere, all
beings and things are only His body (or tiny parts of
His body).
9. Bhootha-bhaavanaha:

He nourishes all beings, sustains them, feeds them,
and educates them, preparing them for, and
guiding them in, their respective lives.
10. Poothaathma:

The Lord is pure and spotless. In spite of
encompassing all living and non-living things in the
universe, the flaws that afflicts and charecterise
the constituents do not attach to Him or mar the
perfection of His purity.
11. Paramaathma:

He is the supreme Soul in the entire universe.
12. Mukthaanaam Paramaa-Gathithi:

He is the final destination of all liberated souls and
Who, once attained, does not let go of those who
have attained him but ensures their eternal bliss.
13. Avyavaha:

No one is sent away from Him, once that being has
attained Him.
14. Purushaha:

He bestows everlasting and limitless bliss on those
who have realized Him.
15. Saakshi:

He enjoys seeing that those who have attained him
enjoy the same bliss that He does in His abode.
16. Kshetragnyaha:

His abode is the only place where liberated souls
can enjoy eternal bliss.
17. Aksharaha:

As liberated souls experience bliss ln Lhe Lords
abode, they perceive more and more of His

unlimited auspicious divine qualities that
continually increase their happiness.
18. Yogaha:

The Lord Himself is the means by which liberated
beings attain Him in His abode.
19. Yogavithaam-netha:

He shows the way to liberation to those who follow
the path of Bhakti or devotion to Him.
20. Prathaana-Purusheswaraha:

He directs both the souls and the ties that bind the
souls (to others or things).
21. Naarsimha-vapuha:

Taking that form of Narasimhaa, the Lord offered
instantaneous succour to His devotee, Prahlaadaa,
when His father threatened him with death if Lord
Naaraayanaa did not appear from the pillars he
stuck with His mace.
22. Sreemaan:

He has a singular, incomparable and lustrous
beauty that is bliss for the devotees to behold.
23. Kesavaha:

He is beautiful, black, curly hair that frame His
visage, enhancing His beauty.
24. Purushotthamaha:

He is the best of all beings in the universe.
25. Sarvaha:

The Lord permeates all things (animate and
inanimate) in the universe and treats them as
(parts of) His own body.
26. Sarvaha:

He removes all the evil and banal things that might
inhabit or pollute all things in the Universe.
27. Sivaha:

The Lord confers bountiful and auspicious benefits
on all beings.
28. Sthaanuhu:

He is steady and steadfast in conferring benefits.
29. Bhoothaathihi:

All beings (should) desire to attain the Lord as the
ultimate benefit.
30. Nithir-avyaha:

The Lord suffers no diminution as a result of
conferring benefits on others: He is an
inexhaustible source of bliss and all other benefits.
31. Sambhavaha:

He takes birth at various times (as Narasimha,
Raama, Krishnaa, etc.) to re-assure His devotees.
32. Bhaavanaha:

When the Lord takes birth on earth, He removes
evil forces that harass the people, bringing them
relief, joy and happiness.
33. Bharthaa:

He nurtures all things in the universe.
34. Prabhavaha:

The Lord is untouched by any blemish even in His
incarnations.
35. Prabhuhu:

He can confer immeasurable benefits on His
devotees even in His incarnations.

36. Easwaraha:

The Lord is capable of conferring great benefits
during His incarnation more discernibly than even
from His heavenly abode.
37. Swayambhuhu:

The Lord takes birth on earth ofHis own volition
and free will to support His devotees.He retains His
divine character though His physical appearance
may resemble that of other beings.
38. Sambhuhu:

He treats all His devotees alike:

the high and the lowly, the strong and the weak.
39. Aathithyaha:

The Lord is the shining, golden-hued deity seated in
the sun.
40. Pushkaraakshaha:

His eyes are like a pair of fresh lotus blossoms.
(THis is a unique aspect of MahaaVishnu: He is the
Lotus-eyed One, with ever-smiling eyes for His
devotees).
41. Mahaaswanaha:

The Lord is the essence of all the Vedhaas and of all
holy writings.
42. Anaathi-nidhanaha:

He has neither beginning nor end: He is ageless and
always in the prime of life.
43. Dhaathaa:

The Lord created Brahmaa giving him the power to
create other beings.
44. Vidhaathaa:

He established all actions and the consequences of
those actions.
45. Dhaathur-uththamaha:

The Lord is the best of all beings.
46. Aprameyaha:

1he Lords lncomparable naLure cannoL be
understood fully even by Brahmaa and other divine
beings.
47. Hrusheekesaha:

He rules over and controls all five senses.
48. Padmanaabhaha:

The Lord controls Time, having created a lotus from
His navel and Brahmaa from the lotus, Brahmaa
who marks the beginning of time (as we know it).
49. Amaraprabhuhu:

He is the Supreme Lord of all divine beings whom
He entrusts with various duties and giving them
powers appropriate to their duties.
50. Viswakarmaa:

He is the true source of all actions before and after
the creation of Brahmaa.
51. Manuhu:

The Lord wills and, by so willing, creates everything
and everyone.
52. Thwashtaa:

He creates various beings and species and gives
them form and nature.
53. Sthavishtaha:

He encompasses the entire universe within

Himself. (He is thus the largest being in the
universe.)
54. Sthaviraha:

He is changeless and unchangeable.
55. Dhruvaha:

