one of my best issues
! feel, particularly with
everything going on
in my life then. This
time last year is also
when my father, age
79, was succumbing
to a lengthy battle
with congestive heart
disease and a slew of
other ailments that
claimed his life on Feb.
20th. ! can't believe it's almost been an entire year since he
passed. ! still miss him very much.
Ny dad never had a weight issue; his body's engine revved
so high he could eat whatever he wanted and not gain an
ounce. Ny mom, on the other hand, wasn't built the same.
Before she got tonsillar cancer in 2008 and went through
treatment that ultimately left her scarred with no taste buds
or saliva glands, she had put on quite a bit of weight - to the
point of having diabetes. Post cancer, she is remaining at 130
pounds and is in great health.
Ny parents are excellent examples to me in so many ways,
the most of which are hghting for what they want and hghting
for life despite the odds. Ny mother had a feeding tube in for
more than hve years that she used to get her nutrition from
canned formula. Doctors told her she would always have to
do this, but one day sheer determination took over and she
removed that feeding tube herself (please don't get any ideas,
she probably should have gone to the doctor for this). She
was tired of living life dependent on a tube to feed her and
encumbering her from hugging people for fear they might hurt
her by hitting her tube. She was also determined to get her
saliva glands and taste buds back and !'m happy to say that
they are coming back!!!!
With my mom on the road to eating normally, she asked me
for advice on how to eat healthy. ! gave her advice based on
years of learning, being an editor in chief for this magazine and
reading about the proper way to eat. But honestly, the best
advice you can get comes from the Certihed Fitness Nutrition
Coaches at Nax Nuscle. These men and women are educated
on how to help people achieve healthy eating as a lifestyle and
not a short-term hx.
This issue is our last for the weight-loss quarter and ! hope
that these pages hll you with knowledge on what to do to get
your weight back on track. Do yourself a favor though, visit

is the best approach for you. Like my dad who never gained
weight and my mom who was overweight (both eating the

TEAM MAX TITLE FIGHT TO
AIR ON SHOWTIME!
Team Max Muscle's Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KOs), ghting out
of Riverside, California, was one of the boxing's most underrated
competitors and was on his way up the 140-pound ladder. When
he defeated current WBO junior welterweight world champion
Ruslan Provodnikov in January of 2011, the word was out on this
super lightweight secret weapon. Mike Dallas Jr., Ji-Hoon Kim and
Miguel Angel Huerta have also fallen against the 33-year-old veteran.
On March 15th, Herrera will get his long-awaited shot at a world
championship.
Garcia vs. Herrera, is a 12-round Super Lightweight
Championship ght for Garcias WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine
titles, and will take place Saturday, March 15 at the Coliseo Ruben
Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The ght is sponsored by
Corona and AT&T. This event will be televised live on Showtime.

FIGHTING WITH PRIDE
Max Muscle Stockton sponsored athlete Gabriel Flores recently competed in
the Pikes Peak International tournament in Colorado Springs. Gabriel beat
two nationally ranked Jr. Golden Gloves ghters to win his fourth National
Title. Gabriel will compete in World Ringside World Championships
competing with ghters around the world this August in Tennessee.

Max Muscle Marin partnered with TRIMORE Fitness, a triathlon training
society, in order to marry the perfect t of intense training with proper
nutrition. To get TRIMORE members on track for competition season this year,

RAISE FOOD FOR MODESTO
Alan Sanchez rode a bike for four hours without stopping in an effort to raise canned
food donations for the local community. The event was held at Max Muscle Modesto
(California) on April 28, 2013 and was a huge success. Thanks to all the Max Muscle
customers who stopped by to drop food off, as well as Alan's loyal fans who came by
to wish him a happy 30th birthday. We had tons of samples thanks to the vendors who
came out, including Johnny Garcia from Farmer's Insurance, Dan Clark from Elite Health
Club Promotions, Sarah from FreeBirds Burrito (who provided refreshments), The Velvet
Grill & Creamery (which launched an amazing chocolate ice cream with 40g protein per
scoop), Pro Wrestling Bushido and more. We had a great time for a great cause. We even
got a visit from the Mayor of Modesto and Alan's mom stopped by to say hi.

