LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL

8 March 2011

Engr. Mary Ann E. Latina School of EE-ECE-CpE Mapua Institute of Technology Intamuros, Manila

Dear Engr. Latina: In conformity with the fulfillment of the requirements on the subject Electronics Laboratory 1, the proponents would like to present the actual prototype and documentation of a Power Supply, in accordance with your instructions. The main purpose of the document is to present a Power Supply which will produce an output of 8V with a load resistance of 500 to infinity. Enclosed in this letter is the documentation of the Power Supply Prototype. We hope that this proposal will meet your requirements.

Respectfully yours, AGTALAO, Marlo P. II MATSUSHITA, Sheila Strauss D. OMBRETE, Jan Herald G. RAMOS, Alvin John U.

OBJECTIVES The purposes for the construction of this Power Supply Prototype are:

To design a DC regulated power supply with a constant output of 8 using basic electronics components.

To be able to apply the theories, principles, and concepts learned from the courses, Electronics 1 Lecture and Laboratory.

To be able to connect the power supply designed in the breadboard and printed circuit board (PCB).

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION A usual power supply consists of transformer, rectifier, filter and regulator, which are integrated in the design and construction of our project. The main purpose of this project is to set a constant output of 8V DC with a load resistance of 500 to infinity into a breadboard and printed circuit board (PCB). First, the 220 V, 60 Hz AC supplied by the electric companies usually available in household outlets is converted to 12 V, 60 Hz AC with the aid of the transformer. The 12 V AC will then pass into the bridge type full-wave rectifier which was made by four 1N4002 rectifier diodes. The rectifier converts the AC Voltage to a full wave pulsating DC Voltage. A 10-ohm resistor is the Rsurge which protects the capacitor from being damaged. Then, a 330 F capacitor with 16V-capacity acts as a filter and outputs very small ripple voltage from the rectified voltage to produce a relatively smooth DC voltage. The 60-ohm resistor was then used to protect the Zener diode from being damaged. The zener diode, 1N4738A, operates with its reverse voltage of 7.79-8.61V and it is connected in parallel to act as a voltage regulator and supply a constant output of 8V DC. The 300-ohm resistor connected in series with the LED is used to protect the LED, with 1.8V to 2.1V capacity, from any damage. The LED indicates that the power supply is working when it lights or not when it does not light. The 500-ohm resistor acts as the load of the circuit.