He is constant, unaffected by changes in the
universe.
56. Agraahya:

The Lord causes and creates all things and is not
caused or created by anyone.
57. Saaswathaha:

He is unceasingly and permanently active.
58. Krishnaha:

He is always happy, supporting His devotees and
destroying evil beings and forces that afflict them,
and engaged in the process of creation, sustenance
and termination.
59. Lohidaakshaha:

His joy in helping His devotees is reflected in His
lotus-like eyes with a tinge of red (caused by the
red veins).
60. Prathardhanaha:

He ends all life on earth at the time of the Great
Deluge.
61. Prabhoothaha:

He is indestructible by the Great Deluge (as He is
the one who causes it) and has everything He
needs at all times in His heavenly abode.
62. Thriguththaamaa:

He is the perfect and total embodiment of
knowledge, power, strength, wealth, courage and
personality. He can recreate the entire universe in
a trice after the deluge.
63. Pavithram:

He is the embodiment of purity, purity that
purifies.
64. Mangalamparam:

He is the unalloyed essence of all auspicious
qualities, and only auspicious qualities.
65. Easaanaha:

The Lord controls and conducts everyone and
everything in the universe with unceasing energy
and power.
66. Praanathaha:

He grants to His devotees the capacity to see an
serve Him with undiminished joy and energy.
67. Praanaha:

He is the breath of the lives of His devotees.
68. Jyeshtaha:

He is the first and seniormost among all beings in
the universe.
69. Sreshtaha:

He is the most delectable of beings: His glorious are
a constant source of pleasure to His devotees who
are always singing His praises.
70. Prajaapathihi:

He is the Lord and the protector of His devotees.
71. Hiranya-garbhaha:

He resides in the flawless,lovely golden abode.

72. Bhoogarbhaha:

He protects Mother Earth as a mother protects the
baby in her womb.
73. Maadhavaha:

The Lord is inseparable from His consort, Sree-Devi
(or Mahalakshmi).
74. Madhusoothanaha:

He destroys the demon Madhu.
75. Easwaraha:

1he Lords wlll rules unlmpeded everywhere.
76. Vikramee:

The Lord has limitless strength and power.
77. Dhanvee:

he always has at His command Saarngaa, the
mathless bow.
78. Medhaavee:

He is omniscient, transcending all boundaries of
space and time.
79. Vikramaha:

He has as His chariot the celestial eagles Garudaa
(said to personify the Vedhas).
80. Kramaha:

He commands unlimited power and resources all
the time.
81. Anuththamaha:

He has no equal or superior.
82. Dhuraadharshaha:

He is unfathomable and majestic like the deep
oceans.
83. Kruthagnaya:

He never forgets or overlooks even the most
insignificant offering made to Him.
84. Kruthihi:

He motivates people to perform good deeds.
85. Aathmavaan:

The Lord is the Supreme Being who owns and
motivates everyone.
86. Suresaha:

He is the Lord and Master of divine beings like
Brahmaa and all others.
87. Saranam:

The Lords shows the path, and is the means, to
attain Him.
88. sarma:

He is the supreme goal of His devotees.
89. Vishwa-rethaaha:

He is the prime cause of the universe and
everything in it.
90. Prajaabhavaha:

He helps all beings attain Him with the means He
has given them.
91. Ahaha:

He is like daylight, illuminating the minds of His
devotees.
92. Samvathsaraha:


The Lord resides in all beings, giving them the
wisdom to realise Him at the appropriate time.
93. Vyaalaha:

He protects those who surrender to Him.
94. Prathyayaha:

He inspires them to have confidence in Him.
95. Satvadharsanaha:

He reveals Himself to them fully over time.
96. Ajaha:

The Lord Himself removes all obstacles in the
devoLees paLh Lo reallzlng Plm.
97. Sarvaeshwaraha:

He goes at once to help those who have
surrendered themselves to Him.
98. Sidhdhaha:

The Lord is ever ready to help His devotees.
99. Sidhdhi:

He is the only goal of all those who seek liberation.
100. Sarvaathith:

He is the ultimate source of all rewards, whether
the goals sought are high or low.
101. Achyuthaha:

He never lets go of, or abandons, those who have
reached Him.
102. Vrushaakapihi:

The Lord took the form of Varahaa, the boar, to
protect Dharmaa.
103. Ameyaathmaa:

He has countless ways of helping His devotees.
104. Sarvayoga-vinisruthaha:

He is equally attainable by yoga, knowledge,
intellect, or total surrender.
105. Vasuhu:

The Lord resides with love and affection in those
who seek refuge in Him.
106. Vasumanaa:

He treasures those who seek refuge in Him.
107. Sathya:

He grants those beings whatever they want.
108. Samaathma:

In His eyes, all those who seek refuge in Him are
equal.
109. Sammithaha:

The Lord submits Himself to all His devotees.
110. Samaha:

He displays the same regard for all His devotees.
111. Amoghaha:

The Lord will never allow devotion devotion to him
to be futile.
112. Pundareekaatshaha:

He has beautiful, brilliant, all-seeing eyes.
113. Vrushakarmaa:

He is the most charitable of beings.