Q: What inspired you to compete in
your rst gure competition?
A: I had just come out of a traumatic
relationship and spent a good 2 months
or so in a pretty big depression. I was
exhausted of being sad, tired of feeling
never quite good enough, and wanted
desperately to change. I decided to focus
on being completely selsh for once. I
knew the re was lit; I just needed help
to fuel it! I was going to better myself
in every way: mentally, physically,
emotionally and spiritually. I was going
to revamp Nicole. Best thing I ever did!
Absolutely no regrets!
Q: What did you learn about yourself
through your contest prep journey?
A: My sister Natalee always said that

theres power in knowing you did it!
And she was right! I learned that there is
nothing holding me back but myself, and
my own fears. If I can conquer fear, then I
can conquer failure! Im an overcomer!
No matter what obstacles were ung my
way (and boy were there) I overcame
them! Ive gained not only knowledge
of the nutritional supplements and why I
was taking them, but gained knowledge
of portion sizes, healthy eating and I can
cook now too!
Q: Would you do it again?
A: I fell in love with the hard work, the
friendships, the schedule, the dedication
and gained self-esteem that no one
can take away! Off season prep is
underway, and looking forward to my
next competition in August!

to understand that more (both intensity and
length of time) is not always better. I have

Protein is a very popular word
when you begin to train consistently.
Anyone who mentors you will
immediately begin teaching you about
the importance of protein. He or she
will explain about all the sources such

soy and whey, etc! Then your mentor
will follow up with some dosage or
gram amounts based on your training
intensity, health and weight. It can get
a little overwhelming in the beginning,
but in the end, it is really based on
some simple rules that enables your
body to build and repair muscle
tissue.
Whenever I work with young
athletes or beginners I take the time
to explain the importance of protein,
but more importantly what protein
does. If beginners understand how
and why protein works, they begin to
understand the importance of timing
your protein and that it can literally
mean gaining 2-3 times more muscle
over a given period of time.
When protein is digested by our
bodies it is converted to nitrogen
within the bloodstream. When our
blood has a positive nitrogen level,
we can build and repair muscle tissue
DQG FHOOV PXFK PRUH HIFLHQWO\ 7KH
timing comes into play because as
protein is digested and nitrogen is
created, it only lasts for 3-4 hours
after you consume it. If your body
needs additional healing and you have
FOREVERYOUNG
not eaten protein for 5-6 hours and your
body needs to build and repair, it will
utilize lean muscle mass to convert to
nitrogen. This is the last thing any of us
want!
By learning exactly why we need to
consume protein 4 to 6 times per day,
you empower your decision making
process because now you know that
by getting more protein you optimize
nitrogen in the bloodstream and promote
lean muscle gains! You can double or
even triple your results depending on
how much protein you were previously
consuming.
So now that you have a basic
understanding of why you need multiple
servings of protein to maximize lean
muscle mass, let's discuss how much
and when are the best times to take it.
The range that is generally accepted by
experts is 15-35 grams per serving. So
if youre a 100-pound male or female,
aim for the lower target, and if youre a
250-pound athlete, aim for the higher
side of the scale.
These numbers are a general guide
to help you get the most bang for your
buck as protein is the most expensive
nutrient you eat daily. Of course if you
have any health issues check with your

Here is a recipe for one of my favorite
shakes to help you add a couple more
servings of high quality protein per day.
Strawberry & Banana Protein Milk Shake
Ingredients Calories Protein
8 ounces low-fat Milk 120 8
banana 50 .5
1 cup frozen strawberries 70 1
serving of Vit-Acell 23 0

Directions: Place all of the above ingredients
in a blender and blend for 30 seconds or
until smooth and creamy. You can add
water/ice or your preferred beverage to

Another Reason To Do Your 'D'

Most of us know that vitamin D helps to protect our bones. But research has
shown that this vitamin, synthesized by your body in response to UVB radiation
from sun exposure, acts in many complex ways to prevent disease and promote
health. One recent study published in the journal Molecular Endocrinology examines
the molecular effect of vitamin D on the blood vessels, concluding that it helps to
promote blood vessel elasticity and a healthy cardiovascular system.
According to the researchers, vitamin D stimulates production of an enzyme in
the inner layers of the blood vessels that is responsible for the relaxation of smooth
muscles. If there is a deciency of this vitamin, there is too little of the enzyme, and
ultimately, the blood vessels become less exible a condition that can lead to high
blood pressure and other circulatory problems.
How to do your D? While sunshine is the best answer, many people live in
latitudes too far north for sufcient sunshine to produce vitamin D. Even in more
southerly climates, application of sunscreen and use of other sun protection, such
as clothing and hats,
blocks the bodys sun-
synthesizing abilities.
For best results, eat lots
of foods rich in vitamin
D, such as shiitake
and button mushrooms,
sockeye salmon, tuna,

Researchers from the Department
of Psychology at the University of
Toronto Scarborough in Canada
say that it is as simple as changing
your motivational priorities with
pleasant thoughts.
According to the scientists,
when we are tired, were not very
motivated to work for the things
we feel obligated to do. But we are
willing, even when were exhausted
and our self control feels weak, to
do those things that we like to do.
The upshot? If you try to
summon up positive feelings about
the task at hand such as the
sense of accomplishment youll feel
after a workout, or the pleasure

youre more inclined to boost your
self control and hit the gym.