114. Vrushaakrithi:

The Lord is the embodiment of fairness, justice and
concern for all beings.
115. Rudraha:

The mere contemplation of His divine form causes
devotees to shed tears of joy.
116. Bhahusiraaha:

He is also Aadiseshaa, the snake with thousand
heads.
117. Bhabhruhu:

He keeps entire universe in Balance.
118. Viswayonihi:

His divine embrace covers all those who seek
refuge in him.
119. SucHisravaaha:

The Lord hears only the pure and sweet words
spoken by His devotees and ignores angry and
unpleasant utterances.
120. Amruthaha:

He confers everlasting bliss in His heavenly abode
on those who surrender themselves to Him.
121. Saaswatha-sthaanuhu:

He is like everlasting nectar to His Devotees.
122. Varaarohaha:

Going to His abode is the best thing that can
happen to anyone.
123. Mahaathapaaha:

He is omniscient, doing everything as and when
appropriate.
124. Sarvagaha:

The Lord has the strength to absorb all that had to
be terminated in His role as protector of His
devotees, the weak, the poor, and the oppressed.
125. Sarvavith:

He creates and gives new lives to those who had to
be terminated. (He does tHis in His role as
Pradyumnaa.)
126. Bhaanuhu:

Though creating and terminating things and beings,
He Himself remains unaffected by these events.
127. Viswaksenaha:

He has the capacity to protect anybody and
anything anywhere any time. (he does tHis in His
role as Aniruddhaa.)
128. Janaardhanah:

He can eliminate all His enemies by Himself.
129. Vethaha:

The Lord, as sankarshnaa, can grant knowledge of
the Vedhaas to all who seek it.
130. Vethavith:

He is the source of the Vedhaas and their
meanings.
131. Avyangaha:

He is also the source of all sciences.
132. Vethaangaha:

He can be understood through the Vedhaas.
133. Vethavith:


He is pleased when people live according to the
teaching of the Vedaas.
134. Kavihi:

Being omniscient, He sees all everything at all
times.
135. Lokaadhyakshaha:
He knows who can be entrusted with the
performance of what functions to ensure the
welfare of the people.
136. Suraadhyakshaha:

He knows who among the people are worshipping
which Devas.
137. Dharmaadhyakshaha:

He lays down the rewards for various actions to
ensure Dharmaa (or right conduct).
138. Kruthaakruthaha:

The Lord confers permanent bliss in His abode
and/or wealth, prosperity and happiness on the
earth according to what each devotee deserves.
139. Chathruaathma:

The Lord has the four forms of Vaasudevaa,
Sankarshanaa, Prdyumnaa and Anirudhaa (for
different functiond).
140. Chathurvyoohaha:

He assumes the form appropriate to the function.
141. Chathurdhamshtraha:

He has four large teeth characteristic of
Vaasudevaa.
142. Chathurbhujaha:

He has four hands carring the Sudharsana Chakra
and other weapons (ever ready to protect His
devotees).
143. Braajishnuhu:

The Lord reveals Himself to devotees who
surrender themselves to Him.
144. Bojanam:

Devotees enjoy seeing Him as they would enjoy
divine food.
145. Bokthaa:

He delights in His offerings of His devotees as He
would nectar.
146. SaHishnuhu:

The Lord overlooks all offences committed by His
devotees against Himself or other devotees of His.
147. Jagthaathijaha:

As Vishnu, He is the first and the foremost among
the three:

Bramhaa, Vishnu and Sivaa.
148. Anakaha:

He is flawless, unblemished.
149. Vijayaha:

He ensures that Bramhaa and Sivaa perform their
respective roles of creator and destroyer
successfully.
150. Jethaa:

He overseas the functioning if the universe.
151. Viswayonihi:

He is the prime cause of the universe.

152. Punarvasu:

He dwells in the hearts of all beings:

divine, human and other.
153. Upendraha:

Among the twelve Aadityaas, He took the form of
the twelfth, as a younger brother of Indra.
154. Vaamanaha:

He was Vaamana, in one of His incarnations, to
protect Indra from being usurped by Bali.
155. Praamschuhu:

As tiny Vaamana, however, He took the form of
trivikramaa covering the whole universe.
156. Amokaha:

The Lord never lets down His devotees.
157. Suchihi:

He does not expect any return for favours granted
or done.
158. Oorjithaha:

Pe can desLroy Pls (and Pls devoLees) enemles
without fail anytime he wants.
159. Atheendraha:

He is superior to all in His divine powers.
160. Samkrahaha:

He is easily understood by His devotees.
161. Sargaha:

He recreates Himself in various forms(avathaars or
incarnations) as needed.
162. Thruthaathmaa:

He supports all beings in their efforts to attain Him.
163. Niyamaha:

He disciplines and/or destroys those who threaten
or harass His devotees.
164. Yamaha:

He reforms and directs even erring being to the
right path.
165. Vedhdhyaha:

The Lord can be known through His incarnations.
166. Vaidhyaha:

He can free His devotees from all worldly suffering.
167. Sathaayogee:

He is always ready to free His devotees of such
sufferings (at the appropriate time).
168. Veeraha:

He condemns to interminable suffering disbelievers
(in God) until they realize His existence.
169. Maadhava:

He is the bestower of knowledge.
170. Madhuhu:

He is like honey (or nectar) to His devotees.
171. Atheendriyaha:

Pe ls beyond Lhe reach of (dlsbellevers) human
senses.
172. Mahaamaayaha:


He is like an illusion (or curtain) that prevents the
understanding of disbelievers in His existence.
173. Mahothsaaha:

He has inexhaustible energy.
174. Mahaabalaha:

He is incredibly strong.
175. Mahaabuddhuhu:

The Lord has an incomparable intellect.
176. Mahaaveeryaha:

His heroism is unique and unsurpassed.
177. Mahaasakthihi:

He has unrivalled power.
178. Mahaatdhyuthihi:

He has a brilliant radiance that illuminates
everything.
179. Anirdhesyavapuhu:

He has a divine, infinetly beautiful presence that
defies all description.
180. Sreemaan:

He possesses every adornment imaginable.
181. Ameyaathmaa:

He has unfathomable auspicious qualities.
182. Mahaathritdhruth:

He is so strong that He supported on His back a
huge mountain while it was being used to churn
the ocean of milk for nectar.
183. Maheshwaasaha:

He has arrows of incomparable penetrating power.
184. Maheebharththa:

He is the protector of the earth and the entire
universe.
185. Sreenivaasaha:

He is the abode of Mahaalakshmi.
186. Sathaam-gathihi:

He is the unfailing shelter for all good people.
187. Aniruddhaha:

He brushes aside all obstacles (as if they are
nothing).
188. Suraanandhaha:

He protects all good people in all crises.
189. Govindaha:

He is the One whose glories are praised by all
beings.
190. Govidhaampathihi:

He protects all those who worship Him (in any form
or in any way).
191. Mareechihi:

The Lord can help even those born blind see His
divine form.
192. Thamanaha:

He can help overcome grief and suffering.
193. Hamsaha:


He appeared as a swan, the most harmless of
beings.
194. Suparnaha:

He leads His devotees through the ocean of life.
195. Bhujagoththamaha:

He is the pure embodiment of mind (in His form
reclining on Aadiseshaa).
196. Hiranyanaabhaha:

Even His navel is beautiful.
197. Suthapaaha:

He has knowledge of everything, superior to any
other being.
198. Padmanaabhaha:

The Lord has a lotus in His navel.
199. Prajaapathihi:

He is the overLord of all and every being in the
universe.
200. Amruthyuhu:

He is the implacable enemy of Pls devoLees
enemies.
201. Sarvathkrik:

He treats devotees, enemies and others as each
one deserves.
202. Simmhaha:

The Lord appeared with the face of a lion to
protect His devotees.
203. Sandhaathaa:

The Lord embraces those who surrender
themselves to Him.
204. Sandhimaan:

He ensures that His devotees, once united with
Him, are united with Him for ever.
205. Sthiraha:

He is steadfast in His support of devotees.
206. Ajaha:

He has no birth (or death) like other being.
207. Durmarshanaha:

His valour is overpowering.
208. Saasthaa:

Pe punlshes Pls devoLees enemles as approprlaLe.
209. Visruthaathmaa:

His deeds (in His incarnation as Narasimhaa) are
wondrous.
210. Suraarihaa:

Pe Lore aparL Pls devoLees enemy (wlLh Pls
hands).
211. Gururgurathamha:

The Lord is the teacher of all other teachers,
including Brahmaa.
212. Dhaama:

He is the sole residence for everything in the
universe (at the time of the Great Deluge or
Pralayaa).
213. Sathyaha:


He helps all those who seek His help in the Great
Deluge.
214. Sathya-Paraakramaha:

He is truthful in the exercise of His powers.
215. Nimishaha:

Nevertheless, He does not look on the enemies of
His devotees with favor.
216. Animishaha:

His devotees receive the constant grace of His
ever-watchful eyes.
217. Sragvee:

The Vaijayanthi necklace adorns His neck.
218. Vaachaspathihi:

He is the Lord of speech (having explained the
principles of the Vedaas in His incarnation as
Matsyaa, the fish).
219. Uthaaradheehee:

He is omniscient, knowing everything there is to
know.
220. Agraneehi:

He guides His devotees towards emancipation.
221. Graamaneehee:

He is the first of all living beings in the universe.
222. Sreemaan:

Even in His incarnation as the fish, He possesses
eyes like a pair of beautiful lotuses.
223. Nyaayaha:

He is the Just One, never harming His devotees.
224. Nethaa:

He even carries out the wishes of His devotees.
225. Sameeranaha:

His appearance is divine.
226. Sahasramoorthaa:

He possesses a thousand(or limitless) heads, hands,
legs, etc., to act in many places and deal with many
things at the same time.
227. Viswaathmaa:

He occupies all spaces and things at all times.
228. Sahasraakshaha:

He has a thousand (or unlimited number of eyes) to
see everything all the time.
229. Sahasrapaath:

He has a thousand (or innumerable) feet.
230. Aavarthanaha:

The Lord keeps the universe and its being going.
231. Nivruthaathmaa:

He transcends the entire universe.
232. Samvruthaha:

he is beyond the vision and understanding of evil
man.
233. Sampramarthanaha:

He removes the darkness from the mind of beings
when they meditate on Him.
234. Ahas-Samvarthaha:

He keeps the wheel of time moving.