These days, we see warnings on everything, from health risks associated with tobacco and alcohol
consumption to safety warnings on a multitude of consumer products. But do warnings actually
inuence consumer behavior? Yes and no, according to a recent study.
The study found that consumers who read a warning label just prior to considering a purchase tend
to heed the warning, resulting in fewer purchases of the product. But if the warning is read several
weeks or more prior to the purchase, it actually has the opposite effect on consumer behavior. Over
time, a warning can lead to greater trust of a product because the consumer focuses on the fact
that the manufacturer has presented all of the relevant information about the product, rather than
focusing upon the warning itself.

DIY TESTING
Want to know the best time of the
month to conceive, or whether your
partners sperm count is high enough
to do so? Whether you have a urinary
tract infection or a yeast infection?
Whether your child is using drugs?
These days, all it takes is a few drops
of blood, urine or semen, or a snippet
of hair, to nd the answers right in the
privacy and convenience of your own
bathroom. From identifying your blood
type to detecting evidence of HIV, colon
or rectal cancer, theres an at-home
medical test kit available at your nearest
pharmacy to assist you.
According to the National
Institutes of Health, one of the
earliest written records of home testing
was a urine-based pregnancy test
used in ancient Egyptian times. The
papyrus document describes a test in
which a woman was able to determine
pregnancy by urinating on wheat
and barley seeds over the course of
several days. If the barley grew, it
meant that she was carrying a male
child; the wheats growth indicated
a female. And if neither grain grew,
she was not pregnant. Although the
ancient Egyptian test was unlikely to
have had the 97-99 percent accuracy
claimed by manufacturers of present

to the public in 1978, like todays kits,

error, which changes the accuracy of
the test, she said.
And while you may think that its

conhrm a diagnosis and any medication
you may need.
And if the home test is negative?
You may get a false sense of security,
said Dr. Agarwal.
Just because the test result
is negative at the moment, she
explained, doesnt mean that it is truly
negative. For example, an HIV test kit
measures the cells that your bodys
immune system produces (antibodies)
in response to being infected with the
human immunodehciency virus. This
antibody response may take up to
three months, or perhaps even longer,
to become detectable in body huids.
So if youve been infected with the HIV
virus and test yourself a month after
the virus enters your body, you may
get a negative result on the test yet
still be infected.
Still, under the right circumstances,
home medical test kits can be helpful,
said Florence Comite, MD, a Manhattan
based endocrinologist and author of
mens health book, Keep It Up. As
people get more involved in their own
health, these test kits can help them
take better care of themselves, she
claimed. But the crucial issue is that
with testing, there are often treatment
decisions to make, sometimes difhcult
decisions. This must be done in
conjunction with a trusted health care
professional.
Dr. Agarwal agreed that home
testing is useful in situations where
there is already a diagnosis and
need for monitoring a chronic health
condition at home in between physician
visits. This includes glucose testing
for diabetes, or urinary tract infection
testing if you get frequent infections
THE KITS
Self diagnostic kits may either be Test Kits, where
you collect the sample, perform the test and read the
results yourself, or Collection Kits, where you collect a
sample, mail it to a laboratory and receive the results via
phone or mail. While there are numerous test kits available
in the United States, three popular ones are:
The Test: Allergy Test, My
Allergy Test by Immunetech, FDA

How it Works: Use provided
lancet to collect a few drops of
blood into a test tube, then mail
the sample to a certihed lab to be
tested for 10 common allergens,
including egg, milk, wheat, mold, dust mites, cat,
ragweed, cedar and two types of grasses. Results are
mailed to you or you may log on to a website to receive
them.
%HQHWV If you wonder what causes that drippy nose
and watery eyes you get every spring, or if you wonder
why every time you go to your cat-loving friends house
you get a stuffy nose and a headache, you may be
able to get some answers. You may also want to know
whether you really have allergies before spending
money on an allergist.
Limitations: There are a huge range of possible
allergens, and the kit only tests for the 10 most
common allergens.
The Test: Urinary Tract Infection Kit,
including AZO Test" by Amereht and
Reveal by Reveal, FDA cleared
Cost: $10-20, depending upon product.
Available at CVS, Walmart, Walgreens,
Target and other drugstores
How it Works: Dip a test strip into a sample of urine,
or urinate onto the strip. Read results in 1-2 minutes.
Test determines whether there are nitrites or leukocytes
(white blood cells) in urine, both of which can be
present when you have a urinary tract infection.
%HQHWV Can be useful for determining whether your
urinary tract infection is responding to the medication
you were prescribed, or for early detection of urinary
tract infections if you get frequent ones and are working
with a physician to treat them.
Limitations: In some circumstances, you can have
a negative result even if you have a urinary tract
infection. Negative results in the presence of symptoms
of a urinary tract infection may also indicate a more
serious problem, such as a kidney stones or a tumor.
The Test: Male Fertility Test,
SpermCheckFertility by

Cost: $40, available online at

available in drugstores beginning

How it Works: Combine a
semen sample with solution in a
bottle, then put drops of the mix
on a test strip. The test looks for
number of sperm, with a positive
or normal result or a negative or
low sperm count displayed in about 10 minutes.
%HQHWV Although male factors contribute to infertility
problems much of the time, many men fail to seek
medical testing due to embarrassment. Testing at home
for normal or abnormal sperm count can rule out one
aspect of infertility.
Limitations: While sperm count is an important
indicator of male fertility, the motility and viability
of sperm is also important, neither of which the test
measures.

TIPS FOR AT HOME MEDICAL TESTING
Its important to use home medical testing kits safely and properly. Here
are some tips from the U.S. Public Health Service and the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA):
Buy your test kit from a reputable pharmacy or drugstore so you know that the kit has
been cleared by the FDA. Some online sites sell test kits that are unapproved, which may
not be accurate.
Check the expiration date on the home testing kit package before using, and dont
use it if it has expired.
Store your testing kit properly according to directions; exposure to extreme conditions
may cause product deterioration.
Understand what the test is meant to do and not meant to do; tests are not always
100 percent accurate.
Read the testing instructions thoroughly before using the kit. Be aware of special
instructions, such as avoiding certain foods before testing or using your rst morning urine
for the test.
If you dont understand how to use the kit, call the 800 number on the package, or
ask your pharmacist or your health care provider.
Follow the instructions exactly; dont skip steps.
Use an accurate timing device for tests that require timing.
Report positive results to your health care provider and ask for follow up advice.
If results are negative and you still have symptoms or concerns, see your health care
provider.

The upshot? If youre intrigued by
the thought of home medical tests,
it may be good to have a discussion
with your doc, who can explain the
pros and cons of using them, help

understand and participate in their
own health care, said Dr. Comite. And
as a physician, I like that idea. But
using a test alone in a vacuum can be
overwhelming and frightening and
can do more harm than good. There

Getting a set of lean, sexy abs is the

Consider these ve steps to avoid burnout, nd empowerment and create a more balanced life.

Americans spend almost 12 hours per
day in front of screens. That includes
5 hours at the computer, laptop or
mobile device and almost 4 hours
in front of the TV, according to a 2013
study by research hrm eNarketer. With
so much of our lives spent watching
and consuming its no wonder doing
and being get pushed to the wayside.
In our modern, 24/7 constantly
on world, [unplugging] is even
more important [than ever], says Dr.
Nladen Golubic, Nedical Director for
Cleveland Clinics Center for Lifestyle
Nedicine. Setting aside time, even 10
minutes a day, away from our devices
and spending that time quietly
like meditating - can have benehts
like positive hormonal changes and
increased brain size, says Golubic.
Tip: Challenge yourself to take
conscious breaks. Start small, like 20
minutes per day. Go for a walk outside,
meditate or do your favorite non-
screen activity (cooking, gardening,
working on your car, etc.). Push
yourself and try it for one whole day.
Then one whole weekend! See how
you feel and take note how it affects
your lifestyle.
EAT SMART
We all need to eat. This is one aspect

would we not eat foods that support

far happier when we feel good about

Tip: Eating smart isnt about
deprivation, but about making better
choices. At breakfast try a bowl of

of grabbing that sugary donut. If you
really want a hamburger, consider
skipping the bun (ask for it protein
style" - wrapped in lettuce). Opt for
your favorite iced-blended coffee drink
sugar-free and with skim milk. Good