235. Vahni:

He supports the whole universe.
236. Anilaha:

He ensures the lives of all beings (as long as
appropriate) and their eventual salvation and union
with Him in His heavenly abode.
237. Dharaneedharaha:

He is is the sustainer of the earth and its occupants.
238. Suprasaathaha:

The Lord grants salvation even to those who
oppose Him in their earthly lives.
239. Prasannaathmaa:

He has no likes or dislikes except to help everyone
who seeks His help.
240. Viswasrugh:

He is, in particular, the guardian of the good.
241. Viswabhugvibhuhu:

He pervades and protects everything in the
universe.
242. Sathkarthaa:

He is, in particular, the guardian of the good.
243. Sathkruthaha:

He appreciates and joyously accepts anything
people offer Him in accordance with capacity of
each people.
244. Saadhuhu:

He will undertake even minor tasks to help His
devotees.
245. Jahnuhu:

He will not display His incomparable powers to
non-devotees (except to destroy or humble them).
246. Naaraayanaha:

He is the soul of all other souls in the universe.
247. Naraha:

He is the beginningless and endless and immortal.
248. Asankkeyaha:

The Lord possesses infinite auspicious qualities.
249. Aprameyaathmaa:

He pervades the inside and outside of everything in
the universe.
250. Visishtaha:

He is unique.
251. SIstakrith:

He endows all those who seek Him with every
desirable qualities.
252. Suchihi:

He is the epitome of purity.
253. Siddhaarthaha:

He possesses everything that any being can desire.
254. Siddhasankalpaha:

He is infallible and capable of accomplishing
anything He wishes instantaneously.
255. Siddhidhaha:

He endows those He deems worthy with
uncommon abilities.

256. SiddHisaadhanaha:

Even the path of attaining Him is full of bliss.
257. Vrushaahe:

He makes the first day of surrendering to Him as
auspicious as the final say of salvation.
258. Vrushabhaha:

He showers His blessings on those that have had to
struggle with the adversities of life.
259. Vishnuhu:

He bestows His grace on all His devotees equally.
260. Vrushparvaa:

He prescribes the steps to reach Him.
261. Vrushotharaha:

Pe proLecLs Pls devoLees as on would ones
stomach.
262. Varddhanaha:

He looks after His devotees as a mother would her
baby.
263. Vardhaamaanaha:

He derives immense joy from helping His devotees.
264. Vivikthaha:

He is singular in His greatness, holy teachings lead.
265. SrutHisaagaraha:

He is the ocean to which all holy teachings lead.
266. Subhujo:

The Lord is endowed with strong arms (to bear the
burdens of His devotees).
267. Dhurdharaha:

He cannot be opposed by any other being in the
universe.
268. vaagmee:

He speaks only praiseworthy words.
269. Mahendraha:

He is praised and celebrated by all beings.
270. Vasudhaha:

He grants whatever is sought by even the lowliest
of His devotees.
271. Vasuhu:

The wise ones consider knowing Him the most
precious possession and the only one they need.
272. Naikaroopaha:

He takes many forms (appropriate to the occasion).
273. Bruhadhroopaha:

His forms can cover the entire universe (when
neccesary).
274. Sipivistaha:

He radiates light and pervades the light rays.
275. Prakaasanaha:

He reveals Hid divine form to devotees (such as
Arjunaa).
276. Ojas-thejodh-yuthidharaha:

His might is such as can overwhelm all enemies at
the same time.
277. Prakaas-aathmaa:


He can make Himself be seen even by dullards and
blind beings.
278. Prathaapanaha:

He can burn His enemies.
279. Riddhaha:

He likes a great flood overflowing the banks of a
river.
280. Spashtaaksharaha:

His greatness is clearly spelt out in all holy writings
(like the Vedhaas).

He is ever alert in providing succour to His

The Lord carries out all His (self-imposed) duties as
an example to other beings, not for any benefit to

He is difficult to comprehend unless one meditates

He can confer benefits instantaneously where

He makes sure that wealth conferred by Him on His
devotees is utilized for good deeds.
477. Dharmakruth:

His grace promotes the pursuit of good conduct.

He follows the rules of good conduct themselves as
instruments for enforcing such conduct.

The Lord exists without beginning (birth) and end
(death).
480. Aksharamsath:

His qualities and powers never fade.

481. Asath:

In the case of vicious beings, He ensures a long
period of worldly suffering commensurate with
thier evil actions.
482. Asath-ksharam:

He never associates with evil beings.
483. Avijynaathaa:

He never hears offensive words uttered by His
devotees in pain or anger.
484. Sahasraamsuhu:

He never takes offence at angry words spoken by
His devotees.

He protects His devotees from other divine beings
even in matters He entrust to them.
486. Kruth-lakshanaha:

He completely overlooks all faults in those who
totally surrender themselves to Him.

The Lord has the sudharsana chakra of
incomparable power to protect His devotees.
488. Sathvasthaha:

The Lord lives in the hearts of His devotees, making
it impossible to harbour evil thoughts.
489. Simhaha:

If necessary, He will punish those who ill-treat His
devotees.
490. Bhootha-maheswaraha:

He is the one who appoints all other divine beings
to their respective positions.

He is the First Being in the universe and created, or
caused to be created, all other divine beings.

He can play with the other divine beings as a child
does with dolls.

He is the master of all other divine beings.

He drank the juice of Soma as part of the sacrifice
after offering it to divine beings.

sacrifices become nectar to Him.

He is the conqueror of all (who oppose Him).

He can eliminate both internal and external

The lord confers total peace on those who are in

He leads those beings to eternal bliss in His

He helps yogis (wise beings) go through the various

He grants total peace (Saanthi) also to those who
follow the path of devotion (Bhakthi).