'YOU' TIME
Naking time for yourself is probably
one of the hardest things to do
when youre constantly on the go.
But carving out alone time is key

day in any form - walking, running,
swimming, biking, etc.," says Cleveland

Challenge, my workouts were exhausting

had a really hard time believing this would
work. I was afraid that weight lifting would
make me bigger, and I wanted to get lean.
So trusting him, I started intense weight
training with heavy weights and perfect form,
with limited rest in between sets. It worked.
Not only was I getting stronger, but I started
rapidly losing inches and fat.
Noel explained to me the importance of
training the back. In addition to gaining
muscle strength, a sculpted back makes the
waist appear smaller, creating that V taper
you see on athletes. When I started training
I had no idea about sculpting; I trained all
muscles equally. But I soon learned that

I want to emphasize that you will hit a
plateau, and your results will stall. Dont give

style of training consisting of heavy weights
and limited rest, I started seeing results

to train now. I love the results, the increased
energy and how good I feel after this intense
back/biceps routine.

Wide-Grip Lat Pull-Downs
Adjust the weight on the lat pull-down machine
to a level where its challenging but you can
safely achieve the full range of motion. Grip
the bar wider than shoulder-width apart, palms
facing away from the body. Pull the bar down,
with a slow controlled movement until it reaches
chin level. Pause for a moment at this position,
and slowly raise the bar back up while keeping
control of the bar. Do 3 sets of 10 reps
T-Bar Rows
Load the end of the
bar with plates heavy
enough that the weight is
challenging and you can
safely achieve the full
range of motion. Straddle
the T-Bar so that your legs
are on either side of the
bar. Bend from the hips
so that your torso is at a
45-degree angle to the
oor. Grip the handles on
the bar. While keeping
the natural arch in your
lower back, raise the bar
up until the plate reaches

One-Arm Dumbbell Rows
On the oor next to the at bench, rest a dumbbell
heavy enough to be challenging, and will allow
you to safely achieve the full range of motion. On
the at bench, place one knee up on the bench
and place the other foot on the oor for support,
with a wide stance. Keeping your back parallel to
the oor, slowly pick up the dumbbell, using your
free hand for support on the bench. After you have
the dumbbell in your grip, lift the weight up slowly
with a controlled movement up to your side. Slowly
lower it back down until your arm is fully extended.

Adjust the incline bench to a 45-degree angle. Grab two dumbbells that
are heavy enough to be challenging but will allow you have full range
of motion, arms hanging at your sides. Keeping your head back on the

to shoulder level, keeping your elbows still. Slowly lower the weight back

so pumped up to read what other
people are doing and how they
are bettering their lives every day.
Every time I log on, I see people
motivating each other and saying
kind words to keep others going.
Ive had the privilege to talk to a
handful of people on MyMaxMuscle
and every time I read a message
about how somebody else is doing
one more thing to improve his/her
life, it just gives me goose bumps.

something that changed the way
I look at my accomplishments. He

That statement not only
motivated me beyond any words but
it made me cry and then work out

This notion is what resonated with
+9-year-old Brian Cady from Albany,
!llinois as he set his mind to compete in
the 2013 NaxForm Life Challenge and
lose the excess weight he'd accumulated
over the past few years.
For Brian, deciding the competition
was just something he was going to do
became the key to making his dream
come true. He realized he'd been using
his age as an excuse. Self-defeating
thoughts like, ! am too old to get back
into shape" or ! am too old to compete
with younger folks in the challenge" had
been holding him back from committing
to his health and htness. That is, until
his friend Nark Dann convinced him
anything is possible.
Nark convinced Brian that Nax Nuscle
supplements were great and that he
could do this if he set his mind to it.
That is exactly what Brian did.
Brian worked with Nax Nuscle
Bettendorf, !owa franchisees Scott and
Karen Herkes and quickly realized why

Karen, who is a CFNC, helped Brian
drop from 228 pounds and 27 percent

pounds and only 11 percent body fat
by the end of June of 2013. To get
there, Brian consumed six small meals
consisting of lean protein, healthy fats
and a balance of complex carbs each

Brian says having a nutrition coach
made all the difference in the world.
He realized healthy eating didn't mean
deprivation. !n fact, he never tired of