To those with an interest in a further life, He grants
a future life in accordance with their actions in the
present life.

He grants worldly comforts in accordance with

He makes sure that those who think they are total
masters of their own lives lead pitiable lives.

The Lord prescribes the boundaries within which
each one has to lead His or her life according to

He is the lord of the abode of Absolute Bliss
(Vaikunta).

He protects the irrevocable wheel of action and the
en[oymenL (or paln) of eaLlng Lhe frulL of ones
action.

He upholds Dharma (or right conduct) as the axis
on which the universe revolves.
602. Vrushapriyaha:

He is always pleased with good acts and good
behavior and confers rewards accordingly.

He ensures the return to tHis worldly life of those
who desire to return.
604. Niruthaathmaa:

He also helps those who do not want to return to
worldly life.

He causes further diminution in the wisdom of
those who desire to return to worldly life.

On the other hand, He grants growing knowledge
and wisdom to those that do not want to return to
worldly life.

He thus grants to each one what he or she desires.
608. Sreevathsa-vakshaaha:

He has the mark of Sreevathsam on His chest
(signifying the eternal presence of MahaaLakshmi
in His heart).

He is the permanent abode of MahaaLakshmi.

He is the appropriate consort of MahaaLakshmi.
611. Sreemathaam-varaha:

He was chosen by MahaaLaksmi Herself as Her

The lord is the source of life and power of

He is not easy to attain.

If necessary, He would not hesitate even to mislead

He could push His enemies into a net from which
there is no escape (so that He could overcome
them without bloodshed).

He could make worldy living seem even more
attractive than it is in order to keep enemies mired
in everyday problems.

He employed the above tricks to help His devotees
and friends (when they were in deep trouble).

He could perform great and small deeds to help His
devotees and to subdue their enemies.
794. Kruthakarmaa:

To keeo enemies under His spell, he too could
adopt their ways and tricks.

He has expounded various philosophical systems to
help various groups of people.

He appears to have overcome the attractions of
the worldly living (in His role as Buddha).

He appeared with a captivating form.

He thus charmed the hearts of ignorant beings to
believe His simplistic teachings.

He had a shining, attractive navel.

He had beautiful eyes.

He was worshipped as a great soul.

He thus encouraged unworthy beings in worldly
pleasuresto the detriment of their eventual

of non-violence.

He advanced a simplistic philosophy that won over

He could defeat in debate even very learned and
wise beings.

He could speak with authority that commanded
everyone's acceptance.

His knowledge was vast.
808. Sarva-vaakeeswaraha:

He could speak persuasively and incisively.
809. Mahaahruthaha:

He was like a cool, deep pool of water, a dip in
which clarified the minds of good beings and
further muddled the thinking of ignorant beings.

(Eventually) He punished those who were
persuaded by false arguments.
811. Mahaabhoothaha:

The Lord treats good beings as His own people.

He lends His rays and warmth to the Sun God (to
enable him to perform his functions).
832. Sapthajihvaha:

He is the one who eventually receives all the
offerings made to and through Agni, the God of
Fire.

He is the object of all Yagnyas for the good of the
world.

He is the owner of the seven horses that carry the
sun in his orbit.

His body is made of divine substances, not of

further on their achievements in their previous
birth towards realising Him.
859. Kshaamaha:

He makes sure that those who lead good lives do
not go unrewarded for their good deeds.
860. Suparnaha:

He encourages beings to continue their efforts
towards realisation in birth after birth until they
succeed.
861. Vaayuvaahanaha:

He helps His devotees overcome all adverse
circumstances in their path to His heavenly abode.
862. Dhanurdharaha:

The Lord always has His bow in His hand ready to
destroy all obstacles that hinder His devotees from
reaching Him.
863. Dhanurvedaha:

He is a master in the art of warfare with each and
every weapon, known and unknown to other
beings.
864. Dhandhaha:

Through the medium of good and decent rulers, He
enforces rules of conduct on others and punishes
evil-doers.
865. Dhamayithaa:

When necessary, He Himself directly takes on the
job of punishing evil beings.
866. Adhamaha:

He is not subordinate to any being.
867. Aparaajithaha:

His commands rule supreme without opposition.
868. Sarva-sahaha:

He supports other divine beings who act as His
agents.
869. Niyanthaa:

He allows less enlightened beings to pay homage to
other deities (who are His agents and hence
subordinate to Him).
870. Niyamaha:

For those beings, He dispenses rewards through
the respective deities in accordance with their
prayers.
871. Yamaha:

Even Yama, the Lord of Death, functions only as His
agent and in accordance with rules laid down by
Him.
872. Sathvavaan:

The Lord is the embodiment of all good qualities.
873. Sattvikaha:

He is the bestower of good qualities on other
beings in accodance with what each one deserves.
874. Sathyaha:


He is the unassailable rock of support for Truth and
Good.
875. Sathya-dharma-paraayanaha:

He is highly pleased by those who lead good lives
with no expectation of reward.
876. Abhipraayaha:

For such good souls, meditation on Him is itself the
reward they are happiest with.
877. Priyaarhaha:

He considers the devotee who mediates on Him
with no expectation of any other reward as the
dearest and most valuable of beings.
878. Arhaha:

He is, and He makes sure He is, worthy of their
devotion.
879. Priyakruth:

In the case of other devotees, He helps them
realise their immediate worldly desires and
gradually coverts them into devotees with no other
interest than attaining Him.
880. Preethi-vardhanaha:

He helps His devotees mature over time by
revealing Himself gradually.
881. Vihaayasagathihi:

At the crucial moment the Lord Himself is the path
to His abode, Vaikunta.
882. Jyothihi:

He is the light that shows thevarious steps to
emancipation.
883. Suruchihi:

He causes the Sun to rise every morning.
884. Huthabhuk-vibhuhu:

He is also the Lord of the Moon.
885. Ravihi:

He causes the movement of the Sun from the north
to the south and back again, during the year each
year, to produce the change of seasons.
886. Virochanaha:

He is the Lord of Time.
887. Sooryaha:

He is the Lord of Vaayu, the Wind God, who
ensures the movement of air in the earth's
atmosphere.
888. Savithaa:

He ensures rainfall so that plants and other beings
could survive and flourish.
889. Ravi-lochanaha:

He is the Lord of all that causes changes in nature.
890. Anantha-huthabhuk-bhokthaa:

The Lord's abode, Vaikuntham, can be reached
after passing Indraa's abode (as the eleventh step)
and Brahmaa's abode (as the twelfth step).
891. Sukhathaha:

Thereafter, the emancipated souls are led through
the thirteenth step top the Lord's abode,
Vaikuntham.
892. Naikathaha:


The souls are finally welcomed to enjoy supreme
bliss with the Lord.
893. Agrajaha:

They then see the Lord in all His glory.
894. Anir-vinnnaha:

The Lord then ceases to worry about each soul thus
emancipated.
895. Sathaa-marshee:

The emancipated souls serve the Lord in any way
He may wish to employ them.
896. Lokaa-dhishtaanam:

The Lord supports the worlds where emancipated
souls dwell.
897. Athbhuthaha:

The emancipated souls experience new joy as the
Lord's many-splendoured qualities unfold
themselves.
898. Sanaath:

The emancipated souls enjoy His company.
899. Sanaathana-thamaha:

Although He is permanent, the Lord's presence
appears like new all the time.
900. Kapilaha:

The lord looks like dark-blue clouds surrounded by
lighting.
901. Kapi-ravyayaha:

He confers permanent pleasure on emancipated
souls.
902. Swasthidhaha:

The Lord grants them all auspicious things.
903. Swathikruth:

He thus gives them infinite pleasure.
904. Swasthee:

He Himself embodies all auspicious things in the
universe.
905. Swasthibhuk:

He protects all auspicious things from destruction
and deteriotion.
906. Swasthi-dhakshinaha:

He grants them powers and faculties necessary to
enjoy life in His abode and to save Him when called
upon.
907. Aroudhraha:

He is full of all possible good qualities to balance
His vibrant and magnetic personality that may
otherwise appear overpowering.
908. Kundalee:

He is adorned by beautiful earrings.
909. Chakree:

He holds in His hands the Sudarsana Chakra and
other weapons (always ready to help His devotees).
910. Vikramee:

His majesty is matched by His deeds.
911. Oorjitha-saasanaha:

His wishes cannot be violated by any other being,
divine or others.

912. Sapthaathika:

Words are inadequate to describe Him.
913. Sapthasahasa:

He suffers incredible agony when any of His
devotees has to cry out in pain for His help.
914. Sisiraha:

When He hears such cries for help, He rushes at
once to help His devotees.
915. Sarvareekaraha:

He has in His hands all the weapons needed to
provide succour.
916. Akrooraha:

He not only rescues the suffering devotees but also
tries to save the offending party out of the
kindness of His heart.
917. Pesalaha:

He continues to look as charming as ever even
when His dress and decorations are disturbed
while He is engaged in helping His devotees.
918. Dakshaha:

He always goes at once to the help of His devotees.
919. Dakshinaha:

He consoles His devotees for sufferings before He
could help them.
920. Kshaminaam-varaha:

He is always composed and cool.
921. Vidwatthamaha:

He knows everything there is to know.
922. Veethabhayaha:

His appearance itself is enough to remove the
devotee's fear.
923. Punya-sravana-keerthana:

Just listening to the account of His rescue of one of
His devotees (Gajendraa, the elephant) is sufficient
to ensure the listener's emancipation.
924. Utthaaranaha:

The lord pulled both the elephant and the alligator
out of the lake.
925. Dushkrithahaa:

He then killed the evil alligator.
926. Punyaha:

He saves from the ills of this world even those who
only hear and talk about this event.
927. Dus-swapna-naasanaha:

Those who who listen to this story will have no bad
dreams.
928. Veerahaa:

He slew the tormentor of Gajendraa, the elephant.
929. Rakshanaha:

He protects His devotees in many different ways.
930. Santhaha:

The Lord never lets down those that have faith in
Him.
931. Jeevanaha:

He gave emancipation even to the evil alligator He
killed.

932. Parya-vasthithaha:

He acts like an armour to those He loves.
933. Anantha-roopaha:

He can take many forms.
934. Ananthasreehee:

He bestows many things on His devotees.
935. Jitha-manyuhu:

He has conquered anger.
936. Bhayaa-pahaha:

He destroys fear from our hearts and minds.
937. Chathurasraha:

He can accomplish speedily and without fuss what
He sets out to do.
938. Gabeeraathmaa:

He is like an ocean that cannot be fathomed.
939. Vithisaha:

He is beyond anyone's mental reach.
940. Vyaathisaha:

He rewards His devotees according to their needs
and deserts.
941. Disaha:

He teaches other divine beings how to perform
their functions.
942. Anaathihi:

Even Brahmaa and other divine beings cannot fully
comprehend His unique greatness.
943. Bhoorbhuvaha:

He accepts as a part of Himself devotees who have
understood themselves.
944. Lakshmeehee:

He Himself constitutes all the possessions His
devotees need.
945. Suveeraha:

He helps His devotees successfully survive all
dangers.
946. Ruchi-raangathaha:

He allows His devotees to enjoy gazing at His
indescribably beautiful figure.
947. Jananaha:

He makes sure even non-devotees are born with
faculties capable of comprehending Him (if they
try).
948. Jana-janmaathihi:

He helps them to realise Him and thus fulfil the
purpose of their birth.
949. Bheemaha:

He punishes those who do not recognise or spurn
His efforts to help them with further lives in this
world.
950. Bheema-paraakramaha:

His valour and srength are incredible and
decimation to His enemies.
951. Aadhaara-nilayaha:

He is the essential support of great souls whose
existence and lives support the rest of the world.

952. Dhaathaa:

He not only preaches but also leads the good life as
an example to others.
953. Pushpahaasaha:

He shines like a blossoming flower to those that
can see Him.
954. Prajaakaraha:

He guards His devotees night and day, and in
between too.
955. Oordhwagha:

He is above all other beings and things in the
universe.
956. Sathpathaa-chaaraha:

He Himself encourages devotees to follow the good
path.
957. Praanathaha:

He instils life in souls that have lost their sensitivity
from excessive immersion in worldly pleasures.
958. Pranavaha:

He makes the souls aware of the permanent bond
between them and Him.
959. Panaha:

When necessary, He becomes the servant of His
devotees.
960. Pramaanam:

He has expounded clearly that truths underlying
the Vedhaas.
961. Praananilayaha:

He is like an enormous capge to which all liberated
souls go.
962. Praana-druth:

He cares for the surrendered souls with motherly
love.
963. Praana-jeevanaha:

Like food, He helps beings grow (in wisdom and
maturity).
964. Thathvam:

He is present everywhere in the universe.
965. Thathva-vith:

He knows everything.
966. Ekaathmaa:

He is both the ruler and the sustainer of all things.
967. Janma-mrithyu-jaraathigaha:

He is beyond the birth-death cycle.
968. Bhoobhuvas-vastharuhu:

He supports the lives of all beings in the universe.
969. Thaaraha:

He helps us go through our worldly lives.
970. Savitaa:

He is the ultimate creator of everything.
971. Prapithaamaha:

He is the great-grandfather of all divine and human
beings (Brahmaa is considered the grandfather).
972. Yagnyaha:


In the case of those who lack material things to
offer Him in worship, He is satisfied with their
merely praying to Him.
973. Yahnyapathihi:

He responds to His devotees' prayers.
974. Yajwaa:

He himself performs prayers on behalf of those
who are physically incapacitated.
975. Yagnyaangaha:

He considers prayers and offerings from those
endowed with both strength and wealth as inferior
to the above.
976. Yagnyavaahanaha:

The Lord enables His devotees to complete their
prayers successfully.
977. Yagnyabruth:

The Lord compensates for any deficiencies in the
performance of Yagnyas (special prayers) by the
devotees if they meditate on Him.
978. Yagnyakruth:

He established the Yagnya prayer form.
979. Yagnyee:

He is the One for whom all Yagnyaas are
performed.
980. Yagnyabhuk:

He enjoys this form of prayer.
981. Yagnya-saadhanaha:

He has established this as one path for reaching
Him.
982. Yagnyakuhyam:

Although He needs none of the offerings, He is
pleased with Yagnyaas.
983. Annam:

He is the nectar to those who have realised Him.
984. Annaatha-eva-cha:

He treats those who worship Him as treasures.
985. Aathmayonihi:

The Lord ensures the total union of the
emancipated soul with Himself.
986. Swayamjaathaka:

He takes an incarnation of His own volition (to
protect good beings).
987. Vaikaanaha:

He then removes worldly sufferings from His
devotees.
988. Saamagaayanaha:

He is full of joy when liberated souls join Him.
989. Devaki-nandanaha:

He is the son of Devaki (in His incarnation as
Krishnaa when He is verily MahaaVishnu in all His
splendour).
990. Srashtaa:

He created the universe.
991. Kshitheechaha:

He is the Lord of the Universe.

992. Paapanaasanaha:

He removes all sins and stains from His devotees.
993. Sanghabruth:

He holds in His hand the conch Paancha-janyaa (to
inform His devotees and to warm all those that
harass them that He is on His way to help the
former and destroy the latter).
994. Nandakee:

He wears Nandaki, the sword.
995. Chakree:

He has Sudarsanaa, the discus.
996. Saarnga-dhanvaa:

He possesses Saarnga, the incomparable bow.
997. Gadhaadharaha:

He also has Kowmodaki, the mace.
998. Rathaangapaanihi:

He holds the all-powerful Sudarsanaa ever ready to
destroy evil beings.
999. Akshobhyaha:

He always protects those who seek refuge with
Him.
1000. Sarva-praharanaa-yuthaha:

The Lord is ever ready to fight evil and protect the