Danya Johnson, 29, from Fredericksburg,
Virginia had lived through the
unthinkable. Still a very young man, hed
endured the traumatic pain of losing
his wife unexpectedly in an accident.
Grief immobilized him sending him into
a deep dark space that was physically,
mentally and emotionally difhcult to
come out of. Two years later, a chance
at a dream career opportunity helped
him hnd his way back. The journey back
was as challenging as the MaxForm Life
Challenge itself, but along the way Danya
turned his life around for the better.
A law enforcement professional, Danya
had hnally reached a breaking point in
October 2012. Depression, a demanding
career, overwhelming grief and a crazy
work schedule had left him at an all
time low. When the scales topped 265
pounds and he realized every time he sat
on the couch to watch television and his
stomach was a table for the remote, he
knew he had to get moving.
Danya worked with Corry Matthews,
franchisee of the Manassas/Woodbridge
Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store, and
store manager Stephan Bynog for help
with meal planning, preparation and
proper supplementation. Hesitant to
sign up for the upcoming 2013 MaxForm
Life Challenge, Danya was encouraged
by Corry and Stephan to commit to the
challenge and use it to stay motivated
with his htness goals. !n the end, Danya

him stay on track with his goals and
workouts.

from 242 pounds down to 208 pounds
and reduced his body fat percentage
from 18.1 percent down to 8.9 percent
by following a 2,500 calorie plan (250g
protein, 200g carbs and 80g fat). As the
challenge neared its end, Bynog had
Danya cut this back to 2,000 calories,
increasing protein and reducing carbs to
maximize leaning out.
When Danya began his journey and
joined the challenge, only his co-workers,
mom and girlfriend knew what he was
doing. From December to March, Danya
made progress and after going on a
cruise in Narch he gained the conhdence
to share with a broader spectrum of his
friends and family what he was doing and
why. His friends and family were noticing
differences in him physically and mentally,
changes he still was struggling to see in
the mirror.
As Danya grew in conhdence, he
realized he had many supporters. After
the cruise, Danya started to see that it
was possible for him to earn the body
hed always wanted and that winning this
challenge was a goal worth hghting for.
With a renewed sense of purpose, a body
that was starting to emerge and life and
its inhnite possibilities, he set a new goal-
to be in the top 20 of the challenge.
!ncreasing his efforts and focusing
on clean nutrition, Danya started to see
he was stronger than he ever thought
he could be. Danya realized his career
dreams were actually possible and that
if he was willing to work for it, someday
the promotion he longed for could
become a reality. He realized that even
though he no longer had his wife behind
him pushing him he could achieve his
dreams. And, with the amazing support
of his friends, family and a team of 145
coworkers, he stepped up to the game
and got to work. He got back to life and
in doing so, overcame all the obstacles
and got in the best shape hed been in

Fifteen years ago, Michele
Sarrecchia suffered a near-tragic car
accident that sent her into emergency
surgery to repair a torn subclavian
artery. The day after her surgery, she
had a stroke. Recuperation took weeks
and outpatient physical therapy lasted
more than four years. Through it all
Michele decided she must not use
age, ailment or disability as an excuse.
Instead, she pushed herself every day
toward a positive outcome.
I had to learn to walk and talk
again, said Michele, now 55 years
old. The doctors told me that it would
help my recovery to take supplements
and work out every day. My trainer,
Eric Gibbs, inspired me to keep
working out and take care of myself.
That progressed into me pushing
myself enough to compete in a hgure
competition.
Nichele competed in her hrst hgure
competition in 2011 and won hrst place.
She attributes her recovery and triumph
to the support of her daughters, parents
and cousins. Now Nichele is a certihed
personal trainer who works to motivate
others to be healthy and achieve their
own goals.

In 2011, Richard Guevara found himself
at his heaviest weight of 260 pounds.
Simple tasks such as tying his shoelaces
left him struggling and short of breath.
With a family history of heart attack and
stroke, Richard had to make changes
in his life or possibly be faced with a
shortened one. Not only did he commit
himself to becoming healthier, but he
wanted to be a good example for his
loved ones. I wanted to motivate my
family and show them how to improve
their quality of life by changing mine,
he says.
The road was far from easy. Thanks
to his local Max Muscle store in San
Mateo, CA, Richard received guidance
on nutrition and exercise. He learned to
make better food choices and how to
prepare his own meals. Lean proteins
such as chicken, ground turkey, bison
and egg whites are staples in his meals
along with a variety of fresh fruit and
vegetables, and good carbs like brown
rice, sweet potatoes and oatmeal.
Richards exercise regimen is quick,
simple and easy to follow. I work out
in the mornings starting with cardio for
20-45 minutes followed by weights for
an hour, he says.
Today, Richards hard work and
dedication has paid off as hes lost
82 pounds and weighs a healthy 178
pounds. Losing the weight improved

with a better outlook on life. But, he
admits that there are days when its
hard to remain focused. When I dont
feel like going to the gym or eating
clean, I look back on how far Ive come
and the results Ive achieved that
keeps me striving for more.

In 2010, Joseph Villegas was seated in his barbers chair waiting for a haircut. My
barber could barely t his neck guard around my neck, he recalls. To put it nicely,
he told me that I needed to get in shape. Those blunt words were a wake-up call for
Joseph who weighed 323 pounds. I realized that I had gotten too comfortable with
myself and life, to the point where I wasnt monitoring myself at all.
Determined to get healthier, Joseph initially began his weight loss journey alone
and was plagued with challenges stemming from his insecurities. When I rst started
working out, I only went to the gym during off hours because I felt ashamed of myself
and how I looked, he says. But despite these issues, Joseph continued to push on.
He changed his eating habits and stayed away from pork, red meat, junk/
fast food, soda, candy and alcohol. Cleaning up his diet and working out were great
starts, but Joseph knew that he needed more help, so he enlisted the team at Max
Muscle San Mateo. His friend Mark Bautista also helped him to devise a workout plan.
As the weight came off, Josephs condence rose. Today, through consistency and
determination, hes lost 78 pounds and is still at it. He enjoys living a healthier life and
most importantly, is comfortable in his own skin.
Joseph, who lost his father to pancreatic cancer in 2006, says that he believes he
is living a life his father would be proud of. I am more accountable for myself, more
disciplined, and constantly pushing myself to be better while staying humble, he says.
Ive surrounded myself with supportive people who are open and honest with me and
Ive learned to seek help when I need it, especially when setting goals.

When Teresa Gillette has a goal, theres no stopping her! Respiratory therapist
by day and drummer for three different bands at night, once she set her mind
to get healthier, there was no turning back. I wanted to be able to meet
the physical demands of being a drummer and look good as a performer,
she says. However, at 321 pounds, she had her work cut out for her. And,
working in the health eld, Teresa knew that to lose weight and keep it off,
she had to do it the right way.

With Brian and Marquell by her side, Teresa has lost an amazing 133
pounds to date!
Choosing to stay t means that you have to change your lifestyle and not
let yourself fall back into old destructive habits, says Teresa. Losing weight
and living healthier has empowered me to accomplish anything I want to
do. Though she has 23 pounds left to lose to reach her goal, Teresas key
to success is her realistic approach to weight loss. She didnt rush, kept
consistent and enjoyed her progress along the way. The main point that
would be important for me to make is that weight loss can be done through
diet and exercise, she says. Other methods might get faster results, but to
maintain it, you have to adopt proper eating habits or youll gain it all back.
My diet is just a new way of life for me with an occasional splurge.
After he started to outgrow his 2XL sized clothing,
32-year-old Raymond Alcantar decided that hed
had enough. At 267 pounds, he was uncomfortable
and frustrated with his expanding waistline, but
knew that change was imminent. It got to the

I kept telling myself, one day I'll get

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Dice yams into small squares.
Consider using a cooking tool
for ease of dicing, if desired. Place
diced yams into large mixing bowl,
add spices and mix.
2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil
over medium heat on stove. Once
warm, add yam mixture to skillet.
Toss everything in skillet, allowing
yams to brown then cover skillet
to soften hash. (Approximately 15
minutes).
3. While yams cook, spray skillet
with non-stick cooking spray and
crack eggs (its easiest to cook two
eggs at a time). Cook on medium
low sunny-side up style (cooked
throughout with a soft/warm yolk.)
4. Divide hash onto four plates and
top each with a sunny-side up egg.
5. Add pepper to top if desired.

one way we can jump-start our
metabolism. Breakfast doesn't have to

While metabolism is as unique
as a ngerprint some people
are born with the ability to break
down food very fast and others
very slow there are other factors
to consider. Genetics and age
play a role, but diet, exercise
and lean body mass are very
important things that can be
controlled by the individual, says
Spetz. It is possible to speed up
your metabolism by building up
lean body mass and doing things
to reduce body fat mass, such as
eating a diet consisting of lean
protein, vegetables, fruits, low-fat
dairy, whole grains and healthy
fats. In addition, a combination
of strength and cardio exercise
also promotes fat loss and the
growth of lean mass. Simply
put, lean mass speeds up your
metabolism because this tissue
uses more energy than fat mass.
Is it true certain people can eat
whatever they want and not gain a single
pound? We've all met someone like that:
the super-skinny girl who can eat as many
hamburgers her heart (and stomach)
desires or that guy at the ofhce who,
despite going to every after-work cocktail
hour, never develops a beer belly.
What about the ones who struggle with
their weight? Are they just hard out of
luck with a slow, unforgiving metabolism?
Contrary to popular belief, a slow
metabolism is rarely the cause of weight
gain. Though your metabolism (the
process by which your body converts what
you eat and drink into energy) inhuences
your body's basic energy needs, it's your
food and beverage intake and amount of
physical activity that ultimately determines
how much you weigh.
Simply put, metabolism comes down to
math. !f energy consumption (calories)
equals energy production (through
exercise, for example), overall weight will
stay the same. Weight loss happens when
a person expends more energy than he
or she consumes. On the other hand, if
the body consumes more calories than it
burns, those calories will be stored as fat.

to pack on unwanted pounds.
It seems like every other day there
is a new food, powder or tea being
advertised as a metabolism booster,
says Spetz. While some studies
have shown that very spicy foods
can increase metabolism, the boost
wont last more than a half hour and
the rate of metabolism will be back
where it started. The same is true of
green tea, though noteworthy for its
wealth of antioxidants, any spike in
metabolic rate will be merely a blip
on the radar and not a permanent

Scientists at the University of Central Florida, Human Performance Laboratory


set out to examine if Mediator Phosphatidic Acid (PA) can enhance strength,
muscle thickness and lean tissue. Sixteen men were randomly assigned to
either a group that consumed 750 mg of Mediator
Phosphatidic Acid per day or a placebo during an
8 week resistance training program. During each
testing session subjects were assessed for strength
and body composition. Results showed the
subjects ingesting Mediator Phosphatidic Acid
demonstrated a 12.7% increase in squat strength
and a 2.6% increase in lean body mass during the
testing period. Phosphatidic acid has been reported
to activate the mammalian target of rapamycin
(mTOR) signaling pathway resulting in enhancing
the anabolic effects of resistance training.

Nutrition (ISSN) bases the following
position stand on a critical analysis
of the literature on the use of beta-
hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB)
as a nutritional supplement. The
ISSN has concluded the following.
1. HMB can be used to enhance
recovery by attenuating exercise
induced skeletal muscle damage in
trained and untrained populations.
2. If consuming HMB, an athlete
will benet from consuming the
supplement in close proximity to
their workout. 3. HMB appears to be
most effective when consumed for
2 weeks prior to an exercise bout.
4. 38 mg/kg body mass/day of HMB
has been demonstrated to enhance
skeletal muscle hypertrophy, strength
and power in untrained and trained
populations when the appropriate
exercise prescription is utilized. 5.
Currently, two forms of HMB have
been used: Calcium HMB (HMB-
CA) and a free acid form of HMB-
FA. HMB-FA may increase plasma
absorption and retention of HMB
to a greater extent than HMB-CA.
However, research with HMB-FA is
in its infancy, and there is not enough
research to support whether one
form is superior. 6. HMB has been
demonstrated to increase LBM and
functionality in elderly, sedentary
populations. 7. HMB ingestion in
conjunction with a structured exercise
program may result in greater
declines in fat mass (FM). 8. HMBs
mechanisms of action include an
inhibition and increase of proteolysis
and protein synthesis, respectively. 9.
Chronic consumption of HMB is safe
in both young and old populations.

In the context of caloric restriction-based weight loss,


researchers at the Center for Translational Research in
Aging and Longevity hypothesized that a meal replacement
formula would foster the retention of lean tissue and
promote the preferential loss of adipose tissue. Scientists
recruited and randomized 12 elderly individuals to an 8
week, caloric restriction diet utilizing equivalent caloric
meal replacements (800 kcal/day) or a competitive meal
replacement in conjunction with 400 kcal of solid food that
totaled 1200 kcal/day. Results showed that both groups
lost approximately 7 precent of total body weight with the
meal replacement group showing a greater reduction in
adipose tissue. Researchers concluded that a low calorie
meal replacement provides effective weight loss and the
preferential reduction of body fat and the modest loss of lean
